Diffusion of particles in an expanding sphere with an absorbing boundary
We study the problem of particles undergoing Brownian motion in an expanding
sphere whose surface is an absorbing boundary for the particles. The problem is
akin to that of the diffusion of impurities in a grain of polycrystalline
material undergoing grain growth. We solve the time dependent diffusion
equation for particles in a d-dimensional expanding sphere to obtain the
particle density function (function of space and time). The survival rate or
the total number of particles per unit volume as a function of time is
evaluated. We have obtained particular solutions exactly for the case where d=3
and a parabolic growth of the sphere. Asymptotic solutions for the particle
density when the sphere growth rate is small relative to particle diffusivity

Intervention studies play an important role in supporting and complementing scientific validation of results of epidemiological non-intervention studies linking air pollution and health. In this paper a collection of existing published intervention studies is reviewed with the aim to give a summarized overview spanning a variety of approaches regarding the type of the intervention and findings with the main focus on studies that assessed interventions that improved air quality and the associated positive impact on public health. Nonlinear Interactions Between Gravitational Radiation and Modified Alfven Modes in Astrophysical Dusty Plasmas
We present an investigation of nonlinear interactions between Gravitational
Radiation and modified Alfv\'{e}n modes in astrophysical dusty plasmas.
Assuming that stationary charged dust grains form neutralizing background in an
electron-ion-dust plasma, we obtain the three wave coupling coefficients, and
calculate the growth rates for parametrically coupled gravitational radiation
and modified Alfv\'{e}n-Rao modes. The threshold value of the gravitational
wave amplitude associated with convective stabilization is particularly small
if the gravitational frequency is close to twice the modified Alfv\'en
wave-frequency. The implication of our results to astrophysical dusty plasmas

Mixed-data-model heterogeneous compilation and OpenMP offloading
Heterogeneous computers combine a general-purpose host processor with domain-specific programmable many-core accelerators, uniting high versatility with high performance and energy efficiency. While the host manages ever-more application memory, accelerators are designed to work mainly on their local memory. This difference in addressed memory leads to a discrepancy between the optimal address width of the host and the accelerator. Today 64-bit host processors are commonplace, but few accelerators exceed 32-bit addressable local memory, a difference expected to increase with 128-bit hosts in the exascale era. Managing this discrepancy requires support for multiple data models in heterogeneous compilers. So far, compiler support for multiple data models has not been explored, which hampers the programmability of such systems and inhibits their adoption. In this work, we perform the first exploration of the feasibility and performance of implementing a mixed-data-mode heterogeneous system. To support this, we present and evaluate the first mixed-data-model compiler, supporting arbitrary address widths on host and accelerator. To hide the inherent complexity and to enable high programmer productivity, we implement transparent offloading on top of OpenMP. The proposed compiler techniques are implemented in LLVM and evaluated on a 64+32-bit heterogeneous SoC. Results on benchmarks from the PolyBench-ACC suite show that memory can be transparently shared between host and accelerator at overheads below 0.7 % compared to 32-bit-only execution, enabling mixed-data-model computers to execute at near-native performance
Neurofilaments can differentiate ALS subgroups and ALS from common diagnostic mimics
Delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis are frequent in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(ALS), the most common form of motor neuron disease (MND). Neurofilament light chain (NFL) and
phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNFH) are elevated in ALS patients. We retrospectively
quantified cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) NFL, CSF pNFH and plasma NFL in stored samples that were
collected at the diagnostic work-up of ALS patients (n = 234), ALS mimics (n = 44) and controls (n = 9).
We assessed the diagnostic performance, prognostication value and relationship to the site of onset
and genotype. CSF NFL, CSF pNFH and plasma NFL levels were significantly increased in ALS patients
compared to patients with neuropathies & myelopathies, patients with myopathies and controls.
Furthermore, CSF pNFH and plasma NFL levels were significantly higher in ALS patients than in
patients with other MNDs. Bulbar onset ALS patients had significantly higher plasma NFL levels
than spinal onset ALS patients. ALS patients with C9orf72HRE mutations had significantly higher
plasma NFL levels than patients with SOD1 mutations. Survival was negatively correlated with all
three biomarkers. Receiver operating characteristics showed the highest area under the curve for CSF
pNFH for differentiating ALS from ALS mimics and for plasma NFL for estimating ALS short and long
survival. All three biomarkers have diagnostic value in differentiating ALS from clinically relevant ALS
mimics. Plasma NFL levels can be used to differentiate between clinical and genetic ALS subgroups
YopN and TyeA Hydrophobic Contacts Required for Regulating Ysc-Yop Type III Secretion Activity by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis
Yersinia bacteria target Yop effector toxins to the interior of host immune cells by the Ysc-Yop type III secretion system. A YopN-TyeA heterodimer is central to controlling Ysc-Yop targeting activity. A + 1 frameshift event in the 3-prime end of yopN can also produce a singular secreted YopN-TyeA polypeptide that retains some regulatory function even though the C-terminal coding sequence of this YopN differs greatly from wild type. Thus, this YopN C-terminal segment was analyzed for its role in type III secretion control. Bacteria producing YopN truncated after residue 278, or with altered sequence between residues 279 and 287, had lost type III secretion control and function. In contrast, YopN variants with manipulated sequence beyond residue 287 maintained full control and function. Scrutiny of the YopN-TyeA complex structure revealed that residue W 279 functioned as a likely hydrophobic contact site with TyeA. Indeed, a YopN W 279 G mutant lost all ability to bind TyeA. The TyeA residue F 8 was also critical for reciprocal YopN binding. Thus, we conclude that specific hydrophobic contacts between opposing YopN and TyeA termini establishes a complex needed for regulating Ysc-Yop activity
Crater degradation in the martian highlands: Morphometric analysis of the Sinus Sabaeus region and simulation modeling suggest fluvial processes.
[1] Results from simulation modeling of crater degradation by fluvial and eolian processes are compared with size-frequency and depth of infilling statistics for the heavily cratered Sinus Sabaeus quadrangle of Mars. The fractional degree of infilling of craters greater than 10 km in diameter in this region is bimodal, with a small population of post-Noachian craters with little infilling, whereas most Noachian craters are strongly infilled. This pattern is most consistent with fluvial erosion of craters, because modeling indicates that craters fill rapidly at first, but the rate of infilling diminishes through time as crater wall heights diminish and the area of deposition on the crater floor increases. Simulated rates of crater infilling by eolian processes are more constant, which would be expected to produce craters equally distributed in degree of infilling, which is not observed. The small slope of the size-frequency distribution in the 10-30 km size range is also consistent with the more rapid fluvial erosion of smaller craters. The analysis also suggests that rates of crater production and of crater degradation were in rough balance during the Noachian epoch in the 10-30 km size range
