Accumulation of electric-field-stabilized geminate polaron pairs in an organic semiconductor to attain high excitation density under low intensity pumping
The recombination dynamics of geminate polaron pair (PP) states are investigated by monitoring electric-field-induced delayed fluorescence in thin films consisting of the green laser dye, Coumarin-6 (C6) doped at 1 wt %1wt% into 4,4′4,4′-bis(NN-carbazolyl)biphenyl. We find that the PP decay follows τ−mτ−m (with m ∼ 0.1m∼0.1), where ττ is the time that the PPs are held in the field. This sublinear decay suggests the possibility for accumulation of PPs over time that can then be reconverted into excitons upon field removal. We demonstrate the generation of short ( ∼ 50 ns∼50ns full width at half maximum) bursts of C6 fluorescence with peak intensities >20>20 times the steady-state fluorescence intensity (corresponding to a C6 singlet exciton density NS>4×1015 cm3NS>4×1015cm3) when pumped continuously by a low intensity (<1 W/cm2(<1W∕cm2) laser in the presence of a pulsed electric field.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87790/2/193502_1.pd
Sustainability ranking of desalination plants using Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems
As water desalination continues to expand globally, desalination plants are continually under pressure to meet the requirements of sustainable development. However, the majority of desalination sustainability research has focused on new desalination projects, with limited research on sustainability performance of existing desalination plants. This is particularly important while considering countries with limited resources for freshwater such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it is heavily reliant on existing desalination infrastructure. In this regard, the current research deals with the sustainability analysis of desalination processes using a generic sustainability ranking framework based on Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems. The fuzzy-based models were validated using data from two typical desalination plants in the UAE. The promising results obtained from the fuzzy ranking framework suggest this more in-depth sustainability analysis should be beneficial due to its flexibility and adaptability in meeting the requirements of desalination sustainability
Space shuttle electromagnetic environment experiment. Phase A: Definition study
A program is discussed which develops a concept for measuring the electromagnetic environment on earth with equipment on board an orbiting space shuttle. Earlier work on spaceborne measuring experiments is reviewed, and emissions to be expected are estimated using, in part, previously gathered data. General relations among system parameters are presented, followed by a proposal on spatial and frequency scanning concepts. The methods proposed include a nadir looking measurement with small lateral scan and a circularly scanned measurement looking tangent to the earth's surface at the horizon. Antenna requirements are given, assuming frequency coverage from 400 MHz to 40 GHz. For the low frequency range, 400-1000 MHz, a processed, thinned array is proposed which will be more fully analyzed in the next phase of the program. Understanding the evolution of native pinewoods in Scotland will benefit their future management and conservation
Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a foundation species in Scottish highland forests and a national icon. Due to heavy exploitation, the current native pinewood coverage represents a small fraction of the postglacial maximum. To reverse this decline, various schemes have been initiated to promote planting of new and expansion of old pinewoods. This includes the designation of seed zones for control of the remaining genetic resources. The zoning was based mainly on biochemical similarity among pinewoods but, by definition, neutral molecular markers do not reflect local phenotypic adaptation. Environmental variation within Scotland is substantial and it is not yet clear to what extent this has shaped patterns of adaptive differentiation among Scottish populations. Systematic, rangewide common-environment trials can provide insights into the evolution of the native pinewoods, indicating how environment has influenced phenotypic variation and how variation is maintained. Careful design of such experiments can also provide data on the history and connectivity among populations, by molecular marker analysis. Together, phenotypic and molecular datasets from such trials can provide a robust basis for refining seed transfer guidelines for Scots pine in Scotland and should form the scientific basis for conservation action on this nationally important habitat
Site-selective adsorption of naphthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride on Ag(110): First-principles calculations
The mechanism of adsorption of the
1,4,5,8-naphthalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA) molecule on the Ag(110)
surface is elucidated on the basis of extensive density functional theory
calculations. This molecule, together with its perylene counterpart, PTCDA, are
archetype organic semiconductors investigated experimentally over the past 20
years. We find that the bonding of the molecule to the substrate is highly
site-selective, being determined by electron transfer to the LUMO of the
molecule and local electrostatic attraction between negatively charged carboxyl
oxygens and positively charged silver atoms in [1-10] atomic rows. The
adsorption energy in the most stable site is 0.9eV. A similar mechanism is

Bilingualism Is Associated with a Delayed Onset of Dementia but Not with a Lower Risk of Developing it: a Systematic Review with Meta-Analyses.
Some studies have linked bilingualism with a later onset of dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Not all studies have observed such relationships, however. Differences in study outcomes may be due to methodological limitations and the presence of confounding factors within studies such as immigration status and level of education. We conducted the first systematic review with meta-analysis combining cross-sectional studies to explore if bilingualism might delay symptom onset and diagnosis of dementia, AD, and MCI. Primary outcomes included the age of symptom onset, the age at diagnosis of MCI or dementia, and the risk of developing MCI or dementia. A secondary outcome included the degree of disease severity at dementia diagnosis. There was no difference in the age of MCI diagnosis between monolinguals and bilinguals [mean difference: 3.2; 95% confidence intervals (CI): -3.4, 9.7]. Bilinguals vs. monolinguals reported experiencing AD symptoms 4.7 years (95% CI: 3.3, 6.1) later. Bilinguals vs. monolinguals were diagnosed with dementia 3.3 years (95% CI: 1.7, 4.9) later. Here, 95% prediction intervals showed a large dispersion of effect sizes (-1.9 to 8.5). We investigated this dispersion with a subgroup meta-analysis comparing studies that had recruited participants with dementia to studies that had recruited participants with AD on the age of dementia and AD diagnosis between mono- and bilinguals. Results showed that bilinguals vs. monolinguals were 1.9 years (95% CI: -0.9, 4.7) and 4.2 (95% CI: 2.0, 6.4) older than monolinguals at the time of dementia and AD diagnosis, respectively. The mean difference between the two subgroups was not significant. There was no significant risk reduction (odds ratio: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.68-1.16) in developing dementia among bilinguals vs. monolinguals. Also, there was no significant difference (Hedges' g = 0.05; 95% CI: -0.13, 0.24) in disease severity at dementia diagnosis between bilinguals and monolinguals, despite bilinguals being significantly older. The majority of studies had adjusted for level of education suggesting that education might not have played a role in the observed delay in dementia among bilinguals vs. monolinguals. Although findings indicated that bilingualism was on average related to a delayed onset of dementia, the magnitude of this relationship varied across different settings. This variation may be due to unexplained heterogeneity and different sources of bias in the included studies. Registration: PROSPERO CRD42015019100
A two-species continuum model for aeolian sand ripples
We formulate a continuum model for aeolian sand ripples consisting of two
species of grains: a lower layer of relatively immobile clusters, with an upper
layer of highly mobile grains moving on top. We predict analytically the ripple
wavelength, initial ripple growth rate and threshold saltation flux for ripple
formation. Numerical simulations show the evolution of realistic ripple
profiles from initial surface roughness via ripple growth and merger.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Heat capacity study of BaFeAs: effects of annealing
Heat-capacity, X-ray diffraction, and resistivity measurements on a
high-quality BaFeAs sample show an evolution of the
magneto-structural transition with successive annealing periods. After a 30-day
anneal the resistivity in the (ab) plane decreases by more than an order of
magnitude, to 12 cm, with a residual resistance ratio 36; the
heat-capacity anomaly at the transition sharpens, to an overall width of less
than K, and shifts from 135.4 to 140.2 K. The heat-capacity anomaly in both the
as-grown sample and after the 30-day anneal shows a hysteresis of 0.15 K,
and is unchanged in a magnetic field H = 14 T. The X-ray and
heat-capacity data combined suggest that there is a first order jump in the
structural order parameter. The entropy of the transition is reported
