Van Swieten Student 2.0 - The way the Medical University of Vienna is representing their essential literature in time of Web 2.0 The University Library of the Medical University of Vienna created a new service for their students. Starting with the idea to make the textbook collection more attractive the library started a new project with the working title “Virtual Textbook Collection”. The final product is now a catalogue 2.0, which connects the whole students stuff (textbooks, e-books, lecture notes, etc.) and put it up for research on one place. This is the Van Swieten Student 2.0 http://ub.meduniwien.ac.at/wpopac/welcome The Van Swieten Student 2.0 is based on the blogging software WordPress extended by the Plug-in called Scriblio, which allows to integrate a catalogue into a WordPress blog. Until now, this concept has only been realised by English libraries. The Van Swieten Student 2.0 is the first time Scriblio is used in a German-Speaking library. This catalogue gives the opportunity to integrate different parts of catalogue enrichment like covers, table of contents, abstracts, similar items, etc. The open API’s and a whole range of Plug-ins and extensions for WordPress, make the catalogue extremely flexible for the needs of students. In addition to the Scriblio installation, the Van Swieten Student 2.0 offers, for example, different kinds of social bookmarking and a five stars-rating. The library also thinks to give the students the possibility to tag. Catalogue Enrichment isn’t synonymous to catalogue 2.0. The Van Swieten Student 2.0 is definitely a catalogue 2.0 because readers have the possibility to comment and to rate the literature and on the other hand the possibility to get involved by creating new content. The library is able to benefit from the Van Swieten student 2.0 in different ways. With Van Swieten Student 2.0 the library gains the possibility to experience easily with different functions of a catalogue 2.0. The library also wants to evaluate the experience of the students in working with Van Swieten student 2.0, to get to a criteria check list for a catalogue 2.0 for all library sources. Furthermore the library expects to get a higher usage of their e-books, because of linking them with the print version. 25% of all titles in the textbook collection are already available as e-books. The library tends to increase their number of e-books. Therefore it is very important to create an attractive and easy way of access. Van Swieten Student 2.0 is just another way to structure the change

Virtuelle Lehrbuchsammlung und eBooks on Demand als Facetten der Hybridbibliothek: zwei innovative Services der UniversitÀtsbibliothek der Medizinischen UniversitÀt Wien

The university library of the Medical University of Vienna is a hybrid library and offers a huge stock of literature in print and online. Two projects were realised to improve access to this collection. The library built a catalogue for their students, which includes all relevant resources for their courses. In addition to textbooks, print and online, it includes further relevant resources. The catalogue, called Van Swieten Student 2.0, uses a lot of web 2.0 applications. Until now one had to search a card index to find rare books of historical medical interest. That changed because the card index got digitalised and machine readable. So the library could put the card index into a catalogue with web 2.0 applications to make browsing easier. Because of a ground-breaking service, called eBooks on Demand (eod), it is now possible to directly order books which are no longer under copyright out of this catalogue

Many university libraries and in particular medical libraries have built up a considerable collection of electronic books. These E-Books are already highly accepted by patrons despite unsolved questions on technical standards and license models which have to be tackled by publishers and libraries. A short introduction on advantages and disadvantages of E-Books is followed by a presentation of E-Book collections and E-Book catalogues found on the websites of medical libraries in Berlin, Mainz, MĂŒnster and ZĂŒrich. A more detailed report is given on the E-Book situation at the library of the Medical University Vienna including problems with usage data. Results of a recent library online survey are discussed in regard to E-Books. So far the experience with E-Books at the library of the Medical University Vienna and the positive feedback by patrons suggests that E-Books came to stay in medical libraries
