The thin win : implicit preference for slim models in advertising

Much of human behaviour is influenced by non-conscious, uncontrolled, unobserved processes in memory (i.e. implicit processes). Implicit methods have some attractiveness for practitioners, but they are not widely used in commercial marketing research. This research therefore, intends to expand knowledge on consumer research using methods studying implicit processes. The popular debate over slim models in advertising serves as a real world situation for the Implicit Association Test (IAT). A picture / word format was used for this IAT study. Pairs of attractive / less attractive key visuals for advertising (4 brands) were produced using commercially available software. The two pictures included a women, a product logo and some background. We only manipulated the size of the women (slim and well-rounded). The study with 60 participants confirms the "what is beautiful is good"-stereotype on the implicit level. Both, males and females clearly favoured slim models over well-rounded models. Also, the study finds no correlation between explicit, stated preferences and the implicit preference. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the usefulness of the IAT for studying consumer behaviour. Its application in management practice is strongly encouraged

Warmth and competence dimensions of brands as a result of implicit perceptions

    No full text
Purpose: The Stereotype Content Model postulates that consumers perceive other individuals primarily in terms of their warmth and competence. This also applies to brands. Consumers admire brands that are in the ‘golden quadrant’ (highly competent and very warm). Since previous studies were based on explicit measures, we intended to replicate the results for brands on the implicit, unconscious level. Method: As a measure of implicit associations we used the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and studied 8 brands with 78 study participants. Results: The results of this study fully confirm the findings from previous studies, both on the implicit as well as on the explicit level. The presence of an IAT-effect suggests that participants associated competent brands with “positive” and less competent brands with “negative”. The same holds true for the warmth dimension. It is noteworthy that the implicit (unconscious) effect was much stronger than the explicit effect. Conclusions: The results confirm the presence of an IAT-effect. The participants in our study associated competent/warm brands with “positive” and less competent/cold brands with “negative”. The results also suggest that the IAT is a better measure for testing the “golden quadrant” concept

Taxonomic and Strain-Specific Identification of the Probiotic Strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus 35 within the Lactobacillus casei Group▿

Lactobacilli are lactic acid bacteria that are widespread in the environment, including the human diet and gastrointestinal tract. Some Lactobacillus strains are regarded as probiotics because they exhibit beneficial health effects on their host. In this study, the long-used probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus 35 was characterized at a molecular level and compared with seven reference strains from the Lactobacillus casei group. Analysis of rrn operon sequences confirmed that L. rhamnosus 35 indeed belongs to the L. rhamnosus species, and both temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis and ribotyping showed that it is closer to the probiotic strain L. rhamnosus ATCC 53103 (also known as L. rhamnosus GG) than to the species type strain. In addition, L. casei ATCC 334 gathered in a coherent cluster with L. paracasei type strains, unlike L. casei ATCC 393, which was closer to L. zeae; this is evidence of the lack of relatedness between the two L. casei strains. Further characterization of the eight strains by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis repetitive DNA element-based PCR identified distinct patterns for each strain, whereas two isolates of L. rhamnosus 35 sampled 40 years apart could not be distinguished. By subtractive hybridization using the L. rhamnosus GG genome as a driver, we were able to isolate five L. rhamnosus 35-specific sequences, including two phage-related ones. The primer pairs designed to amplify these five regions allowed us to develop rapid and highly specific PCR-based identification methods for the probiotic strain L. rhamnosus 35

Maternal influences on vocal development in a precocial bird, the Japanese Quail (Coturnix c. japonica)

    No full text
International audienceIn many mammals and birds, the mother play a major role in the development of their young through pre- and postnatal influences. As early as prenatally, the embryo is exposed to olfactory, visual and auditory stimulations that are likely to affect the behavioural expression of the young during postnatal life. In particular, several studies have shown the effects of auditory stimulation in ovo on perceptual responses or hearing preferences for maternal vocalizations after hatching. The mother can also influence the behavioural phenotype of her young at the postnatal stage through her presence and behaviour. In this study, we explored both prenatal and postnatal maternal influences on the vocal development of a precocial bird, the Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica). To do this, fertilized eggs were incubated in the laboratory, and they were stimulated (s) or not (ns) by maternal vocalizations during the last days of incubation. After hatching, the stimulated group and the control groups were paired, and were raised with (M) or without an adoptive mother (NM). The vocal development of chicks from four experimental groups were thus compared: Ms, Mns, NMs and NMns. Vocalizations were recorded in situation of social isolation (separation from the familiar chick (all groups) and from the mother (Ms and Mns), during the mothering period and until the age of two months. The first results indicate pre- and postnatal maternal influences on vocalizations’ structure. This confirms that vocal plasticity exists in the Japanese quail, a species that is traditionally considered as a non-vocal learner

Self-calibrating smooth pursuit through active efficient coding

International audienceThis paper presents a model for the autonomous learning of smooth pursuit eye movements based on an efficient coding criterion for active perception. This model accounts for the joint development of visual encoding and eye control. Sparse coding models encode the incoming data at two different spatial resolu-tions and capture the statistics of the input in spatio-temporal basis functions. A reinforcement learner controls eye velocity so as to maximize a reward signal based on the efficiency of the encoding. We consider the embodiment of the approach in the iCub simulator and real robot.Motion perception and smooth pursuit control are not explicitly expressed as tasks for the robot to achieve but emerge as the result of the system's active attempt to efficiently encode its sensory inputs. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is self-calibrating and robust to strong perturbations of the perception-action link
