    A novel estrus-synchronization program for anestrous and cycling, suckled, beef cows

    We used four herds at three Kansas ranches to evaluate the potential of two new estrus synchronization strategies to increase estrus expression and fertility of 911 crossbred suckled beef cows. The treatments included: 1) 100 μg of GnRH and a 6-mg norgestomet ear implant on day -7 and 25 mg of PG F2" and implant removal on day 0 (GnRH+NORG+PG F2"); 2) 100 μg of GnRH on day - 7 and 25 mg of PGF 2" on day 0 (GnRH+PG F2"); and 3 ) (control) 25- mg injections of PG F2" on days -14 and 0; (2×PGF2" control) . The GnRH+NORG+ PGF 2" and GnRH+PGF treatments increased (P<.01) 2" the overall percentages of cows detected in estrus by 49% and 27% and pregnancy rates by 46% and 37%, respectively, over the control group, without altering conception rate. Both treatments increase d the estrus, conception, and pregnancy rates of noncycling cows, compared to controls

    Classical Cepheids: Yet another version of the Baade-Becker-Wesselink method

    We propose a new version of the Baade--Becker--Wesselink technique, which allows one to independently determine the colour excess and the intrinsic colour of a radially pulsating star, in addition to its radius, luminosity, and distance. It is considered to be a generalization of the Balona approach. The method also allows the function F(CI) = BC + 10 log (Teff) for the class of pulsating stars considered to be calibrated. We apply this technique to a number of classical Cepheids with very accurate light and radial-velocity curves and with bona fide membership in open clusters (SZ Tau, CF Cas, U Sgr, DL Cas, GY Sge), and find the results to agree well with the reddening estimates of the host open clusters.     NoBiosimilar pharmaceuticals are complex biological molecules that have similar physicochemical properties to the originator therapeutic protein. They are produced by complex multi-stage processes and are not truly equivalent. Therefore, for a biosimilar to be approved for market it is important to demonstrate that the biological product is highly similar to a reference product. This includes its primary and higher order structures and its aggregation behaviour. Representative lots of both the proposed biosimilar and the reference product are analysed to understand the lot-to-lot variability of both drug substances in the manufacturing processes. Whilst it is not easy to characterise every variation of a protein structure at present additional analytical technologies need to be utilised to ensure the safety and efficacy of any potential biosimilar product. We have explored the use of Taylor dispersion analysis (TDA) to analyse such batch to batch variations in the model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and compared the results to that obtained by conventional dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS). Inter and intra batch differences were evident in all grades of BSA analysed. However, the reproducibility of the TDA measurements, enabled the stability and reversibility of BSA aggregates to be more readily monitored. This demonstrates that Taylor dispersion analysis is a very sensitive technique to study higher order protein states and aggregation. The results, here, also indicate a correlation between protein purity and the physical behaviour of the samples after heat shocking. Here, the protein with the highest quoted purity resulted in a reduced increase in the measured hydrodynamic radius after heat stressing, indicating that less unfolding/aggregation had occurred. Whilst DLS was also able to observe the presence of aggregates, its bias towards larger aggregates indicated a much larger increase in hydrodynamic radii and is less sensitive to small changes in hydrodynamic radii. TDA was also able to identify low levels of larger aggregates that were not observed by DLS. Therefore, given the potential for immunogenicity effects that may result from such aggregates it is suggested that TDA may be suitable in the evaluating detailed batch to batch variability and process induced physical changes of biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars

    We read with interest the report on melioidosis in camels by Bergin and Torenbeeck (1991). In January 1990, we isolated Pseudomonas pseudomallei from a camel at Mingela, northern Queensland, which had severe, purulent bronchopneumonia. This camel differed in its clinical presentation from the animal described by Bergin and Torenbeeck (1991) from which P pseudomallei was isolated by the Rockhampton Veterinary Laboratory. The attending veterinarian found the 8-year-old bull camel to be pyrexic, distressed, dehydrated and disinterested in its environment. Ataxia, particularly of the hind limbs, was evident when attempts were made to move it

    Child Involvement in Meal Preparation and Grocery Shopping is Associated with Lower Levels of Food Fussiness Among Young Children

    This study examined associations between child food involvement and food fussiness. Analyses used survey data from 62 children ages 1.5 to 5.9 years who participated in the Guelph Family Health Study Pilot. Overall involvement (β = -0.51, p = 0.02), involvement in meal preparation (β = -0.42, p = 0.009), and involvement in grocery shopping (β = -0.29, p = 0.04) were inversely associated with food fussiness. Experimental research including larger, more diverse samples is needed to test whether food involvement reduces food fussiness among young children.     Metacognition and learning in spoken dialogue computer tutoring

    We investigate whether four metacognitive metrics derived from student correctness and uncertainty values are predictive of student learning in a fully automated spoken dialogue computer tutoring corpus. We previously showed that these metrics predicted learning in a comparable wizarded corpus, where a human wizard performed the speech recognition and correctness and uncertainty annotation. Our results show that three of the four metacognitive metrics remain predictive of learning even in the presence of noise due to automatic speech recognition and automatic correctness and uncertainty annotation. We conclude that our results can be used to inform a future enhancement of our fully automated system to track and remediate student metacognition and thereby further improve learning. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010
