    In a general semimartingale financial model, we study the stability of the No Arbitrage of the First Kind (NA1) (or, equivalently, No Unbounded Profit with Bounded Risk) condition under initial and under progressive filtration enlargements. In both cases, we provide a simple and general condition which is sufficient to ensure this stability for any fixed semimartingale model.     Active learning toward food-waste prevention: an educational program for college students

    openAccording to the World Bank and FAO, almost 30% of the total amount of food produced is lost or wasted along the food supply chain (FSC), meaning that around 1.3 billion tonnes of food per year do not reach the final consumers. These data denote the need for immediate and resolute interventions. Food waste implies numerous consequences, such as diffused hunger, unfair food distribution, or elevated GHG emissions, affecting our society in every aspect of sustainability. Despite being a worldwide issue, data are often ambiguous, due to their complexity and a diffused lack of knowledge. Developed countries (i.e. North America and Europe) generally observe a higher amount of food waste, which notably occurs at a micro level within households. Studies have tried to understand the causes of such approaches toward food, and despite the lack of shared definitions, the reasons lay usually in wrong habits, lack of awareness, lack of culinary skills, etc. Consequently, reasonable solutions are interventions to spur behavioral change and a higher level of awareness toward this issue. This work will focus, therefore, on the design of a project proposal to support university students in reducing and preventing their food waste practices

    ARID1A in cancer: Friend or foe?

    ARID1A belongs to a class of chromatin regulatory proteins that function by maintaining accessibility at most promoters and enhancers, thereby regulating gene expression. The high frequency of ARID1A alterations in human cancers has highlighted its significance in tumorigenesis. The precise role of ARID1A in cancer is highly variable since ARID1A alterations can have a tumor suppressive or oncogenic role, depending on the tumor type and context. ARID1A is mutated in about 10% of all tumor types including endometrial, bladder, gastric, liver, biliopancreatic cancer, some ovarian cancer subtypes, and the extremely aggressive cancers of unknown primary. Its loss is generally associated with disease progression more often than onset. In some cancers, ARID1A loss is associated with worse prognostic features, thus supporting a major tumor suppressive role. However, some exceptions have been reported. Thus, the association of ARID1A genetic alterations with patient prognosis is controversial. However, ARID1A loss of function is considered conducive for the use of inhibitory drugs which are based on synthetic lethality mechanisms. In this review we summarize the current knowledge on the role of ARID1A as tumor suppressor or oncogene in different tumor types and discuss the strategies for treating ARID1A mutated cancers

    The predictive value of fruit juice in the esophagus-pleural fistula.

    Esophageal-pleural fistula is a rare and challenging condition to diagnose and requires strong clinical suspicion in order to be recognized promptly. Chest computed tomography (CT) with contrast medium for explain abbreviation (OS) is the gold standard for diagnosis. The definitive therapy is purely surgical, except for a few selected cases that benefit from endoscopic therapy. Our case involves a 45-year-old woman who came to the Emergency Department with dyspnea and thoracalgia. Chest X-ray and high-resolution CT showed empyema and pleural effusion to the left hemithorax. The lack of improvement despite the therapy and a subsequent clinical finding gave rise to the suspicion of esophageal-pleural fistula, confirmed with CT with contrast medium for OS. In this case, we opted for endoscopy correction of the esophageal defects. The diagnostic delay and the pre-existing comorbidities (previous kidney transplant for chronic kidney disease from lupus nephritis, high blood pressure, familiarity with Ischemic cardiomyopathy) could justify the inauspicious course of our case

    Use of Gyro On Offshore Wind Turbine Platform to Enhance Energy Harvesting

    Hybrid platforms are a promising architecture in innovative energy scenario for the minimization of the cost of offshore marine renewable installations and for reducing the variability of the power output. This article models and discusses the installation of a 5 MW wind turbine on a floating platform designed by Fincantieri and equipped with gyroscopic stabilization. Gyros will provide platform stabilization by damping the wave and wind induced motion on the floater and at the same time producing extra power. A reference site on the Shetland Island with particular harsh weather is chosen. Results show how the gyro can produce a considerable amount of power in moderate and medium climate conditions

    Restriction of dietary protein decreases mTORC1 in tumors and somatic tissues of a tumor-bearing mouse xenograft model

    Reduced dietary protein intake and intermittent fasting (IF) are both linked to healthy longevity in rodents, and are effective in inhibiting cancer growth. The molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of chronic protein restriction (PR) and IF are unclear, but may be mediated in part by a down-regulation of the IGF/mTOR pathway. In this study we compared the effects of PR and IF on tumor growth in a xenograft mouse model of breast cancer. We also investigated the effects of PR and IF on the mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, inhibition of which extends lifespan in model organisms including mice. The mTOR protein kinase is found in two distinct complexes, of which mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) is responsive to acute treatment with amino acids in cell culture and in vivo. We found that both PR and IF inhibit tumor growth and mTORC1 phosphorylation in tumor xenografts. In somatic tissues, we found that PR, but not IF, selectively inhibits the activity of the amino acid sensitive mTORC1, while the activity of the second mTOR complex, mTORC2, was relatively unaffected by PR. In contrast, IF resulted in increased S6 phosphorylation in multiple metabolic tissues. Our work represents the first finding that PR may reduce mTORC1 activity in tumors and multiple somatic tissues, and suggest that PR may represent a highly translatable option for the treatment not only of cancer, but also other age-related diseases

    Dietary protein restriction reduces circulating VLDL triglyceride levels via CREBH-APOA5-dependent and -independent mechanisms

    Hypertriglyceridemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Dietary interventions based on protein restriction (PR) reduce circulating triglycerides (TGs), but underlying mechanisms and clinical relevance remain unclear. Here, we show that 1 week of a protein-free diet without enforced calorie restriction significantly lowered circulating TGs in both lean and diet-induced obese mice. Mechanistically, the TG-lowering effect of PR was due, in part, to changes in very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) metabolism both in liver and peripheral tissues. In the periphery, PR stimulated VLDL-TG consumption by increasing VLDL-bound APOA5 expression and promoting VLDL-TG hydrolysis and clearance from circulation. The PR-mediated increase in Apoa5 expression was controlled by the transcription factor CREBH, which coordinately regulated hepatic expression of fatty acid oxidation-related genes, including Fgf21 and Ppara. The CREBH-APOA5 axis activation upon PR was intact in mice lacking the GCN2-dependent amino acid-sensing arm of the integrated stress response. However, constitutive hepatic activation of the amino acid-responsive kinase mTORC1 compromised CREBH activation, leading to blunted APOA5 expression and PR-recalcitrant hypertriglyceridemia. PR also contributed to hypotriglyceridemia by reducing the rate of VLDL-TG secretion, independently of activation of the CREBH-APOA5 axis. Finally, a randomized controlled clinical trial revealed that 4-6 weeks of reduced protein intake (7%-9% of calories) decreased VLDL particle number, increased VLDL-bound APOA5 expression, and lowered plasma TGs, consistent with mechanistic conservation of PR-mediated hypotriglyceridemia in humans with translational potential as a nutraceutical intervention for dyslipidemia
