Coping Strategies and Social Support in a Mobile Phone Chat App Designed to Support Smoking Cessation : Qualitative Analysis
Smoking is one of the most significant factors contributing to low life expectancy, health inequalities, and illness at the worldwide scale. Smoking cessation attempts benefit from social support. Mobile phones have changed the way we communicate through the use of freely available message-oriented apps. Mobile app-based interventions for smoking cessation programs can provide interactive, supportive, and individually tailored interventions. This study aimed to identify emotions, coping strategies, beliefs, values, and cognitive evaluations of smokers who are in the process of quitting, and to analyze online social support provided through the analysis of messages posted to a chat function integrated into a mobile app. In this descriptive qualitative study, informants were smokers who participated in the chat of Tobbstop. The technique to generate information was documentary through messages collected from September 2014 through June 2016, specifically designed to support a smoking cessation intervention. A thematic content analysis of the messages applied 2 conceptual models: the Lazarus and Folkman model to assess participant's experiences and perceptions and the Cutrona model to evaluate online social support. During the study period, 11,788 text messages were posted to the chat by 101 users. The most frequent messages offered information and emotional support, and all the basic emotions were reported in the chat. The 3 most frequent coping strategies identified were physical activity, different types of treatment such as nicotine replacement, and humor. Beliefs about quitting smoking included the inevitability of weight gain and the notion that not using any type of medications is better for smoking cessation. Health and family were the values more frequently described, followed by freedom. A smoke-free environment was perceived as important to successful smoking cessation. The social support group that was developed with the app offered mainly emotional and informational support. Our analysis suggests that a chat integrated into a mobile app focused on supporting smoking cessation provides a useful tool for smokers who are in the process of quitting, by offering social support and a space to share concerns, information, or strategies
Sea surface emissivity observations at L-band: first results of the Wind and Salinity Experiment WISE 2000
Sea surface salinity can be measured by passive microwave remote sensing at L-band. In May 1999, the European Space Agency (ESA) selected the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission to provide global coverage of soil moisture and ocean salinity. To determine the effect of wind on the sea surface emissivity, ESA sponsored the Wind and Salinity Experiment (WISE 2000). This paper describes the field campaign, the measurements acquired with emphasis in the radiometric measurements at L-band, their comparison with numerical models, and the implications for the remote sensing of sea salinity.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Volum IIa. 1. Ambients litorals i salins.
The Liguro-Provençal-Catalan current (NW Mediterranean) observed by Doppler profiling in the Balearic Sea
For the first time a vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler has allowed a general current survey on the continental slope off northeast Spain in spring 1989. The path of the Liguro-Proven~al-Catalanc urrent has been followed from 41º 40' to 38º 45' N. The structure of the current appears to be, in the northern part, an alongslope frontal jet 35 km wide and 250 m deep, with maximum velocities of 30 c d s and a total flux of 1 Sv. In the southern part, the Gulf of Valencia, the current weakens and is partially detached from the slope and entrained in an anticyclonic gyre. Most of the flow feeds the return Balearic current and only a small part, 0.24 Sv, leaves the basin through the Eivissa sill
Sea surface mesoscale structures imaged by the synthetic aperture radar
The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an active sensor working in the frequency range of the microwaves. Its distinctive characteristic is the synthesis of a large antenna through the study of the phase of the received pulses over an integration time. The possibility of producing high resolution images regardless or the weather conditions makes SAR a very suitable sensor for the remote sensing of the ocean surface. In this paper we present the main characteristics of SAR, several techniques 01 image processing, and its applications to the study of sea surface structures, especially those related to mesoscale currents. We describe one of the first SAR images acquired by the European ERS-I satellite in 1991 in the western Mediterranean
SMOS L3 salinity performances at decreasing sea surface temperature
A study of the latitudinal trend of the retrieved salinity
performances along a Southwards transect has been performed,
analyzing the trade-off between geophysical effects in cold
seawater and the concomitant temporal oversampling under
various processing configurations. Quantitative sensitivity with
respect to sea surface temperature gradient has been evaluated.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Mapa de Vegetació de Catalunya 1:50.000 (MVC50). Fulls 258 (Figueres) – 259 (Roses)
