»Criminal Sanctions for Extremist Speech. A Comparison of German and US Approaches to Combating Neo-Nazi Hate Speech«In a recent ruling, the German Constitutional Court upheld a controversial statute criminalizing the endorsement, glorification and justification of the National Socialist regime. Based on the decision, Fohrbeck compares free speech limitations in Germany to those in the US, taking into account the different historical, sociological and constitutional backgrounds, and attempts to balance the interests of a ›militant democracy‹ against its citizens' fundamental rights.Das Grundrecht der Meinungsfreiheit (Art. 5 Abs. 1 S. 1 GG) ist nur unter strengen Anforderungen einschränkbar. Gleichwohl findet es seine Grenzen dort, wo Strafgesetze Äußerungen sanktionieren. Mit der Bestätigung der Verfassungskonformität des § 130 Abs. 4 StGB rührt der Wunsiedel-Beschluss des Bundesverfassungsgerichts an die Grundfesten der Dogmatik des Rederechts. Diese Entscheidung nimmt Fohrbeck zum Anlass, um im Spannungsfeld von Grundrechtsschutz und wehrhafter Demokratie straf- und verfassungsrechtliche Instrumente im Kampf gegen extremistische Meinungsäußerungen auf ihre Rechtmäßigkeit und verfassungspolitische Sinnhaftigkeit zu untersuchen. Dabei vergleicht er die gesellschaftliche und rechtliche Situation mit der in den USA und diskutiert Vorschläge zur Freiheit wahrenden und Demokratie sichernden Auflösung des in Zeiten von NSU-Prozess und zweitem NPD-Verbotsverfahren hochaktuellen Konfliktes

Young people’s employability skills: the impact of STEMNET’s programmes

In August 2015, the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) was commissioned by STEMNET (the Science, Engineering, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) to investigate the impact of the STEM Ambassador and STEM Clubs programmes on young peoples’ employability skills. STEM Ambassadors are individuals who use STEM skills in their work, and volunteer to support the provision of STEM education to young people. STEM Ambassadors register with STEMNET and receive an induction from a local Contract Holder. They are required to engage in at least one activity annually. STEM Ambassadors are drawn from a wide range of disciplines and career stages, including apprentices. STEM Clubs are extra-curricular sessions that allow pupils to explore elements of STEM subjects in alternative formats outside the curriculum. STEM Clubs take place in secondary schools, mostly for Key Stage 3 students, with some provision for Key Stage 4 or primary students. They may focus on one particular STEM discipline or be cross-cutting. Activities can include practical experiments, investigations, group work, competitions and discussions.
