    Cytological features of uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors in liquid-based cervical cytology: a potential pitfall. Report of a unique and rare case.

    Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex-cord tumors (UTROSCTs) are rare uterine neoplasms of uncertain etiology that resemble the sex cord tumors of the ovary and display a combined sex cord, epithelial, and smooth muscle immunophenotype. Most tumors are associated with a benign clinical course. We report the first cytological description of uterine UTROSCTs in liquid-based cervical cytology (LBC). A menopausal woman was discovered to have a uterine intraluminal polypoid mass protruding through the vagina. A Pap test was performed, and the LBC preparation showed isolated tumor cells with scant cytoplasm and slightly irregular, ovoid nuclei with fine chromatin and small nucleoli. Final histological evaluation identified a UTROSCT. This diagnostic possibility, albeit rare, should be included in the differential diagnosis when isolated malignant-appearing adenocarcinomatous cells are seen in women in the above scenario. As these features are not specific, they may result in misinterpretation with tumors that are more common and aggressive

Climate, 4(2), 14. doi:10.3390/cli4020031This study aims to calibrate and validate the generic crop model (CROPGRO-Soybean) and estimate the soybean yield, considering simulations with different sowing times for the current period (1990-2013) and future climate scenario (2014-2030). The database used came from observed data, nine climate models of CORDEX (Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment)-Africa framework and MERRA (Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications) reanalysis. The calibration and validation data for the model were acquired in field experiments, carried out in the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 growing seasons in the experimental area of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Angonia, Mozambique. The yield of two soybean cultivars: Tgx 1740-2F and Tgx 1908-8F was evaluated in the experiments and modeled for two distinct CO2 concentrations. Our model simulation results indicate that the fertilization effect leads to yield gains for both cultivars, ranging from 11.4% (Tgx 1908-8F) to 15% (Tgx 1740-2Fm) when compared to the performance of those cultivars under current CO2 atmospheric concentration. Moreover, our results show that MERRA, the RegCM4 (Regional Climatic Model version 4) and CNRM-CM5 (Centre National de Recherches Meteorologiques - Climatic Model version 5) models provided more accurate estimates of yield, while others models underestimate yield as compared to observations, a fact that was demonstrated to be related to the model's capability of reproducing the precipitation and the surface radiation amount

    Adaptation of the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) in Spanish

    The impact of social networks on people's daily lives is worrisome, particularly in adolescents and young people, who seem to exceed the limits of normal use. Constant excessive use can lead to pathological behaviors linked to social media addiction (SMA). Our objectives were to 1) adapt the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to Spanish and 2) evaluate its psychometric properties in a young population. The BSMAS was adapted to Spanish, involving experts on social media addiction and people from the target population during the adaptation process. For the psychometric evaluation, 650 Peruvian college students responded to the Spanish version (53.5 % women aged 18 to 40, M = 21.5 SD = 2.7). The one-dimensional measurement model proposed for the original BSMAS was confirmed for our version (X2(9) = 23.9315, CFI = 0.994, TLI = 0.990, SRMR = 0.032, RMSEA = 0.061). The reliability was good (α = 0.863; 95 % CI: 0.848–0.870; ω = 0.864; 95 % CI: 0.846–0.844), and the measurement invariance was confirmed for sex and age by fitting models. The concurrent validity with external social media addiction and mental health indicators was also confirmed. This study provides new and relevant information on the BSMAS validity and allows its application to Spanish-speaker college students from Peru and similar countries

    Discriminación entre poblaciones de abejas (apis mellifera L.) del sur de España, centro de Portugal y Madeira

    Tradicionalmente se ha considerado que las abejas que viven en la Península Ibérica pertenecen a la raza Apis mellifera iberica, que se encuentra emparentada con la raza A. m. intermissa que coloniza el norte de África y la raza A. m. mellifera originaria de Europa occidental. Las abejas obreras procedentes de España y Portugal, se han descrito como animales de color azabache, con pilosidad y tomento de tamaño mediano, y una probóscide bastante larga; encontrando algunos autores que los animales del sur tenían una pilosidad más corta y una probóscide más larga, que sus familiares procedentes del norte. En el presente trabajo hemos estudiado 34 muestras de abejas obreras procedentes de dos zonas de nuestra península (el sur de España y el centro de Portugal), y del Archipiélago de Madeira, para rastrear la existencia de posibles diferencias morfológicas. Los resultados muestran que los animales constituyen tres grupos morfológicos, identificables mediante un análisis canónico. Uno de ellos incluye a los procedentes del centro de Portugal, otro está formado por los oriundos de Córdoba, y el tercero está constituido por los procedentes de la isla de Madeira y de la Sierra de Cazorla

    Biometric study of apis mellifera population from central Portugal and Madeira

    Las abejas melíferas que habitan en la Península Ibérica han sido descritas tradicionalmente como pertenecientes a la raza Apis mellifera iberica. La raza iberica está constituida por animales de color oscuro y de un gran vigor, su comportamiento es algo nervioso y la enjambraz .n se considera como moderada. Desde un punto de vista morfológico, son pocos los trabajos en los que se han estudiado estos seres vivos, incluyendo la bibliografía existente descripciones más o menos extensas de los que habitan en la región mediterránea, Asturias y la Submeseta Norte. Si admitimos que diferentes condiciones climáticas han debido de tener efectos selectivos sobre las características de estos insectos, resulta muy interesante estudiar abejas procedentes de diferentes localizaciones, para conocer la variabilidad existente. En el presente trabajo hemos estudiado 16 caracteres morfológicos, en 18 muestras de abejas obreras oriundas del centro de Portugal y de la isla de Madeira. Los resultados indican que las abejas del centro de Portugal constituyen un grupo morfológico, en el que no se aprecian grandes diferencias entre las distintas localizaciones geográficas. Los animales procedentes de Madeira también forman un conjunto morfológico, en el que, cuando se estudia de forma conjunta con las muestras procedentes de Portugal, el análisis canónico muestra un solapamiento parcial de las poblaciones

    CRISPR/Cas12a-mediated gene editing in Geodia barretti sponge cell culture

    Sponges and their associated microorganisms are the most prolific source of marine natural products, and many attempts have been made at creating a marine sponge cell line to produce these products efficiently. However, limited knowledge on the nutrients sponge cells require to grow and poor genetic accessibility have hampered progress toward this goal. Recently, a new sponge-specific nutrient medium M1 has been shown to stimulate sponge cells in vitro to divide rapidly. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that sponge cells growing in M1 can be genetically modified using a CRISPR/Cas12a gene editing system. A short sequence of scrambled DNA was inserted using a single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotide donor template to disrupt the 2′,5′-oligoadenylate synthetase gene of cells from the boreal deep-sea sponge Geodia barretti. A blue fluorescent marker gene appeared to be inserted in an intron of the same gene and expressed by a small number of G. barretti cells. Our results represent an important step toward developing an optimized continuous sponge cell line to produce bioactive compounds.publishedVersio

    Effect of Recombinant Prophenin 2 on the Integrity and Viability of Trichomonas vaginalis

    Trichomonas vaginalis is the causal agent of trichomoniasis, which is associated with preterm child delivery, low birth weight, and an increased risk of infection by human papilloma virus and human immunodeficiency virus following exposure. Several reports have established increasing numbers of trichomoniasis cases resistant to metronidazole, the agent used for treatment, and it is therefore important to identify new therapeutic alternatives. Previously, our group reported the effect of tritrpticin, a synthetic peptide derived from porcine prophenin, on T. vaginalis; however, the hemolytic activity of this small peptide complicates its possible use as a therapeutic agent. In this study, we report that the propeptide and the processed peptide of prophenin 2 (cleaved with hydroxylamine) affected the integrity and growth of T. vaginalis and that pro-prophenin 2 displays some resistance to proteolysis by T. vaginalis proteinases at 1 h. Its effect on T. vaginalis as well as its low hemolytic activity and short-time stability to parasite proteinases makes prophenin 2 an interesting candidate for synergistic or alternative treatment against T. vaginalis

    Evolution of Phenolic Content, Antioxidant Capacity and Phenolic Profile during Cold Pre-fermentative Maceration and Subsequent Fermentation of Cabernet Sauvignon Red Wine

    The phenolic compound profile and content of red wines are modified during the maceration-fermentation process by several factors that alter the extractability of the compounds and by reactions that phenolic compounds undergo, and can be directly related to the quality of the final wine and its beneficial effects on the consumer. The aim of this study was to determine the change in phenolic content and profile during cold pre-fermentative maceration and fermentation without the removal of grape pomace. Total phenolics,flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins and antioxidant capacity were determined by spectrophotometric methods, and the phenolic profile was determined by HPLC-MS on each day of the maceration-fermentation process. The results showed a variation in the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity over time, but the final phenolic content showed no significative difference compared with the initial content (1 268 mg GAE/L and 1 115 mg GAE/L respectively). The phenolic profile showed that flavonoids were theprincipal compounds in wine and that they increased at the end of the winemaking. Condensed tannins also increased during fermentation, while anthocyanins and some phenolic acids decreased at the end of the process. The final content of phenolic compounds was similar to the initial one, but there was a change in the different fractions of phenolic compounds at the end of fermentation
