The impact of stellar feedback on the density and velocity structure of the interstellar medium
We study the impact of stellar feedback in shaping the density and velocity
structure of neutral hydrogen (HI) in disc galaxies. For our analysis, we carry
out pc resolution -body+adaptive mesh refinement (AMR)
hydrodynamic simulations of isolated galaxies, set up to mimic a Milky Way
(MW), and a Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC, SMC). We quantify the
density and velocity structure of the interstellar medium using power spectra
and compare the simulated galaxies to observed HI in local spiral galaxies from
THINGS (The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey). Our models with stellar feedback give an
excellent match to the observed THINGS HI density power spectra. We find that
kinetic energy power spectra in feedback regulated galaxies, regardless of
galaxy mass and size, show scalings in excellent agreement with super-sonic
turbulence () on scales below the thickness of the HI
layer. We show that feedback influences the gas density field, and drives gas
turbulence, up to large (kpc) scales. This is in stark contrast to density
fields generated by large scale gravity-only driven turbulence. We conclude
that the neutral gas content of galaxies carries signatures of stellar feedback
on all scales.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Monthly

Characterizing extremal digraphs for identifying codes and extremal cases of Bondy's theorem on induced subsets
An identifying code of a (di)graph is a dominating subset of the
vertices of such that all distinct vertices of have distinct
(in)neighbourhoods within . In this paper, we classify all finite digraphs
which only admit their whole vertex set in any identifying code. We also
classify all such infinite oriented graphs. Furthermore, by relating this
concept to a well known theorem of A. Bondy on set systems we classify the
extremal cases for this theorem
An improved lower bound for (1,<=2)-identifying codes in the king grid
We call a subset of vertices of a graph a -identifying
code if for all subsets of vertices with size at most , the sets
are distinct. The concept of
identifying codes was introduced in 1998 by Karpovsky, Chakrabarty and Levitin.
Identifying codes have been studied in various grids. In particular, it has
been shown that there exists a -identifying code in the king grid
with density 3/7 and that there are no such identifying codes with density
smaller than 5/12. Using a suitable frame and a discharging procedure, we
improve the lower bound by showing that any -identifying code of
the king grid has density at least 47/111
Moduli spaces of vector bundles over a Klein surface
A compact topological surface S, possibly non-orientable and with non-empty
boundary, always admits a Klein surface structure (an atlas whose transition
maps are dianalytic). Its complex cover is, by definition, a compact Riemann
surface M endowed with an anti-holomorphic involution which determines
topologically the original surface S. In this paper, we compare dianalytic
vector bundles over S and holomorphic vector bundles over M, devoting special
attention to the implications that this has for moduli varieties of semistable
vector bundles over M. We construct, starting from S, totally real, totally
geodesic, Lagrangian submanifolds of moduli varieties of semistable vector
bundles of fixed rank and degree over M. This relates the present work to the
constructions of Ho and Liu over non-orientable compact surfaces with empty
boundary (arXiv:math/0605587) .Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
No spin glass phase in ferromagnetic random-field random-temperature scalar Ginzburg-Landau model
Krzakala, Ricci-Tersenghi and Zdeborova have shown recently that the random
field Ising model with non-negative interactions and arbitrary external
magnetic field on an arbitrary lattice does not have a static spin glass phase.
In this paper we generalize the proof to a soft scalar spin version of the
Ising model: the Ginzburg-Landau model with random magnetic field and random
temperature-parameter. We do so by proving that the spin glass susceptibility
cannot diverge unless the ferromagnetic susceptibility does.Comment: 9 page

VINTERGATAN III: how to reset the metallicity of the Milky Way
Using the cosmological zoom simulation VINTERGATAN, we present a new scenario
for the onset of star formation at the metal-poor end of the low-[/Fe]
sequence in a Milky Way-like galaxy. In this scenario, the galaxy is fueled by
two distinct gas flows. One is enriched by outflows from massive galaxies, but
not the other. While the former feeds the inner galactic region, the latter
fuels an outer gas disk, inclined with respect to the main galactic plane, and
with a significantly poorer chemical content. The first passage of the last
major merger galaxy triggers tidal compression in the outer disk, which
increases the gas density and eventually leads to star formation, at a
metallicity 0.75 dex lower than the inner galaxy. This forms the first stars of
the low-[/Fe] sequence. These in situ stars have halo-like kinematics,
similarly to what is observed in the Milky Way, due to the inclination of the
outer disk which eventually aligns with the inner one via gravitational
torques. We show that this tilting disk scenario is likely to be common in
Milky-Way like galaxies. This process implies that the low-[/Fe]
sequence is populated in situ, simultaneously from two formation channels, in
the inner and the outer galaxy, with distinct metallicities. This contrasts
with purely sequential scenarios for the assembly of the Milky Way disk and
could be tested observationally.Comment: MNRAS in press. Movies available at
