Nei primi anni del Novecento Wyndham Lewis visita la Bretagna – terra incontaminata e primigenia, già meta di pellegrinaggio per gli artisti della generazione precedente – con quello che potremmo definire un atteggiamento da etnografo. La passione per il “primitivo” che anima la letteratura e la pittura in quel periodo è di certo uno dei motivi che spinge Lewis a registrare cerimonie, miti, riti e spettacoli locali, dando vita a pezzi blandamente narrativi, che si configurano piuttosto come resoconti di viaggio. Strategie del patetico e interludi circensi in Hide and Seek di Wilkie Collins

Starting from Victor Turner’s definitions of cultural performance and liminoid phenomena, the essay aims to analyse Wilkie Collins’s third novel, Hide and Seek (1854), which seems to be a sort of survey of the pastimes Victorian England allowed itself in the age of the increasing commodification of leisure. Though not a proper sensation novel (the genre for which Collins became famous in the 1860s), Hide and Seek draws on the conventions of melodrama, which, as Peter Brook convincingly argues, exerted a powerful influence on 19th century fiction. And, after the fashion of the melodrama, it deals with the disclosure of the secret origins of Mary Grice, a deaf and dumb little girl who performs in Jubber’s circus. However, although Hide and Seek is charged with sentimentality and patheticism, Collins appears to borrow from the circus and the music hall, in order to give his work the light touch of comedy. In fact, he scatters his novel with a number of “scenes in the circle”, which prove reflexive in Turner’s sense. Contained in the overarching pattern of the plot, they provide a diversion from the story’s main line, establishing an unusual kernel/satellite narrative dynamics, where the carnivalesque hinders and delays the unravelling of the mystery, defying the “bourgeois” narrative logic

Nel 1886 il chirurgo Frederick Treves sottrae John Merrick, affetto da una grave malattia che ne deforma il corpo, al circuito dei freak show dove si esibisce come uomo elefante, e lo interna presso il London Hospital, garantendogli una vita protetta e, allo stesso tempo, mettendolo a disposizione della scienza. The Elephant Man, pubblicato nel 1923 insieme ad altri ricordi della sua professione medica, è il resoconto di tale incontro e si configura come territorio privilegiato per indagare i rapporti tra medicina e letteratura, non solo perché la narrazione, ancorché incentrata su un caso clinico, si piega naturalmente al sentimentalismo e al sensazionalismo che caratterizzano certa produzione letteraria vittoriana, ma anche perché si presta a dimostrare come, all’epoca, il sapere scientifico non avesse completamente medicalizzato il corpo anomalo e si ponesse in relazione dinamica con idee e discorsi popolari, condividendone parzialmente visioni e linguaggi

Come fare la guerra con le parole: il caso del War Propaganda Bureau

At the outbreak of the First World War, Charles Masterman, head of the War Propaganda Bureau, invited a number of leading British writers to support the national cause with their works. The essay analyses some of the short stories commissioned by the War Propaganda Bureau, whose aim was to secure morale, regulating the affects of the population, seen as «a mass of affective beings», through ideals such as honour and glory. According to Attridge, a work of art is «one that brings the other into the field of the same». He maintains that it reveals that «dimension that has to remain out of sight if we are to pursue our normal paths through life», encouraging the reader to question the accepted values and norms of the culture to which he/she belongs. Part of his/her response to the work is thus a feeling of «strangeness». On the contrary, the literature of propaganda appears to accomplish a different task, namely, to make the extraordinary familiar. In order to reassure the reader, who is concerned about his/her survival and the future of the nation, it highlights the connection and continuity between the exceptional war and the ordinary pre-war state, drawing on the literary tradition and resorting to common moral codes and shared notions of national identity

Insight Into Campi Flegrei Caldera Unrest Through Seismic Tremor Measurements at Pisciarelli Fumarolic Field

Within a general volcanic unrest in the densely urbanized area of Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) an increase in the activity of Pisciarelli hydrothermal area is occurring. The seismic amplitude of Pisciarelli fumarolic tremor is a proxy for the fluid emission rate of the entire Solfatara‐Pisciarelli hydrothermal system. The long‐term analysis indicates a significant increase, by a factor of ~3 of the fumarolic tremor amplitude since May 2017. This increment matches with the trend of geochemical and seismic parameters observed in Campi Flegrei, therefore highlighting that Pisciarelli is a key site to monitor the volcanic unrest underway in this high‐risk caldera. The analysis of data from three closely spaced seismic stations provided new clues about the source mechanism of the tremor. Analyzing the fumarolic tremor amplitude we could also identify an episode of enlargement of the emission area close to the main fumarole of Pisciarelli. We propose a monitoring system based on the fumarolic tremor analysis, which provides real‐time information on the Pisciarelli hydrothermal activity and therefore on the current unrest in Campi Flegrei caldera.Published5544-55554V. We are writing this comment because many aspects of the analysis presented by Nappi et al. (2018) are debatable. In particular, a major issue is relevant to the conclusion suggested by Nappi et al. (2018) about a seismogenic normal fault with northward dip. This finding is not well‐founded because the authors do not really present a causative source model. In addition, their statement is clearly not consistent with the Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), Global Positioning System (GPS) and seismological measurements presented in the article previously published by De Novellis et al. La letteratura dal punto di vista degli scrittori

La storia della critica letteraria è stata generalmente esaminata dal punto di vista degli studiosi di teoria. Manca, a tutt’oggi, una visione d’insieme che esamini in maniera sistematica la critica letteraria dal punto di vista interno, ovvero degli autori stessi. Muovendo da tali premesse, il volume propone un’articolata analisi dei «discorsi» sulla letteratura prodotti da scrittori di lingua inglese, dalla seconda metà del Cinquecento a oggi. Allo scopo di dare ordine a una materia ampia e frastagliata, sono state individuate tre principali tipologie discorsive, o forme testuali, attraverso cui gli autori hanno dato voce alle proprie idee sulla letteratura. A tali tipologie discorsive corrispondono le tre sezioni in cui è stata suddivisa la materia critica del volume. La prima sezione, «Saggi e paratesti», esamina le teorie letterarie esposte in forma di saggi, prefazioni, commenti da parte dell’autore. La seconda sezione, «Disseminazioni», analizza le idee sulla letteratura sparse all’interno di romanzi, drammi, poesie. La terza sezione, infine, «Maschere d’autore», si concentra sulle teorie letterarie la cui esposizione è affidata a un alter ego dello scrittore, ovvero a una maschera parzialmente autobiografica. Ne emerge un quadro ricco e composito all’interno del quale teoria e prassi letteraria si arricchiscono reciprocamente, fino a fondersi in una più complessa unità i cui confini appaiono labili, indefiniti, negoziabili
