The spectral content of SDO/AIA 1600 and 1700 \AA\ filters from flare and plage observations
The strong enhancement of the ultraviolet emission during solar flares is
usually taken as an indication of plasma heating in the lower solar atmosphere
caused by the deposition of the energy released during these events. Images
taken with broadband ultraviolet filters by the {\em Transition Region and
Coronal Explorer} (TRACE) and {\em Atmospheric Imaging Assembly} (AIA 1600 and
1700~\AA) have revealed the morphology and evolution of flare ribbons in great
detail. However, the spectral content of these images is still largely unknown.
Without the knowledge of the spectral contribution to these UV filters, the use
of these rich imaging datasets is severely limited. Aiming to solve this issue,
we estimate the spectral contributions of the AIA UV flare and plage images
using high-resolution spectra in the range 1300 to 1900~\AA\ from the Skylab
NRL SO82B spectrograph. We find that the flare excess emission in AIA 1600~\AA\
is { dominated by} the \ion{C}{4} 1550~\AA\ doublet (26\%), \ion{Si}{1}
continua (20\%), with smaller contributions from many other chromospheric lines
such as \ion{C}{1} 1561 and 1656~\AA\ multiplets, \ion{He}{2} 1640~\AA,
\ion{Si}{2} 1526 and 1533~\AA. For the AIA 1700~\AA\ band, \ion{C}{1} 1656~\AA\
multiplet is the main contributor (38\%), followed by \ion{He}{2} 1640 (17\%),
and accompanied by a multitude of other, { weaker} chromospheric lines, with
minimal contribution from the continuum. Our results can be generalized to
state that the AIA UV flare excess emission is of chromospheric origin, while
plage emission is dominated by photospheric continuum emission in both

Exoplanet atmospheres with EChO: spectral retrievals using EChOSim
We demonstrate the effectiveness of the Exoplanet Characterisation
Observatory mission concept for constraining the atmospheric properties of hot
and warm gas giants and super Earths. Synthetic primary and secondary transit
spectra for a range of planets are passed through EChOSim (Waldmann & Pascale
2014) to obtain the expected level of noise for different observational
scenarios; these are then used as inputs for the NEMESIS atmospheric retrieval
code and the retrieved atmospheric properties (temperature structure,
composition and cloud properties) compared with the known input values,
following the method of Barstow et al. (2013a). To correctly retrieve the
temperature structure and composition of the atmosphere to within 2 {\sigma},
we find that we require: a single transit or eclipse of a hot Jupiter orbiting
a sun-like (G2) star at 35 pc to constrain the terminator and dayside
atmospheres; 20 transits or eclipses of a warm Jupiter orbiting a similar star;
10 transits/eclipses of a hot Neptune orbiting an M dwarf at 6 pc; and 30

Stable carbon isotope analysis of Cedrus atlantica pollen as an indicator of moisture availability
Stable carbon isotope analysis of pollen provides potential for reconstruction of past moisture availability in the environment on longer time-scales compared to isotope analysis of plant tissue. Here we show that the carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) of pollen, sporopollenin, leaf and stem tissues of Cedrus atlantica are strongly related. Untreated pollen δ13C has a significant linear relationship with sporopollenin δ13C (r2 = 0.97, p < 0.0001) which is relatively depleted in 13C by an average 1.5‰. Carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) by sporopollenin (derived from pollen δ13C values) is related to mean annual (r2 = 0.54, p < 0.001) and summer precipitation (r2 = 0.63, p < 0.0001). A 100 mm increase in mean annual precipitation results in sporopollenin Δ13C increasing by 0.52‰, or by 1.4‰ per 100 mm summer precipitation. There is a stronger relationship between sporopollenin Δ13C and long-term annual scPDSI (r2 = 0.86, p < 0.0001) and summer scPDSI (r2 = 0.86, p < 0.001) aridity indexes, with reduced Δ13C as aridity increases. These relationships suggest that stable carbon isotope analysis of C. atlantica fossil pollen could be used as a quantitative proxy for the reconstruction of summer moisture availability in Northwest Africa
Self-reported transvaginal ultrasound visualization of normal ovaries in postmenopausal women is not reliable: results of expert review of archived images in UKCTOCS.
OBJECTIVE: In UKCTOCS self-reported visualization rates(srVR) at annual TVS scan was a key quality control(QC) metric. Our objective was to independently assess srVR using expert review and develop software capable of monitoring it. METHODS: Images from 1,000 examinations randomly selected from 68,951 archived annual TVS exams undertaken between 2008-2011 where the ovaries were reported as 'seen and normal' were reviewed by a single expert. Software was developed to identify exact images used to measure ovaries by measuring caliper dimensions and matching them to that recorded by the sonographer. A logistic regression classifier to determine visualization was trained and validated using ovarian dimension and visualization data reported by the expert . RESULTS: The expert confirmed both ovaries were visualized (cVR-Both) in 50.2%(502/1000) of the exams. The software identified the measurement image in 534 exams which were split 2:1:1 providing training, validating and testing data. Classifier accuracy on validation data was 70.9%(CI-95% 70.0,71.8). Analysis of test data (133 exams) resulted in sensitivity of 90.5%(CI-95% 80.9,95.8) and specificity of 47.5%(CI-95% 34.5,60.8) in detecting expert confirmed cVR-Both. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that in a significant proportion of TVS annual screens the sonographers may have mistaken other structures for normal ovaries. It is uncertain whether or not this affected the sensitivity and stage at detection of ovarian cancer in the ultrasound arm of UKCTOCS, but we conclude QC metrics based on self-reported visualization of normal ovaries are unreliable. The classifier shows some potential for addressing this problem, though further research is needed

Solar interacting protons versus interplanetary protons in the core plus halo model of diffusive shock acceleration and stochastic re-acceleration
With the first observations of solar γ-rays from the decay of pions, the relationship of protons producing ground level enhancements (GLEs) on the Earth to those of similar energies producing the γ-rays on the Sun has been debated. These two populations may be either independent and simply coincident in large flares, or they may be, in fact, the same population stemming from a single accelerating agent and jointly distributed at the Sun and also in space. Assuming the latter, we model a scenario in which particles are accelerated near the Sun in a shock wave with a fraction transported back to the solar surface to radiate, while the remainder is detected at Earth in the form of a GLE. Interplanetary ions versus ions interacting at the Sun are studied for a spherical shock wave propagating in a radial magnetic field through a highly turbulent radial ray (the acceleration core) and surrounding weakly turbulent sector in which the accelerated particles can propagate toward or away from the Sun. The model presented here accounts for both the first-order Fermi acceleration at the shock front and the second-order, stochastic re-acceleration by the turbulence enhanced behind the shock. We find that the re-acceleration is important in generating the γ-radiation and we also find that up to 10% of the particle population can find its way to the Sun as compared to particles escaping to the interplanetary space
Renewed calls for abortion-related research in the post-Roe era
Nearly 50 years after Roe versus Wade, the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs versus Jackson Women’s Health Organization unraveled the constitutional right to abortion, allowing individual states to severely restrict or ban the procedure. In response, leading medical, public health, and community organizations have renewed calls for research to elucidate and address the burgeoning social and medical consequences of new abortion restrictions. Abortion research not only includes studies that establish the safety, quality, and efficacy of evidence-based abortion care protocols, but also encompasses studies on the availability of abortion care, the consequences of being denied an abortion, and the legal and social burdens surrounding abortion. The urgency of these calls for new evidence underscores the importance of ensuring that research in this area is conducted in an ethical and respectful manner, cognizant of the social, political, and structural conditions that shape reproductive health inequities and impact each stage of research—from protocol design to dissemination of findings. Research ethics relates to the moral principles undergirding the design and execution of research projects, and concerns itself with the technicalities of ethical questions related to the research process, such as informed consent, power relations, and confidentiality. Critical insights and reflections from reproductive justice, community engagement, and applied ethics frameworks have bolstered existing research ethics scholarship and discourse by underscoring the importance of meaningful engagement with community stakeholders—bringing attention to overlapping structures of oppression, including racism, sexism, and ways that these structures are perpetuated in the research process
A Study of Cosmic Ray Composition in the Knee Region using Multiple Muon Events in the Soudan 2 Detector
Deep underground muon events recorded by the Soudan 2 detector, located at a
depth of 2100 meters of water equivalent, have been used to infer the nuclear
composition of cosmic rays in the "knee" region of the cosmic ray energy
spectrum. The observed muon multiplicity distribution favors a composition
model with a substantial proton content in the energy region 800,000 -

Change in Blood Pressure Variability Among Treated Elderly Hypertensive Patients and Its Association With Mortality
Background: Information is scarce regarding effects of antihypertensive medication on blood pressure variability (BPV) and associated clinical outcomes. We examined whether antihypertensive treatment changes BPV over time and whether such change (decline or increase) has any association with long-term mortality in an elderly hypertensive population. Methods and Results: We used data from a subset of participants in the Second Australian National Blood Pressure study (n=496) aged ≥65 years who had 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure recordings at study entry (baseline) and then after a median of 2 years while on treatment (follow-up). Weighted day-night systolic BPV was calculated for both baseline and follow-up as a weighted mean of daytime and nighttime blood pressure standard deviations. The annual rate of change in BPV over time was calculated from these BPV estimates. Furthermore, we classified both BPV estimates as high and low based on the baseline median BPV value and then classified BPV changes into stable: low BPV, stable: high BPV, decline: high to low, and increase: low to high. We observed an annual decline (mean±SD: −0.37±1.95; 95% CI, −0.54 to −0.19; P<0.001) in weighted day-night systolic BPV between baseline and follow-up. Having constant stable: high BPV was associated with an increase in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 3.03; 95% CI, 1.67–5.52) and cardiovascular mortality (hazard ratio: 3.70; 95% CI, 1.62–8.47) in relation to the stable: low BPV group over a median 8.6 years after the follow-up ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Similarly, higher risk was observed in the decline: high to low group. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that in elderly hypertensive patients, average BPV declined over 2 years of follow-up after initiation of antihypertensive therapy, and having higher BPV (regardless of any change) was associated with increased long-term mortality
Pulmonary-to-Systemic Arterial Shunt to Treat Children With Severe Pulmonary Hypertension
BACKGROUND: The placement of a pulmonary-to-systemic arterial shunt in children with severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) has been demonstrated, in relatively small studies, to be an effective palliation for their disease. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to expand upon these earlier findings using an international registry for children with PH who have undergone a shunt procedure. METHODS: Retrospective data were obtained from 110 children with PH who underwent a shunt procedure collected from 13 institutions in Europe and the United States. RESULTS: Seventeen children died in-hospital postprocedure (15%). Of the 93 children successfully discharged home, 18 subsequently died or underwent lung transplantation (20%); the mean follow-up was 3.1 years (range: 25 days to 17 years). The overall 1- and 5-year freedom from death or transplant rates were 77% and 58%, respectively, and 92% and 68% for those discharged home, respectively. Children discharged home had significantly improved World Health Organization functional class (P < 0.001), 6-minute walk distances (P = 0.047) and lower brain natriuretic peptide levels (P < 0.001). Postprocedure, 59% of children were weaned completely from their prostacyclin infusion (P < 0.001). Preprocedural risk factors for dying in-hospital postprocedure included intensive care unit admission (hazard ratio [HR]: 3.2; P = 0.02), mechanical ventilation (HR: 8.3; P < 0.001) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (HR: 10.7; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A pulmonary-to-systemic arterial shunt can provide a child with severe PH significant clinical improvement that is both durable and potentially free from continuous prostacyclin infusion. Five-year survival is comparable to children undergoing lung transplantation for PH. Children with severely decompensated disease requiring aggressive intensive care are not good candidates for the shunt procedure
