    Supersymmetry on a Spatial Lattice

We construct a variety of supersymmetric gauge theories on a spatial lattice, including N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions. Exact lattice supersymmetry greatly reduces or eliminates the need for fine tuning to arrive at the desired continuum limit in these examples.Comment: Version 3: Text brought in line with published version (extended discussion of orbifolding

Determination of the chiral coupling constants c3 and c4 in new pp and np partial-wave analyses

    Get PDF
As a first result of two new partial-wave analyses, one of the pp and another one of the np scattering data below 500 MeV, we report a study of the long-range chiral two-pion exchange interaction which contains the chiral coupling constants c1, c3, and c4. By using as input a theoretical value for c1 we are able to determine in pp as well as in np scattering accurate values for c3 and c4. The values determined from the pp data and independently from the np data are in very good agreement, indicating the correctness of the chiral two-pion exchange interaction. The weighted averages are c3 = -4.78(10) / GeV and c4 = 3.96(22) / GeV, where the errors are statistical. The value of c3 is best determined from the pp data and that of c4 from the np data.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Recent developments in planet migration theory

Planetary migration is the process by which a forming planet undergoes a drift of its semi-major axis caused by the tidal interaction with its parent protoplanetary disc. One of the key quantities to assess the migration of embedded planets is the tidal torque between the disc and planet, which has two components: the Lindblad torque and the corotation torque. We review the latest results on both torque components for planets on circular orbits, with a special emphasis on the various processes that give rise to additional, large components of the corotation torque, and those contributing to the saturation of this torque. These additional components of the corotation torque could help address the shortcomings that have recently been exposed by models of planet population syntheses. We also review recent results concerning the migration of giant planets that carve gaps in the disc (type II migration) and the migration of sub-giant planets that open partial gaps in massive discs (type III migration).Comment: 52 pages, 18 figures. Mesophyll porosity is modulated by the presence of functional stomata

The formation of stomata and leaf mesophyll airspace must be coordinated to establish an efficient and robust network that facilitates gas exchange for photosynthesis, however the mechanism by which this coordinated development occurs remains unclear. Here, we combine microCT and gas exchange analyses with measures of stomatal size and patterning in a range of wild, domesticated and transgenic lines of wheat and Arabidopsis to show that mesophyll airspace formation is linked to stomatal function in both monocots and eudicots. Our results support the hypothesis that gas flux via stomatal pores influences the degree and spatial patterning of mesophyll airspace formation, and indicate that this relationship has been selected for during the evolution of modern wheat. We propose that the coordination of stomata and mesophyll airspace pattern underpins water use efficiency in crops, providing a target for future improvement

In human type 1 diabetes (T1D) and in its murine model, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules, human leukocyte antigens (HLA)-DQ and -DR and their murine orthologues, IA and IE, are the major genetic determinants. In this report, we have ranked HLA class II molecule-associated T1D risk in a two-sided gradient from very high to very low. Very low risk corresponded to dominant protection from T1D. We predicted the protein structure of DQ by using the published crystal structures of different allotypes of the murine orthologue of DQ, IA. We discovered marked similarities both within, and cross species between T1D protective class II molecules. Likewise, the T1D predisposing molecules showed conserved similarities that contrasted with the shared patterns observed between the protective molecules. We also found striking inter-isotypic conservation between protective DQ, IA allotypes and protective DR4 subtypes. The data provide evidence for a joint action of the class II peptide-binding pockets P1, P4 and P9 in disease susceptibility and resistance with a main role for P9 in DQ/IA and for P1 and P4 in DR/IE. Overall, these results suggest shared epitope(s) in the target autoantigen(s), and common pathways in human and murine T1D

A Proposal for a Detector 2 km Away From the T2K Neutrino Source

We propose building a detector site 2km from the neutrino production point of the the T2K experiment. At this distance, almost the same neutrino flux is measured as that seen at Super-K 295 km away. We propose to measure this flux with both a 1 kton water Cherenkov detector which has been optimized to match Super-K resolution, and a 100 ton fiducial volume liquid argon time projection chamber which will provide fine grain imaging and low particle detection thresholds for a precise study of neutrino interactions at the relevant energies. High energy muons which exit the water Cherenkov detector will be measured by an iron muon ranger. In this document, we show that combination of a detector made with the same target as Super-K, with almost the same detector response, and an extremely fine-grained tracking chamber sited in the off-axis beam, will allow us to predict the events seen at Super-K with very little correction other than that of geometric acceptance
