Transformer-based interpretable multi-modal data fusion for skin lesion classification
A lot of deep learning (DL) research these days is mainly focused on
improving on quantitative metrics regardless of other factors. In human
centered applications, like skin lesion classification in dermatology,
DL-driven clinical decision support systems are still in their infancy due to
the limited transparency of their decision-making process. Moreover, the lack
of procedures that can explain the behavior of trained DL algorithms leads to
almost no trust from the clinical physicians. To diagnose skin lesions,
dermatologists rely on both visual assessment of the disease and the data
gathered from the anamnesis of the patient. Data-driven algorithms dealing with
multi-modal data are limited by the separation of feature-level and
decision-level fusion procedures required by convolutional architectures. To
address this issue, we enable single-stage multi-modal data fusion via the
attention mechanism of transformer-based architectures to aid in the diagnosis
of skin diseases. Our method beats other state-of-the-art single- and
multi-modal DL architectures in both image rich and patient-data rich
environments. Additionally, the choice of the architecture enables native
interpretability support for the classification task both in image and metadata
domain with no additional modifications necessary.Comment: Submitted to IEEE TMI in March 202

Reduction in school time and gifted education. How do WĂŒrzburgâs junior students in the eight- (G8) and nine-year (G9) secondary school (Gymnasium) differ?
(DIPF/Orig.)The question whether shortening secondary school duration impacts gifted education programs is not well documented yet. We explored how junior students attending the eight-year version of the Bavarian Gymnasium (G8) differed from those attending the previous nine-year Gymnasium version (G9). Participants of the G8-cohort (N = 377) were compared to those of the G9-cohort (N = 201) regarding demographic variables as well as criteria from the selection process and from the junior study program. In the G9-cohort, more male students participated, whereas the ratio of males and females in the G9-cohort was almost balanced. As expected, participantsâ age and grade level at the time of admission were significantly lower in the G8-cohort than in the G9-cohort. Whereas the cohorts did not differ in terms of intellectual ability, the G8-cohort demonstrated better school grades than the G9-cohort. Junior students in the G9 participated significantly longer (number of semesters), more extensively (number of courses), and earned more credits than the G8-cohort. Apparently, the G9-cohort was able to raise more resources for their junior studies than the G8-cohort. (DIPF/Orig.
Peer review analysis in the field of radiation oncology: results from a web-based survey of the Young DEGRO working group
PURPOSE To evaluate the reviewing behaviour in the German-speaking countries in order to provide recommendations to increase the attractiveness of reviewing activity in the field of radiation oncology.
METHODS In November 2019, a survey was conducted by the Young DEGRO working group (jDEGRO) using the online platform âeSurveyCreatorâ. The questionnaire consisted of 29 items examining a~broad range of factors that influence reviewing motivation and performance.
RESULTS A total of 281 responses were received. Of these, 154 (55%) were completed and included in the evaluation. The most important factors for journal selection criteria and peer review performance in the field of radiation oncology are the scientific background of the manuscript (85%), reputation of the journal (59%) and a~high impact factor (IF; 40%). Reasons for declining an invitation to review include the scientific background of the article (60%), assumed effort (55%) and a low IF (27%). A~double-blind review process is preferred by 70% of respondents to a single-blind (16%) or an open review process (14%). If compensation was offered, 59% of participants would review articles more often. Only 12% of the participants have received compensation for their reviewing activities so far. As compensation for the effort of reviewing, 55% of the respondents would prefer free access to the journal's articles, 45% a discount for their own manuscripts, 40% reduced congress fees and 39% compensation for expenses.
CONCLUSION The scientific content of the manuscript, reputation of the journal and a~high IF determine the attractiveness for peer reviewing in the field of radiation oncology. The majority of participants prefer a~double-blind peer review process and would conduct more reviews if compensation was available. Free access to journal articles, discounts for publication costs or congress fees, or an expense allowance were identified to increase attractiveness of the review process
The Ribosome Biogenesis Protein Nol9 Is Essential for Definitive Hematopoiesis and Pancreas Morphogenesis in Zebrafish.
Ribosome biogenesis is a ubiquitous and essential process in cells. Defects in ribosome biogenesis and function result in a group of human disorders, collectively known as ribosomopathies. In this study, we describe a zebrafish mutant with a loss-of-function mutation in nol9, a gene that encodes a non-ribosomal protein involved in rRNA processing. nol9sa1022/sa1022 mutants have a defect in 28S rRNA processing. The nol9sa1022/sa1022 larvae display hypoplastic pancreas, liver and intestine and have decreased numbers of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), as well as definitive erythrocytes and lymphocytes. In addition, ultrastructural analysis revealed signs of pathological processes occurring in endothelial cells of the caudal vein, emphasizing the complexity of the phenotype observed in nol9sa1022/sa1022 larvae. We further show that both the pancreatic and hematopoietic deficiencies in nol9sa1022/sa1022 embryos were due to impaired cell proliferation of respective progenitor cells. Interestingly, genetic loss of Tp53 rescued the HSPCs but not the pancreatic defects. In contrast, activation of mRNA translation via the mTOR pathway by L-Leucine treatment did not revert the erythroid or pancreatic defects. Together, we present the nol9sa1022/sa1022 mutant, a novel zebrafish ribosomopathy model, which recapitulates key human disease characteristics. The use of this genetically tractable model will enhance our understanding of the tissue-specific mechanisms following impaired ribosome biogenesis in the context of an intact vertebrate. The study was supported by Cancer Research UK (grant number C45041/A14953 to AC and LF), Wellcome Trust (grants number 084183/Z/07/Z to EBM and number 098051 to DLS and LLH), Specialist Programme from Bloodwise [12048], the Medical Research Council [MC_U105161083] and Tedâs Gang (to AJW), a Wellcome Trust strategic award to the Cambridge Institute for Medal Research [100140] and the Cambridge NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (to AJW and AC). An artificial intelligence algorithm is highly accurate for detecting endoscopic features of eosinophilic esophagitis
The endoscopic features associated with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) may be missed during routine endoscopy. We aimed to develop and evaluate an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm for detecting and quantifying the endoscopic features of EoE in white light images, supplemented by the EoE Endoscopic Reference Score (EREFS). An AI algorithm (AI-EoE) was constructed and trained to differentiate between EoE and normal esophagus using endoscopic white light images extracted from the database of the University Hospital Augsburg. In addition to binary classification, a second algorithm was trained with specific auxiliary branches for each EREFS feature (AI-EoE-EREFS). The AI algorithms were evaluated on an external data set from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC), and compared with the performance of human endoscopists with varying levels of experience. The overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of AI-EoE were 0.93 for all measures, while the AUC was 0.986. With additional auxiliary branches for the EREFS categories, the AI algorithm (AI-EoE-EREFS) performance improved to 0.96, 0.94, 0.95, and 0.992 for sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC, respectively. AI-EoE and AI-EoE-EREFS performed significantly better than endoscopy beginners and senior fellows on the same set of images. An AI algorithm can be trained to detect and quantify endoscopic features of EoE with excellent performance scores. The addition of the EREFS criteria improved the performance of the AI algorithm, which performed significantly better than endoscopists with a lower or medium experience level
Major flaws in conflict prevention policies towards Africa : the conceptual deficits of international actorsâ approaches and how to overcome them
Current thinking on African conflicts suffers from misinterpretations oversimplification, lack of focus, lack of conceptual clarity, state-centrism and lack of vision). The paper analyses a variety of the dominant explanations of major international actors and donors, showing how these frequently do not distinguish with sufficient clarity between the âroot causesâ of a conflict, its aggravating factors and its triggers. Specifically, a correct assessment of conflict prolonging (or sustaining) factors is of vital importance in Africaâs lingering confrontations. Broader approaches (e.g. âstructural stabilityâ) offer a better analytical framework than familiar one-dimensional explanations. Moreover, for explaining and dealing with violent conflicts a shift of attention from the nation-state towards the local and sub-regional level is needed.
