He describes John LeFlore’s leadership qualities and his work with the Non-Partisan Voters League, and contrasts him with other civil rights leaders. Glycerol monolaurate inhibits lipase production by clinical ocular isolates without affecting bacterial cell viability
PURPOSE. We sought to determine the relative lipase production of a range of ocular bacterial isolates and to assess the efficacy of glycerol monolaurate (GML) in inhibiting this lipase production in high lipase-producing bacteria without affecting bacterial cell growth. METHODS. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes, and Corynebacterium spp. were inoculated at a density of 106/mL in varying concentrations of GML up to 25 μg/mL for 24 hours at 378C with constant shaking. Bacterial suspensions were centrifuged, bacterial cell density was determined, and production of bacterial lipase was quantified using a commercial lipase assay kit. RESULTS. Staphylococcus spp. produced high levels of lipase activity compared with P. acnes and Corynebacterium spp. GML inhibited lipase production by Staphylococcal spp. in a dosedependent manner, with S. epidermidis lipase production consistently more sensitive to GML than S. aureus. Glycerol monolaurate showed significant (P \u3c 0.05) lipase inhibition above concentrations of 15 μg /mL in S. aureus and was not cytotoxic up to 25 μg /mL. For S. epidermidis, GML showed significant (P \u3c 0.05) lipase inhibition above 7.5 μg /mL. CONCLUSIONS. Lipase activity varied between species and between strains. Staphylococcal spp. produced higher lipase activity compared with P. acnes and Corynebacterium spp. Glycerol monolaurate inhibited lipase production by S. aureus and S. epidermidis at concentrations that did not adversely affect bacterial cell growth. GML can be used to inhibit ocular bacterial lipase production without proving detrimental to commensal bacteria viability
Stochastic Background Search Correlating ALLEGRO with LIGO Engineering Data
We describe the role of correlation measurements between the LIGO
interferometer in Livingston, LA, and the ALLEGRO resonant bar detector in
Baton Rouge, LA, in searches for a stochastic background of gravitational
waves. Such measurements provide a valuable complement to correlations between
interferometers at the two LIGO sites, since they are sensitive in a different,
higher, frequency band. Additionally, the variable orientation of the ALLEGRO
detector provides a means to distinguish gravitational wave correlations from
correlated environmental noise. We describe the analysis underway to set a
limit on the strength of a stochastic background at frequencies near 900 Hz

Binary-induced collapse of a compact, collisionless cluster
We improve and extend Shapiro's model of a relativistic, compact object which
is stable in isolation but is driven dynamically unstable by the tidal field of
a binary companion. Our compact object consists of a dense swarm of test
particles moving in randomly-oriented, initially circular, relativistic orbits
about a nonrotating black hole. The binary companion is a distant, slowly
inspiraling point mass. The tidal field of the companion is treated as a small
perturbation on the background Schwarzschild geometry near the hole; the
resulting metric is determined by solving the perturbation equations of Regge
and Wheeler and Zerilli in the quasi-static limit. The perturbed spacetime
supports Bekenstein's conjecture that the horizon area of a near-equilibrium
black hole is an adiabatic invariant. We follow the evolution of the system and
confirm that gravitational collapse can be induced in a compact collisionless

Enhancing 1α-Hydroxylase Activity with the 25-Hydroxyvitamin D-1α-Hydroxylase Gene in Cultured Human Keratinocytes and Mouse Skin
1α,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3) and its analogs are used to treat psoriasis because of their potent antiproliferative activity. They have the potential for causing hypercalcemia, however, and patients often become resistant to the drug. We examined the feasibility of enhancing the cutaneous production of 1α,25(OH)2D3 using a human 25-hydroxyvitamin D-1α-hydroxylase (1α-OHase) plasmid. The 1α-OHase gene was fused to the green fluorescent protein gene (1α-OHase-GFP) driven by the cytomegalovirus promoter. Transfection of cultured normal human keratinocytes with the 1α-OHase-GFP plasmid resulted in a marked increase in the expression of 1α-OHase-GFP in the mitochondria. Transfection of keratinocytes with 1α-OHase-GFP or 1α-OHase plasmids in vitro enhanced the 1α-OHase activity substantially and increased the sensitivity of the keratinocytes to the antiproliferative effect of 25(OH)D3. The 1α-OHase-GFP plasmid was topically applied to shaved C57/BL6 mice. Twenty-four hours after topical application, immunohistochemical analysis of the skin for 1α-OHase-GFP revealed the presence of 1α-OHase-GFP in the epidermis and epidermal appendages including the hair follicles. The results from this study offer a unique new approach for the topical treatment of hyperproliferative disorders such as psoriasis and skin cancer using the 1α-OHase gene that could locally increase the production of 1α,25(OH)2D3 without causing hypercalcemia or resistance
First upper limit analysis and results from LIGO science data: stochastic background
I describe analysis of correlations in the outputs of the three LIGO
interferometers from LIGO's first science run, held over 17 days in August and
September of 2002, and the resulting upper limit set on a stochastic background
of gravitational waves. By searching for cross-correlations between the LIGO
detectors in Livingston, LA and Hanford, WA, we are able to set a 90%

Partial weight reduction protocols in cats lead to better weight outcomes, compared with complete protocols, in cats with obesity
BackgroundTo date, there have been no studies comparing outcomes of cats with obesity following either complete or partial weight reduction protocols.MethodsFifty-eight cats participated in this non-randomized observational cohort study, including 46 (79%) and 12 (21%) that underwent complete or partial weight reduction protocols, respectively. Weight loss outcomes, body composition changes and essential nutrient intake were compared between cats in the two groups.ResultsAll cats remained healthy, and those on a complete weight reduction protocol lost a median of 23% (range 10–39%) of starting body weight (SBW) over 294 days (113–967 days), whereas those undergoing partial restriction lost 25% (10–41%) over 178 days (54–512 days). Neither duration nor percentage weight loss differed between groups, but those that followed a partial weight reduction protocol lost weight at a faster rate (0.81% per week) and required fewer visits (4–19) than those that followed a complete weight reduction protocol (0.61% per week, p = 0.028; 11, 4–40 visits, p = 0.009). Further, lean tissue mass declined in cats on a complete weight reduction protocol (pre: 4.20 kg, 2.64–5.72 kg; post: 3.90 kg, 2.76–5.24 kg, p < 0.001), whereas lean tissue mass was unchanged in cats on partial weight reduction protocols (pre: 3.45 kg, 2.79–4.71 kg; post: 3.41 kg, 2.90–4.59 kg, p = 0.109). In 33 (57%) cats, median intake of selenium per day was less than NRC AI and RA recommendations, whilst intake was under FEDIAF recommendation in 42 (72%) cats. Median intake of choline per day was less than NRC MR and RA recommendations in 22 (38%) and 53 (91%) cats, respectively, whereas it was under the FEDIAF recommendation in 51 (88%) cats. In a small proportion (12–14%) of cats, phenylalanine/tyrosine and potassium were under recommendations; besides these, no other essential nutrient deficiencies were seen, and there were no differences between cats undergoing complete and partial weight reduction.ConclusionPartial weight reduction protocols in cats lead to quicker average weight loss, with the possibility that lean tissue loss might be minimized. Such protocols might be more suitable for older cats and those with marked obesity
Tidal interaction in binary black hole inspiral
In rotating viscous fluid stars, tidal torque leads to an exchange of spin
and orbital angular momentum. The horizon of a black hole has an effective
viscosity that is large compared to that of stellar fluids, and an effective
tidal torque may lead to important effects in the strong field interaction at
the endpoint of the inspiral of two rapidly rotating holes. In the most
interesting case both holes are maximally rotating and all angular momenta
(orbital and spins) are aligned. We point out here that in such a case (i) the
transfer of angular momentum may have an important effect in modifying the
gravitational wave ``chirp'' at the endpoint of inspiral. (ii) The tidal
transfer of spin energy to orbital energy may increase the amount of energy
being radiated. (iii) Tidal transfer in such systems may provide a mechanism
for shedding excess angular momentum. We argue that numerical relativity, the
only tool for determining the importance of tidal torque, should be more
specifically focused on binary configurations with aligned, large, angular
