Bonding with Self-etching Primers – Pumice or Pre-etch? An \u3cem\u3ein vitro\u3c/em\u3e Study
The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strengths (SBSs) of orthodontic brackets bonded with self-etching primer (SEP) using different enamel surface preparations. A two-by-two factorial study design was used. Sixty human premolars were harvested, cleaned, and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 15 per group). Teeth were bathed in saliva for 48 hours to form a pellicle. Treatments were assigned as follows: group 1 was pumiced for 10 seconds and pre-etched for 5 seconds with 37 per cent phosphoric acid before bonding with SEP (Transbond Plus). Group 2 was pumiced for 10 seconds before bonding. Group 3 was pre-etched for 5 seconds before bonding. Group 4 had no mechanical or chemical preparation before bonding. All teeth were stored in distilled water for 24 hours at 37°C before debonding. The SBS values and adhesive remnant index (ARI) score were recorded. The SBS values (±1 SD) for groups 1–4 were 22.9 ± 6.6, 16.1 ± 7.3, 36.2 ± 8.2, and 13.1 ± 10.1 MPa, respectively. Two-way analysis of variance and subsequent contrasts showed statistically significant differences among treatment groups. ARI scores indicated the majority of adhesive remained on the bracket for all four groups. Pre-etching the bonding surface for 5 seconds with 37 per cent phosphoric acid, instead of pumicing, when using SEPs to bond orthodontic brackets, resulted in greater SBSs

Fire ecology of ponderosa pine and the rebuilding of fire-resilient ponderosa pine ecosystems
The ponderosa pine ecosystem of the West have changed dramatically since Euro-American settlement 140 years ago due to past land uses and the curtailment of natural fire. Today, ponderosa pine forests contain over abundance of fuel, and stand densities have increased from a grange of 49-124 trees per ha (20-50 trees pper acre) to a range of 1235-2470 trees per ha (500 to 100 stems per acre). As a result, long-term stand and landscape health has been compromised and stand and landscape conditions now promote large, uncharacteristic wildfires. Reversing this trend is paramount. Improving the fire-resiliency of ponderosa pine forests requires understanding the connection between fire behavior and severity and the forest structure and fuels. Restoration treatments (thinning, prescribed fire, mowing, and other mechanical treatments) that reduce surface, ladder, and crown fuels can reduce fire severity and the potential for high-intensity crown fires. Understanding the historical role of fire in shaping ponderosa pine ecosystems is important for designing restoration treatments. Without intelligent, ecosystem-based restoration treatments in the near term, forest health and wildfire conditions will continue to deteriorate in the long term and the situation is not likely to rectify itself
Strained Silicon on Silicon by Wafer Bonding and Layer Transfer from Relaxed SiGe Buffer
We report the creation of strained silicon on silicon (SSOS) substrate technology. The method uses a relaxed SiGe buffer as a template for inducing tensile strain in a Si layer, which is then bonded to another Si handle wafer. The original Si wafer and the relaxed SiGe buffer are subsequently removed, thereby transferring a strained-Si layer directly to Si substrate without intermediate SiGe or oxide layers. Complete removal of Ge from the structure was confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy as well as secondary ion mass spectrometry. A plan-view transmission electron microscopy study of the strained-Si/Si interface reveals that the lattice-mismatch between the layers is accommodated by an orthogonal array of edge dislocations. This misfit dislocation array, which forms upon bonding, is geometrically necessary and has an average spacing of approximately 40nm, in excellent agreement with established dislocation theory. To our knowledge, this is the first study of a chemically homogeneous, yet lattice-mismatched, interface.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Treatment recommendations for psoriatic arthritis
Objective: To develop comprehensive recommendations for the treatment of the various clinical manifestations of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) based on evidence obtained from a systematic review of the literature and from consensus opinion. Methods: Formal literature reviews of treatment for the most significant discrete clinical manifestations of PsA (skin and nails, peripheral arthritis, axial disease, dactylitis and enthesitis) were performed and published by members of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Treatment recommendations were drafted for each of the clinical manifestations by rheumatologists, dermatologists and PsA patients based on the literature reviews and consensus opinion. The level of agreement for the individual treatment recommendations among GRAPPA members was assessed with an online questionnaire. Results: Treatment recommendations were developed for peripheral arthritis, axial disease, psoriasis, nail disease, dactylitis and enthesitis in the setting of PsA. In rotal, 19 recommendations were drafted, and over 80% agreement was obtained on 16 of them. In addition, a grid that factors disease severity into each of the different disease manifestations was developed to help the clinician with treatment decisions for the individual patient from an evidenced-based perspective. Conclusions: Treatment recommendations for the cardinal physical manifestations of PsA were developed based on a literature review and consensus between rheumatologists and dermatologists. In addition, a grid was established to assist in therapeutic reasoning and decision making for individual patients. It is anticipated that periodic updates will take place using this framework as new data become available

Successful reforestation : an overview
So you’d like to plant some trees! As the saying goes, “The best
time to plant a tree was 30 years ago—the next best time is now.” This publication gets you started on the right track and answers some common reforestation questions.Published October 2008. SiGe-On-Insulator (SGOI): Two Structures for CMOS Application
Two SiGe-on-insulator (SGOI) structures for CMOS application are presented: surface-channel strained-Si on SGOI (SSOI) and dual-channel SGOI structures. Comparisons between two structures are made from both device performance and CMOS process point of view. We have demonstrated both structures on SGOI, and have fabricated n-MOSFET’s and p-MOSFET’s on those two structures respectively. Device characteristics are presented. The devices show enhancement on both electron and hole mobilities.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Psoriatic arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a complex inflammatory disease with heterogeneous clinical features, which complicates psoriasis in 30% of patients. There are no diagnostic criteria or tests available. Diagnosis is most commonly made by identifying inflammatory musculoskeletal features in joints, entheses or the spine in the presence of skin and/or nail psoriasis and in the usual absence of rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide. The evolution of psoriasis to PsA may occur in stages, although the mechanisms are unclear. In many patients, there may be little or no relationship between severity of musculoskeletal inflammation and severity of skin or nail psoriasis. The reason for this disease heterogeneity may be explained by differences in genotype, especially in the HLA region. New targeted therapies for PsA have been approved with additional therapies in development. These developments have substantially improved both short-term and long-term outcomes including a reduction in musculoskeletal and skin manifestations and in radiographic damage. With efforts underway aimed at improving our understanding of the molecular basis for the heterogeneity of PsA, a personalized approach to treating PsA may become possible
