Planning for the mobile library: a strategy for managing innovation and transformation at the University of Glasgow Library
Modern mobile devices have powerful features that are transforming access to information. Lippincott argues that as mobile devices such as smartphones become ‘key information devices’ for our users, libraries will want to have a significant presence in offering content and services that are suitable for this medium. This article outlines the process of development and implementation of a mobile strategy at the University of Glasgow Library. What began as an investigation into a mobile interface to the library catalogue evolved into a comprehensive strategic review of how we deliver services now and in the future in this rapidly changing mobile environment
Correlation between prescribing quality and pharmaceutical costs in English primary care: national cross-sectional analysis
Background Both pharmaceutical costs and quality-indicator performance vary substantially between general practices, but little is known about the relationship between prescribing costs and quality Aim To measure the association between prescribing quality and pharmaceutical costs among English general practices Design and setting Cross-sectional observational study using data from the Quality and Outcomes Framework and the Prescribing Analysis and Cost database from all 8409 general practices in England in 2005-2006 Method Correlation between practice achievement of 26 prescribing quality indicators in eight prescribing areas and related pharmaceutical costs was examined. Results There was no significant association between the overall achievement of quality indicators and related pharmaceutical costs (P= 0.399). Mean achievement of quality indicators across all eight prescribing areas was 79.0% (standard deviation 4.4%). Tracking the Flow of Ideas through the Programming Languages Literature
How have conferences like ICFP, OOPSLA, PLDI, and POPL evolved over the last 20 years? Did generalizing the Call for Papers for OOPSLA in 2007 or changing the name of the umbrella conference to SPLASH in 2010 have any effect on the kinds of papers published there? How do POPL and PLDI papers compare, topic-wise? Is there related work that I am missing? Have the ideas in O\u27Hearn\u27s classic paper on separation logic shifted the kinds of papers that appear in POPL? Does a proposed program committee cover the range of submissions expected for the conference? If we had better tools for analyzing the programming language literature, we might be able to answer these questions and others like them in a data-driven way. Library Consultation Assessment: Examining Time and Difficulty Across Patron Type, Format, and Location
Patron consultations, ranging from simple directions to complex research inquiries, are a notable component of librarians’ work. Research has examined different facets of these consultations, such as topic, skill development, and location, however, fewer studies have examined the duration and difficulty of those library consultations. We examine both the time and difficulty of library consultations across patron type (e.g. community member, undergraduate student), format (e.g. email, in person), as well as campus location (e.g. Atlanta, Decatur, Clarkston). Data used for this analysis is from the Patron Transaction log for Georgia State University Library which contains over 150,000 consultations
A Simple Kinetic Model Describes the Processivity of Myosin-V
Myosin-V is a motor protein responsible for organelle and vesicle transport
in cells. Recent single-molecule experiments have shown that it is an efficient
processive motor that walks along actin filaments taking steps of mean size
close to 36 nm. A theoretical study of myosin-V motility is presented following
an approach used successfully to analyze the dynamics of conventional kinesin
but also taking some account of step-size variations. Much of the present
experimental data for myosin-V can be well described by a two-state chemical
kinetic model with three load-dependent rates. In addition, the analysis
predicts the variation of the mean velocity and of the randomness -- a
quantitative measure of the stochastic deviations from uniform, constant-speed
motion -- with ATP concentration under both resisting and assisting loads, and
indicates a {\it sub}step of size 13-14 nm (from the ATP-binding

Electron transport in the dye sensitized nanocrystalline cell
Dye sensitised nanocrystalline solar cells (Gr\"{a}tzel cells) have achieved
solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiencies of 12% in diffuse daylight.
The cell is based on a thin film of dye-sensitised nanocrystalline TiO
interpenetrated by a redox electrolyte. The high surface area of the TiO
and the spectral characteristics of the dye allow the device to harvest 46% of
the solar energy flux. One of the puzzling features of dye-sensitised
nano-crystalline solar cells is the slow electron transport in the titanium
dioxide phase. The available experimental evidence as well as theoretical
considerations suggest that the driving force for electron collection at the
substrate contact arises primarily from the concentration gradient, ie the
contribution of drift is negligible. The transport of electrons has been
characterised by small amplitude pulse or intensity modulated illumination.
Here, we show how the transport of electrons in the Gr\"{a}tzel cell can be
described quantitatively using trap distributions obtained from a novel charge
extraction method with a one-dimensional model based on solving the continuity
equation for the electron density. For the first time in such a model, a back
reaction with the I ions in the electrolyte that is second order in the

Saggitarius: A DSL for Specifying Grammatical Domains
Common data types like dates, addresses, phone numbers and tables can have
multiple textual representations, and many heavily-used languages, such as SQL,
come in several dialects. These variations can cause data to be misinterpreted,
leading to silent data corruption, failure of data processing systems, or even
security vulnerabilities. Saggitarius is a new language and system designed to
help programmers reason about the format of data, by describing grammatical
domains -- that is, sets of context-free grammars that describe the many
possible representations of a datatype. We describe the design of Saggitarius
via example and provide a relational semantics. We show how Saggitarius may be
used to analyze a data set: given example data, it uses an algorithm based on
semi-ring parsing and MaxSAT to infer which grammar in a given domain best
matches that data. We evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm on a
benchmark suite of 110 example problems, and we demonstrate that our system
typically returns a satisfying grammar within a few seconds with only a small
number of examples. We also delve deeper into a more extensive case study on
using Saggitarius for CSV dialect detection. Despite being general-purpose, we
find that Saggitarius offers comparable results to hand-tuned, specialized
tools; in the case of CSV, it infers grammars for 84% of benchmarks within 60
seconds, and has comparable accuracy to custom-built dialect detection tools.Comment: OOPSLA 202
