Anti-de Sitter massless scalar field spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions

We consider dd-dimensional static spacetimes in Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant in the presence of a minimally coupled massless scalar field. The spacetimes have a (d−2)(d-2)-dimensional base manifold given by an Einstein space and the massless scalar field depends only on the radial coordinate. The field equations are decoupled in the general case, and can be solved exactly for the cases when either the cosmological constant vanishes or the base manifold is Ricci flat. We focus on the case of a negative cosmological constant and a Ricci-flat base manifold. The solution has a curvature singularity located at the origin, where also the scalar field diverges. Since there is no event horizon surrounding this singularity, the solution describes a naked singularity dressed with a nontrivial scalar field. This spacetime is an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter one when the Ricci-flat base manifold is locally flat. The asymptotic solution for an arbitrary Einstein base manifold is found and the corresponding mass, calculated through the canonical generator of the time-translation invariance, is shown to be finite. The contribution to the mass from the scalar field at infinity is also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure. Typos correcte

The influence of clearance on friction, lubrication and squeaking in large diameter metal-on-metal hip replacements

Large diameter metal-on-metal bearings (MOM) are becoming increasingly popular, addressing the needs of young and more active patients. Clinical data has shown excellent short-to-mid-term results, though incidences of transient squeaking have been noted between implantation and up to 2 years post-operative. Geometric design features, such as clearance, have been significant in influencing the performance of the bearings. Sets of MOM bearings with different clearances were investigated in this study using a hip friction simulator to examine the influence of clearance on friction, lubrication and squeaking. The friction factor was found to be highest in the largest clearance bearings under all test conditions. The incidence of squeaking was also highest in the large clearance bearings, with all bearings in this group squeaking throughout the study. A very low incidence of squeaking was observed in the other two clearance groups. The measured lubricating film was found to be lowest in the large clearance bearings. This study suggests that increasing the bearing clearance results in reduced lubricant film thickness, increased friction and an increased incidence of squeaking

Trapped ghosts: a new class of wormholes

    Get PDF
We construct examples of static, spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in general relativity with a minimally coupled scalar field Ï•\phi whose kinetic energy is negative in a restricted region of space near the throat (of arbitrary size) and positive far from it. Thus in such configurations a "ghost" is trapped in the strong-field region, which may in principle explain why no ghosts are observed under usual conditions. Some properties of general wormhole models with the Ï•\phi field are revealed: it is shown that (i) trapped-ghost wormholes are only possible with nonzero potentials V(Ï•)V(\phi); (ii) in twice asymptotically flat wormholes, a nontrivial potential V(Ï•)V(\phi) has an alternate sign, and (iii) a twice asymptotically flat wormhole which is mirror-symmetric with respect to its throat has necessarily a zero Schwarzschild mass at both asymptotics.Comment: 4.2 pages, 4 figures. We show that recent resistivity data on SrRuO_3 for T->T_c are consistent with conventional theory when corrections to scaling are included and a small shift in T_c is allowed.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure; revte

Genetic architecture of the white matter connectome of the human brain

White matter tracts form the structural basis of large-scale functional networks in the human brain. We applied brain-wide tractography to diffusion images from 30,810 adult participants (UK Biobank), and found significant heritability for 90 regional connectivity measures and 851 tract-wise connectivity measures. Multivariate genome- wide association analyses identified 355 independently associated lead SNPs across the genome, of which 77% had not been previously associated with human brain metrics. Enrichment analyses implicated neurodevelopmental processes including neurogenesis, neural differentiation, neural migration, neural projection guidance, and axon development, as well as prenatal brain expression especially in stem cells, astrocytes, microglia and neurons. We used the multivariate association profiles of lead SNPs to identify 26 genomic loci implicated in structural connectivity between core regions of the left-hemisphere language network, and also identified 6 loci associated with hemispheric left-right asymmetry of structural connectivity. Polygenic scores for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, left-handedness, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and epilepsy showed significant multivariate associations with structural connectivity, each implicating distinct sets of brain regions with trait-relevant functional profiles. This large-scale mapping study revealed common genetic contributions to the structural connectome of the human brain in the general adult population, highlighting links with polygenic disposition to brain disorders and behavioural traits

Can the Lepton Flavor Mixing Matrix Be Symmetric?

    Get PDF
Current neutrino oscillation data indicate that the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing matrix V is likely to be symmetric about its V_{e3}-V_{\mu 2}-V_{\tau 1} axis. This off-diagonal symmetry corresponds to three pairs of {\it congruent} unitarity triangles in the complex plane. Terrestrial matter effects can substantially modify the genuine CP-violating parameter and off-diagonal asymmetries of V in realistic long-baseline experiments of neutrino oscillations.Comment: RexTex 14 pages (4 PS figures). Density-functional theory of freezing of vortex-liquid in quasi two-dimensional superconductors

We present a theory of vortex liquid-to-solid transition in homogeneous quasi 2D superconductors. The free energy is written as a functional l of density of zeroes of the fluctuating order parameter. The transition is weakly first-order and well below the Hc2(T) line. Transition temperature, discontinuities of the average Abrikosov ratio and of the average superfluid density, the Debay-Waller factor and the latent heat are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. The density is only weakly modulated in the "vortex-solid" phase, consistent with the density-wave behavior.Comment: 12 pages and 1 figure available upon request, LaTex Version 2.09, submitted to Phys. Self-force of a point charge in the space-time of a massive wormhole

We consider the self-potential and the self-force for an electrically charged particle at rest in the massive wormhole space-time. We develop general approach for the renormalization of electromagnetic field of such particle in the static space-times and apply it to the space-time of the wormhole with parameter of the mass, mm. The self-force is found in manifest form; it is an attractive force. We discus the peculiarities due to massive parameter of the wormhole.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure text correcte
