    Influential Article Review - Corporate Sustainability Management's Cultural Significance

    This paper examines culture and sustainability. We present insights from a highly influential paper. Here are the highlights from this paper: Despite the increasing global popularity of corporate sustainability, a nation’s culture and its effects on activities relating to corporate sustainability are little understood. From the perspective of cultural relevance, this paper investigates the similarities and differences between Korea and Japan in their practices of corporate sustainability. Using questionnaire survey data, we examine the usefulness and applicability of Hofstede’s cultural values (power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and long-term orientation) to corporate sustainability management in the context of Korea and Japan. We find that Hofstede’s cultural values are partially useful and applicable in explaining corporate sustainability practices. From the aspect of the integration of corporate sustainability practices, Hofstede’s cultural value model was applicable, but it was not applicable in explaining cultural differences. This study is the first attempt to examine the cultural relevance of Hofstede’s model in corporate sustainability management practices in a study comparing Korea and Japan. A new theoretical foundation and insights into national culture and its effect on corporate sustainability management provide a basis for further studies.     Family involvement in behaviour management following acquired brain injury (ABI) in community settings: A systematic review

Research Design: Systematic literature review. Methods: Six electronic databases relevant to the field of brain injury were searched between 1980-2013. Citation indexes were used, and references from articles hand searched for further literature. Studies that met the broad inclusion criteria were screened for relevance, and articles selected for full-text review independently considered by two reviewers. Those found to be relevant were analysed using PEDro and McMasters critical appraisal tools. Results: Three hundred and three studies were identified after duplicates were removed and 56 were assessed for relevance, yielding 10 studies for review. Although the majority of studies were weak in design, 5 revealed significant findings supportive of family involvement in the management of behavioural problems following ABI, especially where interventions consisted of both educational components and individualised behavioural plans. Findings revealed no significant changes in family burden following behavioural interventions. Conclusions: There is limited research and lack of high evidence studies evaluating family involvement in behaviour management following ABI; therefore no conclusions can be drawn regarding its efficacy. More research is needed, with larger sample sizes and more rigorous design, including proper comparison groups

    Computational and experimental investigation of Brazilian Free-Tailed bat ear tubercles on an airfoil leading edge

    Preliminary experimental data has indicated that the tubercles on Brazilian Free-Tailed bat ears, when applied to an airfoil leading edge, reduce drag and delay aerodynamic stall. This study's objective was to investigate the potential drag reduction from the tubercles using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model that was validated against experimental data. Initial CFD simulations at Reynolds numbers (Re) of 5,600 and 16,800 and angles of attack of 0 and +/-5 degrees showed slight drag reduction at the non-zero angles, but also indicated inconsistencies with previous experimental work. New experimental data was acquired using particle image velocimetry at Re of 5,600, 16,800, and 20,700. The angle of attack was varied between 0 and 6 degrees in 2 degree increments. The CFD simulations were updated to match these new experimental conditions. At 4 and 6 degrees for Re = 20,700, the experimental and CFD data both confirmed that the tubercles reduced drag, although they differed on the drag reduction magnitude. Since the clean models matched experimental data and the drag reduction trends followed experimental trends at Re = 20,700, these simulations were assumed to be capturing the drag reduction mechanism(s). Conversely, the simulations at low angles of attack (0 and 2 degrees) as well as all angles at Re = 5,600 showed disagreement with the experiments for both the drag reduction trends and magnitudes. The experimental data in these cases exhibited high uncertainties. Improvements are required to reduce experimental uncertainty at Re = 5,600, and further mesh refinements on the tubercled cases and possible changes in flow solvers at the low Reynolds numbers are required to investigate drag reduction magnitudes.     Canopy Management to Improve Grape Yield and Wine Quality - Principles and Practices

    This paper reviews the subject of canopy management with an attempt to develop principles. These principles provide guidelines for canopy surface area amount; spacing between canopies; within canopy shade, especially for the fruiting/ renewal zone; balance between fruit and shoot growth; and uniformity of location of fruit/renewal zones, shoot tips and cane bases. Field techniques of point quadrat analysis and canopy scoring are introduced as an aid to defining problem canopies. These techniques are cheap, quick and effective. A set of twenty-one numeric indices and descriptors to assess winegrape canopies is then presented as a winegrape canopy ideotype, which can be further used as management guidelines. Recent publications are reviewed from various aspects of canopy management. These include vigour control, shoot trimming, leaf removal in the fruit zone and training system responses. The paper concludes with presentation of the authors' unpublished data on the effects of canopy microclimate on yield and wine quality. The trial was conducted with the cultivar Cabernet franc on a deep, fertile soil in a cool, high rainfall region. Canopy division using the Ruakura Twin Two Tier doubled yield compared to dense, vertical shoot positioned canopies which are common in New Zealand. Shade caused reduction in all yield components, and also delayed fruit ripening and reduced wine quality. Similar results were obtained by comparing fruit production at different heights with the Te Kauwhata Three Tier trellis system, where lower tiers were shaded at the canopy exterior. The results confirm that grape yield and wine quaiity can be simultaneously increased by improved canopy management of shaded vineyards

    Screening and Assessment of Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Clinical Practice Guideline for Health Care Providers

    Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most common side effect of cancer treatment. Regular surveillance is recommended, but few clinical practice guidelines transparently assess study bias, quality, and clinical utility in deriving recommendations of screening and assessment methods. The purpose of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to provide recommendations for the screening and assessment of CRF for health care professions treating individuals with cancer. Following best practices for development of a CPG using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) Statement and Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) Guidelines Trust Scorecard, this CPG included a systematic search of the literature, quality assessment of included evidence, and stakeholder input from diverse health care fields to derive the final CPG. Ten screening and 15 assessment tools supported by 114 articles were reviewed. One screen (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer–Quality of Life Questionnaire–30 Core Questionnaire) and 3 assessments (Piper Fatigue Scale–Revised, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy–Fatigue, and Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System [PROMIS] Fatigue-SF) received an A recommendation (“should be used in clinical practice”), and 1 screen and 5 assessments received a B recommendation (“may be used in clinical practice”). Health care providers have choice in determining appropriate screening and assessment tools to be used across the survivorship care continuum. The large number of tools available to screen for or assess CRF may result in a lack of comprehensive research evidence, leaving gaps in the body of evidence for measurement tools. More research into the responsiveness of these tools is needed in order to adopt their use as outcome measures. Impact: Health care providers should screen for and assess CRF using one of the tools recommended by this CPG

    Screening and Assessment of Cancer-Related Fatigue: An Executive Summary and Road Map for Clinical Implementation

    Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) prevalence is reported as high as 90%. Cancer-related fatigue is multidimensional and associated with lower health-related quality of life. Effective screening and assessment are dependent upon use of valid, reliable, and clinically feasible measures. This Executive Summary of the Screening and Assessment of Cancer-related Fatigue Clinical Practice Guideline provides recommendations for best measures to screen and assess for CRF based on the quality and level of evidence, psychometric strength of the tools, and clinical utility. Methods: After a systematic review of the literature, studies evaluating CRF measurement tools were assessed for quality; data extraction included psychometrics and clinical utility. Measurement tools were categorized as either screens or assessments. Results: Four screens are recommended: European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Distress Thermometer, and the One-Item Fatigue Scale. Eight assessments are recommended: Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy—Fatigue, Piper Fatigue Scale—Revised, Brief Fatigue Inventory, Cancer Fatigue Scale, Fatigue Symptom Inventory, Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Fatigue Short Form and CAT, and Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20. Discussion: This Executive Summary is a synopsis of and road map for implementation of the Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and Assessment of CRF. Review of the full Clinical Practice Guideline is recommended. Additional research focused on responsiveness of instruments is needed in order to consider them for use as outcome measures. Screening and assessing CRF will result in opportunities to improve the quality of life of individuals with cancer

    The petrology, geochemistry, and age of lunar regolith breccias Miller Range 090036 and 090070: insights into the crustal history of the Moon

    Meteorites ejected from the surface of the Moon as a result of impact events are an important source of lunar material in addition to Apollo and Luna samples. Here, we report bulk element composition, mineral chemistry, age, and petrography of Miller Range (MIL) 090036 and 090070 lunar meteorites. MIL 090036 and 090070 are both anorthositic regolith breccias consisting of mineral fragments and lithic clasts in a glassy matrix. They are not paired and represent sampling of two distinct regions of the lunar crust that have protoliths similar to ferroan anorthosites. 40Ar-39Ar chronology performed on two subsplits of MIL 090070,33 (a pale clast impact melt and a dark glassy melt component) shows that the sample underwent two main degassing events, one at ~3.88 Ga and another at ~3.65 Ga. The cosmic ray exposure data obtained from MIL 090070 are consistent with a short (~8–9 Ma) exposure close to the lunar surface. Bulk-rock FeO, TiO2, and Th concentrations in both samples were compared with 2-degree Lunar Prospector Gamma Ray Spectrometer (LP-GRS) data sets to determine areas of the lunar surface where the regolith matches the abundances observed on the sample. We find that MIL 090036 bulk rock is compositionally most similar to regolith surrounding the Procellarum KREEP Terrane, whereas MIL 090070 best matches regolith in the feldspathic highlands terrane on the lunar farside. Our results suggest that some areas of the lunar farside crust are composed of ferroan anorthosite, and that the samples shed light on the evolution and impact bombardment history of the ancient lunar highlands

    Determining the thermal histories of Apollo 15 mare basalts using diffusion modelling in olivine

    Mare basalts collected at the Apollo 15 landing site can be classified into two groups. Based on differing whole-rock major element chemistry, these groups are the quartz-normative basalt suite and the olivine-normative basalt suite. In this study we use modelling of Fe-Mg interdiffusion in zoned olivine crystals to investigate the magmatic environments in which the zonation was formed, be that within the lunar crust or during cooling within a surficial lava flow, helping to understand the thermal histories of the two basalt suites. Interdiffusion of Fe-Mg in olivine was modelled in 29 crystals in total, from six olivine-normative basalt thin sections and from three quartz-normative basalt thin sections. We used a dynamic diffusion model that includes terms for both crystal growth and intracrystalline diffusion during magma cooling. Calculated diffusion timescales range from 5 to 24 days for quartz-normative samples, and 6 to 91 days for olivine-normative samples. Similarities in diffusion timescales point to both suites experiencing similar thermal histories and eruptive processes. The diffusion timescales are short (between 5 and 91 days), and compositional zonation is dominated by crystal growth, which indicates that the diffusion most likely took place during cooling and solidification within lava flows at the lunar surface. We used a simple conductive cooling model to link our calculated diffusion timescales with possible lava flow thicknesses, and from this we estimate that Apollo 15 lava flows are a minimum of 3–6 m thick. This calculation is consistent with flow thickness estimates from photographs of lava flows exposed in the walls of Hadley Rille at the Apollo 15 landing site. Our study demonstrates that diffusion modelling is a valuable method of obtaining information about lunar magmatic environments recorded by individual crystals within mare basalt samples

    Constraining the Evolutionary History of the Moon and the Inner Solar System: A Case for New Returned Lunar Samples

    The Moon is the only planetary body other than the Earth for which samples have been collected in situ by humans and robotic missions and returned to Earth. Scientific investigations of the first lunar samples returned by the Apollo 11 astronauts 50 years ago transformed the way we think most planetary bodies form and evolve. Identification of anorthositic clasts in Apollo 11 samples led to the formulation of the magma ocean concept, and by extension the idea that the Moon experienced large-scale melting and differentiation. This concept of magma oceans would soon be applied to other terrestrial planets and large asteroidal bodies. Dating of basaltic fragments returned from the Moon also showed that a relatively small planetary body could sustain volcanic activity for more than a billion years after its formation. Finally, studies of the lunar regolith showed that in addition to containing a treasure trove of the Moon’s history, it also provided us with a rich archive of the past 4.5 billion years of evolution of the inner Solar System. Further investigations of samples returned from the Moon over the past five decades led to many additional discoveries, but also raised new and fundamental questions that are difficult to address with currently available samples, such as those related to the age of the Moon, duration of lunar volcanism, the lunar paleomagnetic field and its intensity, and the record on the Moon of the bombardment history during the first billion years of evolution of the Solar System. In this contribution, we review the information we currently have on some of the key science questions related to the Moon and discuss how future sample-return missions could help address important knowledge gaps
