Extension of the HF program to partially filled f-subshells
A new version of a Hartree-Fock program is presented that includes extensions
for partially filled f-subshells. The program allows the calculation of term
dependent Hartree-Fock orbitals and energies in LS coupling for configurations
with no more than two open subshells, including f-subshells
Are freestanding midwifery units a safe alternative to obstetric units for low-risk, primiparous childbirth?:An analysis of effect differences by parity in a matched cohort study
BACKGROUND: Intrapartum complications and the use of obstetric interventions are more common in primiparous childbirth than in multiparous childbirth, leading to concern about out of hospital birth for primiparous women. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the effect of birthplace on perinatal and maternal morbidity and the use of obstetric interventions differed by parity among low-risk women intending to give birth in a freestanding midwifery unit or in an obstetric unit in the North Denmark Region. METHODS: The study is a secondary analysis of data from a matched cohort study including 839 low-risk women intending birth in a freestanding midwifery unit (primary participants) and 839 low-risk women intending birth in an obstetric unit (individually matched control group). Analysis was by intention-to-treat. Conditional logistic regression analysis was applied to compute odds ratios and effect ratios with 95% confidence intervals for matched pairs stratified by parity. RESULTS: On no outcome did the effect of birthplace differ significantly between primiparous and multiparous women. Compared with their counterparts intending birth in an obstetric unit, both primiparous and multiparous women intending birth in a freestanding midwifery unit were significantly more likely to have an uncomplicated, spontaneous birth with good outcomes for mother and infant and less likely to require caesarean section, instrumental delivery, augmented labour or epidural analgesia (although for caesarean section this trend did not attain statistical significance for multiparous women). Perinatal outcomes were comparable between the two birth settings irrespective of parity. Compared to multiparas, transfer rates were substantially higher for primiparas, but fell over time while rates for multiparas remained stable. CONCLUSIONS: Freestanding midwifery units appear to confer significant advantages over obstetric units to both primiparous and multiparous mothers, while their infants are equally safe in both settings. Our findings thus support the provision of care in freestanding midwifery units as an alternative to care in obstetric units for all low-risk women regardless of parity. In view of the global rise in caesarean section rates, we consider it an important finding that freestanding midwifery units show potential for reducing first-birth caesarean. Isotope shift in the Sulfur electron affinity: observation and theory
The electron affinities eA(S) are measured for the two isotopes 32S and 34S
(16752.9753(41) and 16752.9776(85) cm-1, respectively). The isotope shift in
the electron affinity is found to be positive, eA(34S)-eA(32S) = +0.0023(70)
cm-1, but the uncertainty allows for the possibility that it may be either
"normal" (eA(34S) > eA(32S)) or "anomalous" (eA(34S) < eA(32S)). The isotope
shift is estimated theoretically using elaborate correlation models, monitoring
the electron affinity and the mass polarization term expectation value. The
theoretical analysis predicts a very large specific mass shift that
counterbalances the normal mass shift and produces an anomalous isotope shift,
eA(34S)-eA(32S) = - 0.0053(24) cm-1. The observed and theoretical residual
isotope shifts agree with each other within the estimated uncertainties.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Interactions of the chemokines CXCL11 and CXCL12 in human tumor cells
BACKGROUND
The chemokines, CXCL12 and CXCL11, are upregulated in tumors from many organs and control their progression. CXCL12 and CXCL11 affect tumor cell functions by either binding their prime receptors, CXCR4 and CXCR3, respectively, and/or CXCR7 as a common second chemokine receptor. In humans, CXCR3 exists in the functional splice variants, CXCR3A and CXCR3B, which either have pro- or anti-tumor activity, respectively. Despite the intimate crosstalk between the CXCL12- and CXCL11-system, the impact of a combination of CXCL12 and CXCL11 on tumor progression remains vague.
METHODS
In the present work, we have analyzed CXCL12 and CXCL11 for combined effects on migration, invasion, proliferation, and cytostatic-induced apoptosis of the human tumor cells, A549, A767, A772, DLD-1, and MDA-MB-231.
RESULTS
We demonstrate that the mode of interaction differs with respect to cell type and function and allows for either potentiation, attenuation or no changes of cellular responses. The divergent responses are not the result of the distinct use of different CXCL12- and CXCL11-receptors by the respective tumor cells, but in case of cell migration seem to be associated with the activation of p38 signaling pathways.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings point to therapeutic limitations of ongoing efforts to selectively target CXCR3, CXCR4, or CXCR7 in cancer patients, and rather favor individualized targeting strategies

Variational methods are used for targeting specific correlation effects by tailoring the
configuration space. Independent sets of correlation orbitals, embedded in partitioned correlation
functions (PCFs), are produced from multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) and DiracHartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations. These non-orthogonal functions span configuration state
function (CSF) spaces that are coupled to each other by solving the associated generalized
eigenvalue problem. The Hamiltonian and overlap matrix elements are evaluated using the
biorthonormal orbital transformations and efficient counter-transformations of the configuration
interaction eigenvectors [1]. This method was successfully applied for describing the total
energy of the ground state of beryllium [2]. Using this approach, we demonstrated the fast
energy convergence in comparison with the conventional SD-MCHF method optimizing a single
set of orthonormal one-electron orbitals for the complete configuration space.
In the present work, we investigate the Partitioned Correlation Function Interaction (PCFI)
approach for the two lowest states of neutral lithium, i.e. 1s

. For both states,
we evaluate the total energy, as well as the expectation values of the specific mass shift operator,
the hyperfine structure parameters and the transition probabilities using different models for
tailoring the configuration space. We quantify the “constraint effect” due to the use of fixed PCF
eigenvector compositions and illustrate the possibility of a progressive deconstraint, up to the
non-orthogonal configuration interaction limit case. The PCFI estimation of the position of the
quartet system relative to the ground state of B I will also be presented.
The PCFI method leads to an impressive improvement in the convergence pattern of all the
spectroscopic properties. As such, Li I, Be I and B I constitute perfect benchmarks for the PCFI
method. For larger systems, it becomes hopeless to saturate a single common set of orthonormal
orbitals and the PCFI method is a promising approach for getting high quality correlated wave
functions. The present study constitutes a major step in the current developments of both atsp2K
and grasp2K packages that adopt the biorthonormal treatment for estimating energies, isotope
shifts, hyperfine structures and transition probabilities
