    Proximity-induced spin ordering at the interface between a ferromagnetic metal and a magnetic semiconductor

    14 pĂĄginas, 5 figuras.-- PACS number8s): 73.40.Sx, 75.70.-iWe carry on a theoretical investigation of the conditions for the appearance and/or modification of spin ordering in a dilute magnetic semiconductor that is in contact with a ferromagnetic metal. We show that the magnetic proximity effect has a rather complex physical nature in this system. Allowing for the hybridization between the ferromagnetic metal and semiconductor electron states, we calculate the spin polarization and spin susceptibility of carriers in the semiconductor layer near the contact. The peculiar mechanism of indirect exchange coupling that occurs between local spins dissolved in the semiconductor host when a dilute magnetic semiconductor is in contact with a ferromagnetic metal is analyzed. The structure of the proximity-induced ordering of local moments in a dilute magnetic semiconductor is qualitatively described within a mean-field approach.     Impairment and restrictions in possibly benign multiple sclerosis

    Objective The aim was to describe a broad range of health dimensions in possibly benign multiple sclerosis (MS) hypothesizing that despite some limitations there is a high adaptation to the disease. Methods All patients from an outpatient university clinic data registry with an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) ≀3.5 and disease duration ≄15 years were addressed in a cross-sectional study. Physical impairment, neuropsychological functioning but also influence on activities and patient reported outcome measures including coping were studied. Results One hundred and twenty-five patients could be included (mean EDSS: 2.8; mean disease duration: 24 years). Cognitive impairment was minor (8%) but fatigue (73%) and depression (46%) were prevalent. Nevertheless, QOL and daily activities seemed to be less affected. Patients showed high social support, coping abilities, and sense of coherence, which was predictive for their perceived benignity of the disease. Based on the EDSS alone, we estimated the rate of benign MS after 15 years of MS as high as 23% decreasing to 16% if cognition was included in the definition. However, cognitive performance was not relevantly associated with other outcomes. Conclusion Common benign MS definitions seem to simplify a complex disease picture where different impairments and personal resources lead to more or less impact on people’s lives

    CD90 is dispensable for white and beige/brown adipocyte differentiation

    Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a thermogenic organ in rodents and humans. In mice, the transplantation of BAT has been successfully used to combat obesity and its comorbidities. While such beneficial properties of BAT are now evident, the developmental and cellular origins of brown, beige, and white adipocytes have remained only poorly understood, especially in humans. We recently discovered that CD90 is highly expressed in stromal cells isolated from human white adipose tissue (WAT) compared to BAT. Here, we studied whether CD90 interferes with brown or white adipogenesis or white adipocyte beiging. We applied flow cytometric sorting of human adipose tissue stromal cells (ASCs), a CRISPR/Cas9 knockout strategy in the human Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (SGBS) adipocyte model system, as well as a siRNA approach in human approaches supports the hypothesis that CD90 affects brown or white adipogenesis or white adipocyte beiging in humans. Taken together, our findings call the conclusions drawn from previous studies, which claimed a central role of CD90 in adipocyte differentiation, into question

    Natural Glycoforms of Human Interleukin 6 show atypical plasma clearance

    A library of glycoforms of human interleukin 6 (IL‐6) comprising complex and mannosidic N‐glycans was generated by semisynthesis. The three segments were connected by sequential native chemical ligation followed by two‐step refolding. The central glycopeptide segments were assembled by pseudoproline‐assisted Lansbury aspartylation and subsequent enzymatic elongation of complex N‐glycans. Nine IL‐6 glycoforms were synthesized, seven of which were evaluated for in vivo plasma clearance in rats and compared to non‐glycosylated recombinant IL‐6 from E. coli. Each IL‐6 glycoform was tested in three animals and reproducibly showed individual serum clearances depending on the structure of the N‐glycan. The clearance rates were atypical, since the 2,6‐sialylated glycoforms of IL‐6 cleared faster than the corresponding asialo IL‐6 with terminal galactoses. Compared to non‐glycosylated IL‐6 the plasma clearance of IL‐6 glycoforms was delayed in the presence of larger and multibranched N‐glycans in most case
