The synthesis of benzo[a]phenoxazinium chlorides which are bifunctionalised in position 2 with 4-ethoxy-4-oxobutoxyl, 3-hydroxypropoxyl or 3-chloropropoxyl groups, and in position 9 with the (aminopropyl)amino group, was efficiently performed. The covalent labeling of valine was carried out by using one of the new fluorophores obtained. Photophysical studies in the homogeneous media of ethanol, distilled water and at simulated physiological conditions revealed that all the compounds absorbed and emitted from 610 to 651 nm.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal) - financial support to the NMR portuguese network (PTNMR, Bruker Avance III 400-Univ. The concern for the environment begun to emerge in a more intriguing way in 1960 ́s, and since then a long journey of reflections about the origin and mitigation of atrocities committed by the human being has triggered ecological movements, laws and higher education graduations. However, the root of all environmental barbarism lies on the human being crises and his distorted, corrupted values. Nowadays, the confront with that crises led to an increasing questioning about the human essence, whether individually or collectively or in the field of science. The present qualitative study aimed to evaluate the effect of the natural world experience on the participants of a walk known as Eco or Walking Coaching performed with so-called Animistic Activities – AA (perception exercises, play games and group experiences, mindfulness, among others). The results pointed out that these experiences are an excellent stage for reflections that lead to self-knowledge and, consequently, the revision of values and attitudes that may promote a sustainably happy life

Gas-phase solvolysis type reactions of SiCl3+ cations

    Get PDF
Gas-phase SiCl3+ ions undergo sequential solvolysis type reactions with water, methanol, ammonia, methylamine and propylene. Studies carried out in a Fourier Transform mass spectrometer reveal that these reactions are facile at 10-8 Torr and give rise to substituted chlorosilyl cations. Ab initio and DFT calculations reveal that these reactions proceed by addition of the silyl cation to the oxygen or nitrogen lone pair followed by a 1,3-H migration in the transition state. These transition states are calculated to lie below the energy of the reactants. By comparison, hydrolysis of gaseous CCl3+ is calculated to involve a substantial positive energy barrier

Introduction and hypothesis This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a hybrid telerehabilitation program with a traditional face to face model in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and mixed incontinence (MUI) with a predominance of SUI. The authors hypothesized that home pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) would have a similar benefit to outpatient PFMT. Methods Parallel randomized controlled trial including 58 patients consecutively admitted to a tertiary academic hospital for pelvic floor rehabilitation consultation from 1 January to 30 April 2021 for conservative treatment of UI. Participants randomized to the intervention were submitted to a 12-week PFMT program: (1) a hybrid telerehabilitation program of two individual face-to-face sessions followed by 2-weekly sessions of video-telerehabilitation with a follow-up by a specialized physiotherapist, including one individual face-to-face session at 8 weeks; (2) a re-evaluation teleconsultation at 6 and 16 weeks; (3) a face-to-face consultation at 12 weeks. The control group had two initial individual sessions followed by twice-weekly group classes, and consultations were face to face. The primary outcome measure (at baseline and 12 weeks) was UI-related quality of life using the Portuguese Version of the King's Health Questionnaire. Results At baseline the intervention (n = 18) and control (n = 17) groups were similar. UI-related quality of life significantly improved in both the intervention and control groups betweenbaseline (T0) and the end of the 12-week PFMT program (T12) (p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively), although the magnitude of the improvement was not significantly different between groups (–10.0 vs. –9.5 points, p = 0.918, respectively). Conclusion This hybrid telerehabilitation protocol showed effectiveness comparable to the traditional model in improving UI-related quality of life. Trial registration at www.ClinicalTrials.gov, no. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes and rotational stability of the new aspheric Precizon(®) toric intraocular lens (IOL) for the correction of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Geral de Santo António - Centro Hospitalar do Porto, EPE and Hospital de Pedro Hispano, Matosinhos, Portugal. DESIGN: This was a prospective clinical study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 40 eyes of 27 patients with corneal astigmatism greater than 1.0 diopter (D) underwent cataract surgery with implantation of Precizon(®) toric IOL. IOL power calculation was performed using optical coherence biometry (IOLMaster(®)). Outcomes of uncorrected (UDVA) and best-spectacle corrected distance visual acuities (BCDVA), refraction, and IOL rotation were analyzed at the 1st week, 1st, 3rd, and 6th month's evaluations. RESULTS: The median postoperative UDVA was better than preoperative best-spectacle corrected distance visual acuity (0.02 [0.06] logMAR vs 0.19 [0.20] logMAR, P<0.001). At 6 months, postoperative UDVA was 0.1 logMAR or better in 95% of the eyes. At last follow-up, the mean spherical equivalent was reduced from -3.35±3.10 D to -0.02±0.30 D (P<0.001) with 97.5% of the eyes within ±0.50 D of emmetropia. The mean preoperative keratometric cylinder was 2.34±0.95 D and the mean postoperative refractive cylinder was 0.24±0.27 D (P<0.001). The mean IOL rotation was 2.43°±1.55°. None of the IOLs required realignment. CONCLUSION: Precizon(®) toric IOL revealed very good rotational stability and performance regarding predictability, efficacy, and safety in the correction of preexisting regular corneal astigmatism associated with cataract surgery.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Short- and long-term effects on growth and expression patterns in response to incubation temperatures in Senegalese sole

In this study, the short- and long-term effects of embryo incubation temperatures (16, 18 and 20 °C) on development and growth of the flatfish Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) was determined by investigating the expression patterns of the epigenetic regulators DNA methyltransferases (dnmt) and histone 3 (H3) and genes belonging to the retinoic acid (RA), insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes. Results indicated that egg incubation temperature affected embryo development, but not survival, and incubation at 16 °C significantly delayed development. Coincident with these effects, levels of muscle-specific dnmt3aa transcripts and histone H3 protein levels were significantly different between the 16 and 20 °C groups at hatch. The larvae from eggs incubated at 20 °C relative to the 16 °C group had significantly higher transcript levels of four genes belonging to the HPT axis (trhr1a, tshr, thrb and dio2), four genes of the RA axis (aldh1a2, cyp26a1, rara2, rarg), igfbp1 and the glycolytic enzyme gapdh2. Taken together the data suggest that higher egg incubation temperatures enhance energy production, which accelerates cell proliferation and larval development and that hatching is a key moment for the regulation of epigenetic mechanisms. Long-term effects of egg and larval incubation temperatures were revealed by a higher mRNA abundance of the thyroid-related genes tgb and tpo and the RA degrading enzyme cyp26a1 in pre- and metamorphic larvae when they were incubated at 20 °C as embryos and may be related to the earlier initiation of metamorphosis in the pelagic larval stages. Evaluation of growth in pelagic larvae and juveniles after weaning (one trial from 42 to 119 and another from 164 to 247 days post-hatch using a longitudinal approach) revealed that juveniles from embryos incubated at 20 °C had a higher growth rate. All these data demonstrate that the thermal regime during embryogenesis modulated mechanisms that regulate larval plasticity and caused imprinting evident in juvenile sole as persistent changes in key endocrinological pathways and growth performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
