    Narrow Line Seyfert 1s in the IBISCO sample

    We present the broad-band soft and hard X-ray spectral analysis of 8 Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies extracted from the IBISCO Sample. The study also focuses on the properties of the NLS1 in our sample in relation to those of the IBISCO parent Seyfert population. The IBISCO sample comprises 57 AGN selected from the INTEGRAL IBIS AGN catalogue (in the 20-100 keV band), with z<<0.05 and covering a wide range of luminosities, BH masses and absorption. All AGN have also measurements of the molecular gas (H2_2) content of their host galaxies, through the detection of CO emission lines. The main goals of this analysis are to accurately determine the X-ray continuum emission, investigate the presence of absorption features around 7 keV (indicative of the presence of outflows) and measure the bolometric luminosity in order to study the accretion parameters of the eight IBISCO NLS1, and study the accretion mechanisms and investigate the feeding and feedback cycle in these peculiar AGN. Preliminary results show that NLS1 tend to have higher Eddington ratios and larger molecular gas fractions than their parent Seyfert population in the IBISCO sample.     Gender differences in test anxiety

    The research regarding overall general test anxiety and sex difference is contradictory at best. There is no clear answer to the research question concerning general test anxiety and sex difference according to the literature. An experiment using the modified Suinn Test Anxiety Behavior Scale (1971) was conducted to detect differences between the sexes with regard to test anxiety. There was no overall significant difference between the genders; however, when a multivariate regression was conducted to account for variability contributed by age and class, there was a statistically significant difference. This finding can be perceived as an indication that it is not gender alone that causes significant differences in general test anxiety. More research must be conducted to isolate the variables accounting for significant differences

    Le istituzioni femminili partenopee furono centri indiscutibili di cultura, fucine di mecenatismo, laboratori privilegiati di attività artistiche e di produzioni musicali e diedero un contributo incisivo alla vita culturale e artistica della Napoli vicereale. Monasteri e conservatori impiegarono nel corso dei secoli i musicisti più rappresentativi della città di Napoli a sostegno delle cerimonie liturgiche o per curare la formazione musicale delle religiose e delle figlie ospiti. Il presente studio si propone di indagare e ricostruire le attività musicali di questi enti attraverso lo studio della documentazione proveniente dai principali archivi presenti nella città di Napoli. Le fonti d'archivio permettono infatti di comprendere quale funzione avesse l'arte musicale nella vita dei chiostri. La ricerca intende inoltre considerare la realtà monastica femminile nel suo insieme, esaminando la presenza delle comunità religiose nella città e il loro ruolo all’interno delle dinamiche della vita urbana. L'indagine condotta restituisce oggi una visione attendibile del fenomeno sonoro nel quotidiano delle realtà claustrali, portandoci a comprendere quanto le comunità monastiche femminili contribuirono allo sviluppo di tradizioni musicali, spettacolari, liturgiche

    The research, scientifically coordinated by Professor Giorgio Rocco of the Department ICAR of the Polytechnic University of Bari, starts with the analysis of the archeological findings in the area of San Domenico Convent in Taranto (Apulia, Italy), defining the different historical development stages of the city. The study focused on the analysis of the temple foundations under the Church of San Domenico. The structures, brought to light by an archeological excavation during the late 60s and early 70s, possibly date back to the period between the late 6th and the early 5th century BC. The museological project includes the choice of archeological artifacts that describe the historical and cultural context until the 5th century, following the gradual process of consolidation of the colonial polis. The archaeological collection includes finds drawn from the catalogue of the National Archeological Museum of Taranto (MARTA) and from the catalogue of the Civic Museum of History and Art of Trieste. In the exhibition design special attention is given to emphasize the visit to the temple foundation structures. 283-2 The project's challenge is to strike a balance between the convent historical spaces and the exigencies of continuity in the exhibition of the archeological artifacts. Indeed, to define the exhibition tour we have attempted, on one side, to create an itinerary that allows a suitable display of the selected objects, and on the other, the will to allow a correct understanding of historical spaces

    Development of guide lines for the calculation of carbon footprint of peaches and apricots produced in Metapontino area (Basilicata): the project IQuaSoPO

    The present study is conducted in the framework of the project IQuaSoPO. financed by the regional funds for rural development of Basilicata Region (Italy). It is a three year project which aims to transfer good sustainable practices to local fruit producers. One of the main expected results of the project is to develop guidelines for the calculation of carbon footprint of peaches and apricots, in a life cycle perspective, referred to the productive and geographical specificities of Metapontino area. These guidelines will be used by the local producer to easily assess and communicate the environmental sustainability of their products, which, in this way, will gain added value on the market. Three experimental fields for the production of peaches and apricots in the area of Metaponto are involved in the transfer of knowledge process, about carbon management and water management sustainable practices, which can influence the entity of GHG emissions, by favouring the accumulation of important amounts of carbon and nitrogen in soil and in the perennial parts of peach tree (trunks, branches, roots). Examples of these sustainable management practices are: reduced tillage, soil grass cover, recycling of pruned materials within the field, deficit controlled irrigation, use of compost. In the framework of this study, the three pilot sites are used for inventory data collection, calculation of the carbon footprint, and development of the guidelines. The whole life cycle of the orchards is considered from the tree nursery stage (one or two years), through the establishment, the young, mature and decay stages, and the final destruction, for an average of 15 years. All the agricultural operations have been included in the accounting, in terms of energy consumption and machinery utilization: soil tillage, thinning, pruning, mulching, harvesting, fertilization, plant protection, irrigation, harvesting. Moreover, the life cycle of all the constituent materials of the orchard’s plant and cover structure has been considered (steel wire, cement and aluminum poles, cement blocks, irrigation pipes and water distribution final devices), as well as all the productive inputs’ life cycle (pests and fertilizers). Not just the production phase of the nitrogen fertilizers has been considered, but also the N2O emissions derived from their use. Two different functional units have been used: one kg of peaches/apricot produced and one hectare of cultivated field. The most innovative part of the present study consists in the integration of GHG fluxes occurring within soil-tree-atmosphere system, into the carbon footprint assessment: our aim is to estimate the soil carbon content change, in the considered time boundaries of the study (medium term perspective), related to soil respiration, plant growing, green and brown pruning decomposition, organic compost utilization, cover crop, through sampling activities at field, and using formulas from literature and different models recently emerging in the international scientific community. The guidelines for the carbon footprint calculation along the peach and apricots productive chain in Metapontino region are developed in accordance to the recently published standard ISO 14067; an innovative label for c-footprint communication could be introduced in order to improve the competitiveness of this products on national and international markets

    Acute stimulation of vagus nerve modulates brain neurotrophins, and stimulates neuronal plasticity in the hippocampus of adult male rats

    The present study was aimed at evaluating whether single intermittent acute cervical vagus nerve stimulation (ACVS), pro-vided at a frequency which exhibits a clinical efficacy, may influence brain neurotrophins and hippocampal plasticity. With this purpose, the brain of adult male rats undergoing ACVS was used to analyze the expression of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in brain areas known to synthetize these growth factors, and the expression the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), the synaptophysin (SYP) and biosynthetic GABA (GAD67) in the hippocampus.The effects of ACVS on NGF and BDNF protein and mRNA in hippocampus, hypothalamus and cortex two hours after stimulation were shown to be dependent on the frequencies of ACVS stimulation. Prolonged (three days post stimulation) modifications of NGF and BDNF were also observed in the hippocampus of ACVS rats. An early enhancement of the plasticity markers NCAM, SYP and GAD67 was also found in ACVS hippocampus. Three days after stimulation, NCAM and GAD67 levels were still higher than controls. Immunohistochemistry confirms the stimulatory effects of ACVS on GABA showing an increase in GAD67-positive cells in the dentate gyrus and CA3 hippocampal areas. This study shows that ACVS affects brain NGF and BDNF synthesis in a frequency-dependent manner. Neurotrophins changes are associated with increased hippocampal plasticity, as demonstrated by the observed molecular and morphological modifications. These findings support the role of brain neurotrophins in the ACVS mechanism of action

    Extending Virial Black Hole Mass Estimates to Low-Luminosity or Obscured AGN: the cases of NGC 4395 and MCG -01-24-012

    In the last decade, using single epoch (SE) virial based spectroscopic optical observations, it has been possible to measure the black hole (BH) mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However this kind of measurements can not be applied on those obscured type 2 and/or low luminosity AGN where the nuclear component does not dominate in the optical. We have derived new SE relationships, based on the FWHM and luminosity of the broad line region component of the Pabeta emission line and/or the hard X-ray luminosity in the 14-195 keV band, which have the prospect of better working with low luminosity or obscured AGN. The SE relationships have been calibrated in the 10^5-10^9 M_sol mass range, using a sample of AGN whose BH masses have been previously measured using reverberation mapping techniques. Our tightest relationship between the reverberation-based BH mass and the SE virial product has an intrinsic spread of 0.20 dex. Thanks to these SE relations, in agreement with previous estimates, we have measured a BH mass of M_BH =1.7^+1.3_-0.7 X 10^5 M_sol for the low luminosity, type 1, AGN NGC 4395 (one of the smallest active galactic BH known). We also measured, for the first time, a BH mass of M_BH = 1.5^+1.1_-0.6 X 10^7 M_sol for the Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG -01-24-012.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRA

    Self assembly of highly fluorescent semiconductor nanorods into large scale smectic liquid crystal structures by coffee stain evaporation dynamics

    We deposit droplets of nanorods dispersed in solvents on substrate surfaces and let the solvent evaporate. We find that strong contact line pinning leads to dense nanorod deposition inside coffee stain fringes, where we observe large-scale lateral ordering of the nanorods with the long axis of the rods oriented parallel to the contact line. We observe birefringence of these coffee stain fringes by polarized microscopy and we find the direction of the extraordinary refractive index parallel to the long axis of the nanorods.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures and supporting informatio

    Methylsulfonylmethane and boswellic acids versus glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of knee arthritis: Randomized trial

    Until now glucosamine sulfate (GS) has been the most widely used supplement and has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and boswellic acids (BA) are new effective supplements for the management of inflammation and joint degeneration, according to previous experimental studies. The aim of our study is to test the effectiveness of association of MSM and BA in comparison with GS in knee arthritis.In this prospective randomized clinical trial, MEBAGA (Methylsulfonylmethane and Boswellic Acids versus Glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of knee Arthritis), 120 participants affected by arthritis of the knee were randomly assigned to an experimental group (MB group) or a control group (GS group) treated for 60 days with 5 g of MSM and 7.2 mg of BA or with 1500 mg of GS daily, respectively. At the 2-month (T1) and 6-months (T2) follow-up , the efficacy of these two nutraceuticals was assessed using the visual analog pain scale (VAS) and the Lequesne Index (LI) for joint function, along with the use of anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-cyclooxygenase-2).The repeated measures ANOVA analysis shows that for VAS, LI, and the use of anti-inflammatory drugs scores there are improvements due to the time in the two groups (respectively, F=26.0; P&lt;0.0001; F=4.15; P=0.02; F=3.38; P=0.04), with a tendency to better values for the MB group at T2.On the basis of these preliminary data, we could support the efficacy of the MSM in association with BA in the treatment of OA. These results are consistent with the anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects previously occurred in experimental studies. This new combination of integration (MSM and BS) has presented good results and satisfactory in comparison with GS, until now the cornerstone of the treatment of arthritis in according to guidelines
