Complementarity of dark matter detectors in light of the neutrino background
Direct detection dark matter experiments looking for WIMP-nucleus elastic
scattering will soon be sensitive to an irreducible background from neutrinos
which will drastically affect their discovery potential. Here we explore how
the neutrino background will affect future ton-scale experiments considering
both spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions. We show that combining
data from experiments using different targets can improve the dark matter
discovery potential due to target complementarity. We find that in the context
of spin-dependent interactions, combining results from several targets can
greatly enhance the subtraction of the neutrino background for WIMP masses
below 10 GeV/c and therefore probe dark matter models to lower
cross-sections. In the context of target complementarity, we also explore how
one can tune the relative exposures of different target materials to optimize
the WIMP discovery potential.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 3 table
The return of the four- and five-dimensional preons
We prove the existence of 3/4-BPS preons in four- and five-dimensional gauged
supergravities by explicitly constructing them as smooth quotients of the AdS_4
and AdS_5 maximally supersymmetric backgrounds, respectively. This result
illustrates how the spacetime topology resurrects a fraction of supersymmetry
previously ruled out by the local analysis of the Killing spinor equations.Comment: 10 pages (a minor imprecision has been corrected

Supersymmetry and homogeneity of M-theory backgrounds
We describe the construction of a Lie superalgebra associated to an arbitrary
supersymmetric M-theory background, and discuss some examples. We prove that
for backgrounds with more than 24 supercharges, the bosonic subalgebra acts
locally transitively. In particular, we prove that backgrounds with more than
24 supersymmetries are necessarily (locally) homogeneous.Comment: 19 pages (Erroneous Section 6.3 removed from the paper.
AGN heating, thermal conduction and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in galaxy groups and clusters
(abridged) We investigate in detail the role of active galactic nuclei on the
physical state of the gas in galaxy groups and clusters, and the implications
for anisotropy in the CMB from Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We include the effect
of thermal conduction, and find that the resulting profiles of temperature and
entropy are consistent with observations. Unlike previously proposed models,
our model predicts that isentropic cores are not an inevitable consequence of
preheating. The model also reproduces the observational trend for the density
profiles to flatten in lower mass systems. We deduce the energy E_agn required
to explain the entropy observations as a function of mass of groups and
clusters M_cl and show that E_agn is proportional to M_cl^alpha with alpha~1.5.
We demonstrate that the entropy measurements, in conjunction with our model,
can be translated into constraints on the cluster--black hole mass relation.
The inferred relation is nonlinear and has the form M_bh\propto M_cl^alpha.
This scaling is an analog and extension of a similar relation between the black
hole mass and the galactic halo mass that holds on smaller scales. We show that
the central decrement of the CMB temperature is reduced due to the enhanced
entropy of the ICM, and that the decrement predicted from the plausible range
of energy input from the AGN is consistent with available data of SZ decrement.
We show that AGN heating, combined with the observational constraints on
entropy, leads to suppression of higher multipole moments in the angular power
spectrum and we find that this effect is stronger than previously thought.Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
Supersymmetric exact sequence, heat kernel and super KdV hierarchy
We introduce the free N=1 supersymmetric derivation ring and prove the
existence of an exact sequence of supersymmetric rings and linear
transformations. We apply necessary and sufficient conditions arising from this
exact supersymmetric sequence to obtain the essential relations between
conserved quantities, gradients and the N=1 super KdV hierarchy. We combine
this algebraic approach with an analytic analysis of the super heat operator. We
obtain the explicit expression for the Green's function of the super heat
operator in terms of a series expansion and discuss its properties. The
expansion is convergent under the assumption of bounded bosonic and fermionic
potentials. We show that the asymptotic expansion when of the Green's
function for the super heat operator evaluated over its diagonal generates all
the members of the N=1 super KdV hierarchy.Comment: 20 pages, to be published in JM
Integrated System Health Management (ISHM) for Test Stand and J-2X Engine: Core Implementation
ISHM capability enables a system to detect anomalies, determine causes and effects, predict future anomalies, and provides an integrated awareness of the health of the system to users (operators, customers, management, etc.). NASA Stennis Space Center, NASA Ames Research Center, and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne have implemented a core ISHM capability that encompasses the A1 Test Stand and the J-2X Engine. The implementation incorporates all aspects of ISHM; from anomaly detection (e.g. leaks) to root-cause-analysis based on failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), to a user interface for an integrated visualization of the health of the system (Test Stand and Engine). The implementation provides a low functional capability level (FCL) in that it is populated with few algorithms and approaches for anomaly detection, and root-cause trees from a limited FMEA effort. However, it is a demonstration of a credible ISHM capability, and it is inherently designed for continuous and systematic augmentation of the capability. The ISHM capability is grounded on an integrating software environment used to create an ISHM model of the system. The ISHM model follows an object-oriented approach: includes all elements of the system (from schematics) and provides for compartmentalized storage of information associated with each element. For instance, a sensor object contains a transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS) with information that might be used by algorithms and approaches for anomaly detection, diagnostics, etc. Similarly, a component, such as a tank, contains a Component Electronic Data Sheet (CEDS). Each element also includes a Health Electronic Data Sheet (HEDS) that contains health-related information such as anomalies and health state. Some practical aspects of the implementation include: (1) near real-time data flow from the test stand data acquisition system through the ISHM model, for near real-time detection of anomalies and diagnostics, (2) insertion of the J-2X predictive model providing predicted sensor values for comparison with measured values and use in anomaly detection and diagnostics, and (3) insertion of third-party anomaly detection algorithms into the integrated ISHM model
A Hierarchy of Superstrings
We construct a hierarchy of supersymmetric string theories by showing that
the general N-extended superstrings may be viewed as a special class of the
(N+1)-extended superstrings. As a side result, we find a twisted (N+2)
superconformal algebra realized in the N-extended string.Comment: 9 pages, LaTex, NBI-HE-94-2
Quantum theories of (p,q)-forms
We describe quantum theories for massless (p,q)-forms living on Kaehler
spaces. In particular we consider four different types of quantum theories: two
types involve gauge symmetries and two types are simpler theories without gauge
invariances. The latter can be seen as building blocks of the former. Their
equations of motion can be obtained in a natural way by first-quantizing a
spinning particle with a U(2)-extended supersymmetry on the worldline. The
particle system contains four supersymmetric charges, represented quantum
mechanically by the Dolbeault operators and their hermitian conjugates. After
studying how the (p,q)-form field theories emerge from the particle system, we
investigate their one loop effective actions, identify corresponding heat
kernel coefficients, and derive exact duality relations. The dualities are seen
to include mismatches related to topological indices and analytic torsions,
which are computed as Tr(-1)^F and Tr[(-1)^F F] in the first quantized
supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model for a suitable fermion number operator F.Comment: 44 pages, 2 figures, a reference adde
