Empowering Rural Citizen Journalism Via Web 2.0 Technologies
Once acquainted with the modern information and communication tools made available with the advent of the Internet, five Brazilian rural communities participating in a pilot project to develop a self-sustaining telecenter model, engaged in citizen journalism using inexpensive digital video cameras. Community members used Web 2.0 collaborative tools to post short videos on the telecenter portal. The 95 video blogs published between September 2006 and May 2008 recorded various aspects of community life, including religious celebrations, oral history arts and crafts traditions, folklore, and envirnmental concerns. This study evaluates the impact of video blogging in these communities
Honey volatiles as a fingerprint for botanical origin: a review on their occurrence on monofloral honeys
Honeys have specific organoleptic characteristics, with nutritional and health benefits, being highly appreciated by consumers, not only in food but also in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Honey composition varies between regions according to the surrounding flora, enabling its characterization by source or type. Monofloral honeys may reach higher market values than multifloral ones. Honey's aroma is very specific, resulting from the combination of volatile compounds present in low concentrations. The authentication of honey's complex matrix, according to its botanical and/or geographical origin, represents a challenge nowadays, due to the different sorts of adulteration that may occur, leading to the search for reliable marker compounds for the different monofloral honeys. The existing information on the volatiles of monofloral honeys is scarce and disperse. In this review, twenty monofloral honeys and honeydews, from acacia, buckwheat, chestnut, clover, cotton, dandelion, eucalyptus, fir tree, heather, lavender, lime tree, orange, pine, rape, raspberry, rhododendron, rosemary, strawberry tree, sunflower and thyme, were selected for volatile comparison purposes. Taking into consideration the country of origin, the technique of isolation and analysis, the five main volatiles from each of the honeys are compared. Whereas some compounds were found in several types of monofloral honey, and thus not considered good volatile markers, some monofloral honeys revealed characteristic volatile compounds independently of their provenance.Funding: SFRH/BD/117013/2016, UID/AGR/00690/2019,

Late Bronze Age metallic depositions in the AssureiraValley. The case study of Moinhos de Golas site (Solveira, Montalegre, Northern Portugal)
This work aims to publish a set of metal findings attributed to Bronze Age, and found in association with ceramic and lithic fragments. These were found in the Moinhos de Golas site, Solveira parish, in the Montale-gre council.
This set consists of metallic weapons, ornaments, tools, and some objects that might be related to metallurgical processes, among other objects difficult to classify. Preliminary elemental analysis made on selected artefacts point out that most objects were produced in a binary bronze alloy.
This set of artefacts, given their finding circumstances, should not be regarded as a closed hoard.Este trabalho foi desenvolvido no âmbito dos projetos Metalurgia Primitiva no Território Português – EARLYMETAL (PTDC/HIST-ARQ/110442/2008) e Espaços Naturais, Arquiteturas, Arte rupestre e Deposições na Pré-história Recente da Fachada Ocidental do Centro e Norte Português: das Ações aos Significados - ENARDAS (PTDC/HISARQ/112983/2009), financiado pelo Programa Operacional Temático Factores de Competitividade (COMPETE) e comparticipados pelo Fundo Comunitário Europeu FEDER. Supporting direct care workers in dementia care: effects of a psycho-educational intervention
YesAn experimental study using a pre-posttest control group design was conducted to assess the effects of a person-centred care based psycho-educational intervention on direct care workers’ stress, burnout and job satisfaction. The intervention aimed to develop person-centred care competences and tools for stress management. Four aged care facilities were randomly assigned to a psycho-educational or an education-only intervention (control). Data were collected from fifty-six direct care workers (female, mean age 44.72±9.02) through measurements of burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory), job satisfaction (Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire-short form) and stress (Perceived Stress Scale) and focus-group interviews. Results showed significant positive effects in emotional exhaustion (p=0.029) and positive but no significant effects in stress and job satisfaction. According to qualitative data, the experimental group perceived enhanced group cohesion, emotional management and self-care awareness. Psycho-educational interventions may contribute to reduce direct care workers’ burnout. Further work is needed to determine the extent of its benefits.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technolog

Person-centredness in direct care workers caring for residents with dementia: effects of a psycho-educational intervention
YesThis study assessed the effects of a psycho-educational intervention on direct care workers' person-centredness during morning care to residents with dementia. A controlled pretest–posttest study was conducted in four aged-care facilities with 56 direct care workers (female, mean age 44.72 ± 9.02). Two experimental facilities received a psycho-educational intervention comprising person-centred care competences and stress management skills; control facilities received an education-only intervention, without stress support. In total, 112 video-recorded morning care sessions were coded using the Global Behaviour Scale. Both groups reported significantly higher scores on eight of 11 items of the Global Behaviour Scale and on the Global Behaviour Scale total score at posttest (F=10.59; p=0.02). Global Behaviour Scale total score improvements were higher for the experimental group, with values close to significance (F=3.90; p=0.054). The findings suggest that a psycho-educational intervention may increase care workers' person-centredness. Further research is needed to explore the long-term sustainability and extent of its benefits on workers and residents.Foundation for Science and Technolog
Anxiety, depression, traumatic stress and quality of life in colorectal cancer after different treatments: A study with Portuguese patients and their partners
Purpose: This study examines the impact of different modes of treatment on depression, anxiety, traumatic
stress and quality of life in colorectal cancer patients and their partners.
Methods: The sample was comprised of 114 oncology patients and 67 partners. All patients were diagnosed
with colorectal cancer. Participants were recruited from an Oncology Hospital in the North of
Portugal and had been submitted to three modes of treatment: surgery, surgery plus chemotherapy or
surgery followed by radiotherapy.
Results: The results showed that patients who received only surgery, as treatment, had lower levels of
depression, anxiety and traumatic stress symptoms when compared with patients who received surgery
and chemotherapy or surgery plus radiotherapy. Partners of surgical patients presented lower levels of
state anxiety and traumatic stress symptoms when compared with the other two groups. Patients with
more depression had partners also more depressed. No relationship was found between anxiety and
traumatic stress symptoms in patients and partners. Patients who received a diagnosis longer than 12
months had more traumatic stress, intrusion and hypervigilance. Patients with illness recurrence showed
more traumatic symptoms. Anxiety and depression were the main predictors of patient’s quality of life.
Traumatic stress was a predictor of symptom distress - pain/bowel pattern.
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of providing psychological interventions for cancer
patients and their partners. Chemotherapy patients and those diagnosed over a year, as well as their
partners, are more at risk
Effects of a psycho-educational intervention on direct care workers’ communicative behaviours with residents with dementia
YesThis study assessed the effects of a person-centred care based psycho-educational intervention on direct care workers’ communicative behaviours with people with dementia living in aged care facilities. An experimental study with a pre-posttest control group design was conducted in four aged care facilities. Two experimental facilities received an eight-weekly psycho-educational intervention aiming to develop workers’ knowledge about dementia, person-centred care competences and tools for stress management; control facilities received an education-only, with no support to deal with stress. A total of 332 morning care sessions, involving fifty-six direct care workers (female, mean age 44.72±9.02), were video-recorded before and two weeks after the intervention The frequency and duration of a list of verbal and non-verbal communicative behaviours were analysed. Within the experimental group there was a positive change from pre to post-test on the frequency of all workers’ communicative behaviours. Significant treatment effects in favour of the experimental group were obtained for the frequency of inform (p<0.01, ƞ2partial=0.09) and laugh (p<0.01, ƞ2 partial=0.18). Differences between groups emerged mainly in relation to non-verbal communicative behaviours. The findings suggest that a person-centred care based psycho-educational intervention can positively affect the direct care workers’ communicative behaviours with residents with dementia. Further research is required to determine the extent of the benefits of this approach.Foundation for Science and Technolog
Towards Understanding Political Interactions on Instagram
Online Social Networks (OSNs) allow personalities and companies to
communicate directly with the public, bypassing filters of traditional medias.
As people rely on OSNs to stay up-to-date, the political debate has moved
online too. We witness the sudden explosion of harsh political debates and the
dissemination of rumours in OSNs. Identifying such behaviour requires a deep
understanding on how people interact via OSNs during political debates. We
present a preliminary study of interactions in a popular OSN, namely Instagram.
We take Italy as a case study in the period before the 2019 European Elections.
We observe the activity of top Italian Instagram profiles in different
categories: politics, music, sport and show. We record their posts for more
than two months, tracking "likes" and comments from users. Results suggest that
profiles of politicians attract markedly different interactions than other
categories. People tend to comment more, with longer comments, debating for
longer time, with a large number of replies, most of which are not explicitly
solicited. Moreover, comments tend to come from a small group of very active
users. Finally, we witness substantial differences when comparing profiles of
different parties.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure
