The following essay takes as its starting point the observation that colonial/racist imagery, sounds, figures and metaphors can be found in many 1950s West-German films. Referring to the Freudian notion of screen memories, which can be understood as memories of a past that were never present, the essay asks how these filmic actualizations of africanist tropes established a vision of an unburdened past. By looking at three films the essay shows that actualizations of africanist – racist – imagery are key; not only for the transcription of the Nazi as well as the colonial past, but also for establishing a memory that allows for the construction of a self-image as re-covered and therefore no longer racist

"Sprechen = Leben" : queere Zeitpolitiken und eine Ästhetik des Präsentischen in "120 BPM"

Gegen das tödliche Schweigen und die Einsamkeit setzt Robin Campillo in seinem Film "120 BPM" das gemeinsame Sprechen, die Versammlung. Basierend auf Campillos Erinnerungen an die politische Arbeit mit ACT UP Paris in den frühen 1990er Jahren rückt der Film die wöchentlichen Versammlungen der Gruppe in den Fokus. Ausgehend von diesen werden die queeren Zeitpolitiken des Films herausgearbeitet und gezeigt, dass der Film die Kämpfe nicht einfach als vergangene zeigt; vielmehr etabliert er eine Ästhetik des Präsentischen, die die Verbindungen von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit als performative Vergegenwärtigungen und potentielle Aktivierungen betont

‘Actions of the Eyes of the Fleeing’? Reflections on the In/Visibility of Harraga Videos

Against the backdrop of the media practices of the ‘summer of migration’ in 2015, this article asks if and how cell phone videos recorded by migrants and refugees and circulated via social media channels have not only the capability to change and extend modes of representation. It analyses harraga videos — short cell phone clips of the clandestine passage across the Mediterranean, uploaded on YouTube — by focusing on the act of capture. With reference to Helen Grace and Rey Chow, the essay argues that despite the relative invisibility of the videos, they are not just simple documents, but rather constitute the present of the harraga, and thereby form (local) publics. In this light, they can be understood as a political (media) practice, which intervenes in the visibilities and visualizations of the necropolitical European border regime

Performative Shifts in the Field of Gender and Media

In der Buchfassung ihrer Dissertation untersucht die Medienwissenschaftlerin Andrea Seier die Anschlussfähigkeit der Butlerschen Konzeption von Performativität an die Medienwissenschaft. Damit verfolgt sie ein doppeltes Anliegen: Es geht ihr zum einen darum, mit der Fokussierung auf die performative Perspektive dem Ereignischarakter von Medien Rechnung zu tragen, und zum anderen darum, das Verhältnis von Gender und Medien sowohl erkenntnistheoretisch als auch methodisch zu präzisieren. Darin liegt der große Gewinn dieser Arbeit für eine transdiziplinäre Forschung zwischen Gender Studies und Medienwissenschaft.In the book version of her dissertation, the media scholar Andrea Seier examines the compatibility of Butler’s concept of performativity in connection with media studies. She thus follows a two-fold interest: She intends to accommodate the event-character of the media through her focus on the performative perspective as well as to specify the relationship between gender and media, both epistemologically and theoretically
