    The Revival of Galactic Cosmic Ray Nucleosynthesis?

    Because of the roughly linear correlation between Be/H and Fe/H in low metallicity halo stars, it has been argued that a ``primary'' component in the nucleosynthesis of Be must be present in addition to the ``secondary'' component from standard Galactic cosmic ray nucleosynthesis. In this paper we critically re-evaluate the evidence for the primary versus secondary character of Li, Be, and B evolution, analyzing both in the observations and in Galactic chemical evolution models. While it appears that [Be/H] versus [Fe/H] has a logarithmic slope near 1, it is rather the Be-O trend that directly arises from the physics of spallation production. Using new abundances for oxygen in halo stars based on UV OH lines, we find that the Be-O slope has a large uncertainty due to systematic effects, rendering it difficult to distinguish from the data between the secondary slope of 2 and the primary slope of 1. The possible difference between the Be-Fe and Be-O slopes is a consequence of the variation in O/Fe versus Fe: recent data suggests a negative slope rather than zero (i.e., Fe \propto O) as is often assumed. In addition to a phenomenological analysis of Be and B evolution, we have also examined the predicted LiBeB, O, and Fe trends in Galactic chemical evolution models which include outflow. Based on our results, it is possible that a good fit to the LiBeB evolution requires only traditional the Galactic cosmic ray spallation, and the (primary) neutrino-process contribution to B11. We thus suggest that these two processes might be sufficient to explain Li6, Be, and B evolution in the Galaxy, without the need for an additional primary source of Be and B.Comment: 25 pages, latex, 8 ps figures, figure 1 correcte

    Constraining the variation of the coupling constants with big bang nucleosynthesis

    We consider the possibility of the coupling constants of the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1)SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1) gauge interactions at the time of big bang nucleosynthesis having taken different values from what we measure at present, and investigate the allowed difference requiring the shift in the coupling constants not violate the successful calculation of the primordial abundances of the light elements. We vary gauge couplings and Yukawa couplings (fermion masses) using a model in which their relative variations are governed by a single scalar field, dilaton, as found in string theory. The results include a limit on the fine structure constant 6.0×104<ΔαEM/αEM<1.5×104-6.0\times10^{-4}<\Delta\alpha_{EM}/\alpha_{EM}<1.5\times10^{-4}, which is two orders stricter than the limit obtained by considering the variation of αEM\alpha_{EM} alone.Comment: 7 page

    Lo-fi prototyping to design interactive-tabletop applications for children

    Interactive tabletops are an exiting new platform for supporting children's collaboration. With design guidelines and standardized interaction principles still immature, there is a considerable need for iterative prototyping to define the task and interface. Lo-fi prototypes-using cardboard, paper, etc.- are easy to develop, flexible to adjust during design sessions, and intuitive for users to manipulate. Using them can be a valuable step in designing tabletop applications. In this paper, we detail the design process of two tabletop applications, concentrating on the role of lo-fi prototyping. TransTime is a pattern game for 5-6 year olds to engage how time progresses. OurSpace is a design tool for 7-9 year olds to arrange desks and assign seats for students in their classroom. By comparing the experiences, we arrive at a better understanding of the benefits, challenges, and limits of using lo-fi prototypes to design interactive-tabletop applications for children

    Gene Networks Activated by Specific Patterns of Action Potentials in Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurons

    Gene regulatory networks underlie the long-term changes in cell specification, growth of synaptic connections, and adaptation that occur throughout neonatal and postnatal life. Here we show that the transcriptional response in neurons is exquisitely sensitive to the temporal nature of action potential firing patterns. Neurons were electrically stimulated with the same number of action potentials, but with different inter-burst intervals. We found that these subtle alterations in the timing of action potential firing differentially regulates hundreds of genes, across many functional categories, through the activation or repression of distinct transcriptional networks. Our results demonstrate that the transcriptional response in neurons to environmental stimuli, coded in the pattern of action potential firing, can be very sensitive to the temporal nature of action potential delivery rather than the intensity of stimulation or the total number of action potentials delivered. These data identify temporal kinetics of action potential firing as critical components regulating intracellular signalling pathways and gene expression in neurons to extracellular cues during early development and throughout life

    Heat treatment: A viable methyl bromide alternative for managing stored-product insects in food-processing facilities

    Heat treatment involves raising and maintaining temperatures of grain storage structures, warehouses, and food-processing facilities between 50 to 60°C to manage stored-product insect species. The duration of heat treatment is application-specific and may vary from 6 h for an empty storage facility to 24 h for an entire food-processing facility. Laboratory and commercial trials with high temperatures during the last decade, especially with forced air gas heaters, have resulted in a wealth of information on (1) understanding responses of insect species and life stages to heat, (2) heat distribution within a treated area, and (3) techniques necessary for gauging effectiveness of commercial heat treatments. Insect responses vary with the temperature, among species, and within a species among life stages.
