We explore extensions of inelastic Dark Matter and Magnetic inelastic Dark
Matter where the WIMP can scatter to a tower of heavier states. We assume a
WIMP mass GeV and a constant splitting between
successive states keV. For the
spin-independent scattering scenario we find that the direct experiments CDMS
and XENON strongly constrain most of the DAMA/LIBRA preferred parameter space,
while for WIMPs that interact with nuclei via their magnetic moment a region of
parameter space corresponding to GeV and keV

Direct Visualization of Protease Action on Collagen Triple Helical Structure
Enzymatic processing of extracellular matrix (ECM) macromolecules by matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) is crucial in mediating physiological and pathological cell processes. However, the molecular mechanisms leading to effective physiological enzyme-ECM interactions remain elusive. Only scant information is available on the mode by which matrix proteases degrade ECM substrates. An example is the enzymatic degradation of triple helical collagen II fragments, generated by the collagenase MMP-8 cleavage, during the course of acute inflammatory conditions by gelatinase B/MMP-9. As is the case for many other matrix proteases, it is not clear how MMP-9 recognizes, binds and digests collagen in this important physiological process. We used single molecule imaging to directly visualize this protease during its interaction with collagen fragments. We show that the initial binding is mediated by the diffusion of the protease along the ordered helix on the collagen ¾ fragment, with preferential binding of the collagen tail. As the reaction progressed and prior to collagen degradation, gelatin-like morphologies resulting from the denaturation of the triple helical collagen were observed. Remarkably, this activity was independent of enzyme proteolysis and was accompanied by significant conformational changes of the working protease. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 3 pneumonia in a patient with low-grade 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Nosocomial legionellosis has generally been described in immunodepressed patients, but <it>Legionella pneumophila </it>serogroup 3 has rarely been identified as the causative agent.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of nosocomial <it>L. pneumophila </it>serogroup 3 pneumonia in a 70-year-old Caucasian man with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Diagnosis was carried out by culture and real-time polymerase chain reaction of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The results of a urinary antigen test were negative. A hospital environmental investigation revealed that the hospital water system was highly colonized by <it>L. pneumophila </it>serogroups 3, 4, and 8. The hospital team involved in the prevention of infections was informed, long-term control measures to reduce the environmental bacterial load were adopted, and clinical monitoring of legionellosis occurrence in high-risk patients was performed. No further cases of <it>Legionella </it>pneumonia have been observed so far.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this report, we describe a case of legionellosis caused by <it>L. pneumophila </it>serogroup 3, which is not usually a causative agent of nosocomial infection. Our research confirms the importance of carrying out cultures of respiratory secretions to diagnose legionellosis and highlights the limited value of the urinary antigen test for hospital infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. It also indicates that, to reduce the bacterial load and prevent nosocomial legionellosis, appropriate control measures should be implemented with systematic monitoring of hospital water systems.</p
High tumour contamination of leukaphereses in patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung: a comparison of immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR
In small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) tumour cell contamination of leukaphereses is unknown. The present study was performed to define appropriate markers for reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), then to assess the contamination rate of leukaphereses and corresponding bone marrow samples. Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and RT-PCR methods were also compared. Among the 33 patients included, analyses were performed in 16 who had multiple leukaphereses and 17 who had only bone marrow. Leukapheresis products and bone marrow were analysed by ICC using several specific monoclonal antibodies against neural-cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM), epithelial glycoprotein (EGP-40) and cytokeratins (CK). Samples were also analyzed by RT-PCR for expression for N-CAM, synaptophysin, neuron-specific enolase, chromogranin, cytokeratin-18/-19, CEA, EGP-40, apomucin type 1 (MUC-1) and human endothelial cell-specific molecule (ESM-1). Using ICC staining, contaminating tumour cells were detected in 34% of leukaphereses (27% in patients with limited disease and 43% in those with extensive disease). N-CAM was the most reliable marker for detection of contamination. For RT-PCR, CK-19 and CEA were the only appropriate markers. Positive signal rate in leukaphereses increased to 78% (89% for patients with limited disease and 67% for extensive disease). In bone marrow, both techniques were in agreement whereas in leukaphereses, RT-PCR was better than ICC. A high rate of tumour cell contamination was demonstrated not only in bone marrow but also in leukaphereses from SCLC patients. Observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering
The coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos off nuclei has eluded detection
for four decades, even though its predicted cross-section is the largest by far
of all low-energy neutrino couplings. This mode of interaction provides new
opportunities to study neutrino properties, and leads to a miniaturization of
detector size, with potential technological applications. We observe this
process at a 6.7-sigma confidence level, using a low-background, 14.6-kg
CsI[Na] scintillator exposed to the neutrino emissions from the Spallation
Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Characteristic
signatures in energy and time, predicted by the Standard Model for this
process, are observed in high signal-to-background conditions. Improved
constraints on non-standard neutrino interactions with quarks are derived from
this initial dataset
Diffuse Gamma Rays: Galactic and Extragalactic Diffuse Emission
"Diffuse" gamma rays consist of several components: truly diffuse emission
from the interstellar medium, the extragalactic background, whose origin is not
firmly established yet, and the contribution from unresolved and faint Galactic
point sources. One approach to unravel these components is to study the diffuse
emission from the interstellar medium, which traces the interactions of high
energy particles with interstellar gas and radiation fields. Because of its
origin such emission is potentially able to reveal much about the sources and
propagation of cosmic rays. The extragalactic background, if reliably
determined, can be used in cosmological and blazar studies. Studying the
derived "average" spectrum of faint Galactic sources may be able to give a clue

Higher-order multipole amplitudes in charmonium radiative transitions
Using 24 million decays in CLEO-c, we have searched
for higher multipole admixtures in electric-dipole-dominated radiative
transitions in charmonia. We find good agreement between our data and
theoretical predictions for magnetic quadrupole (M2) amplitudes in the
transitions and ,
in striking contrast to some previous measurements. Let and

performing unbinned maximum likelihood fits to full five-parameter angular

Effective Dark Matter Model: Relic density, CDMS II, Fermi LAT and LHC
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search recently announced the observation of two
signal events with a 77% confidence level. Although statistically inconclusive,
it is nevertheless suggestive. In this work we present a model-independent
analysis on the implication of a positive signal in dark matter scattering off
nuclei. Assuming the interaction between (scalar, fermion or vector) dark
matter and the standard model induced by unknown new physics at the scale
, we examine various dimension-6 tree-level induced operators and
constrain them using the current experimental data, e.g. the WMAP data of the
relic abundance, CDMS II direct detection of the spin-independent scattering,
and indirect detection data (Fermi LAT cosmic gamma-ray), etc. Finally, the LHC
reach is also explored
Search for D0 to p e- and D0 to pbar e+
Using data recorded by CLEO-c detector at CESR, we search for simultaneous
baryon and lepton number violating decays of the D^0 meson, specifically, D^0
--> p-bar e^+, D^0-bar --> p-bar e^+, D^0 --> p e^- and D^0-bar --> p e^-. We
set the following branching fraction upper limits: D^0 --> p-bar e^+ (D^0-bar
--> p-bar e^+) p e^- (D^0-bar --> p e^-) < 1.2 *
