A Representation and Algorithm for Exact Computation of Cascaded Polygon Intersections with Fixed Storage Requirements

    Get PDF
Given a collection of polygons (or a collection of sets of polygons) with vertex points specified to some fixed-point precision, a technique is presented for accurately representing the intersection points formed by elements in the collection. In particular, we recognize that in 2D, the result of a series of intersections between polygons must be composed of line segments that are part of the line segments making up the original polygons. While our techniques greatly improve the accuracy of floating point representations for intersection points, we also provide algorithms based on rational arithmetic that compute these intersection points exactly. The storage required to represent an intersection vertex is slightly greater than four times the number of bits in the input resolution. Furthermore, no intermediate quantity requires resolution slightly greater than four times the resolution resolution of input vertex values, so implementation on existing computers at practical resolution can easily be done. Cascaded intersection operations do not require ever greater amounts of storage for vertex points, as would normally be required by a rational arithmetic approach. We also prove that a similar approach is not possible for any reasonable set of rotations

Noninflammatory Changes of Microglia Are Sufficient to Cause Epilepsy.

Microglia are well known to play a critical role in maintaining brain homeostasis. However, their role in epileptogenesis has yet to be determined. Here, we demonstrate that elevated mTOR signaling in mouse microglia leads to phenotypic changes, including an amoeboid-like morphology, increased proliferation, and robust phagocytosis activity, but without a significant induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. We further provide evidence that these noninflammatory changes in microglia disrupt homeostasis of the CNS, leading to reduced synapse density, marked microglial infiltration into hippocampal pyramidal layers, moderate neuronal degeneration, and massive proliferation of astrocytes. Moreover, the mice thus affected develop severe early-onset spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRSs). Therefore, we have revealed an epileptogenic mechanism that is independent of the microglial inflammatory response. Our data suggest that microglia could be an opportune target for epilepsy prevention

Prescribing the behaviour of geodesics in negative curvature

Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling times around a closed geodesic in a closed such M. We also prove that the Hall ray phenomenon described by Hall in special arithmetic situations and by Schmidt-Sheingorn for hyperbolic surfaces is in fact only a negative curvature property.Comment: 89 page

Distributed Reconnaissance Deception using Software-Defined Networking in a Dynamic Network Environment

    Get PDF
This research outlines the design and implementation of a DRDS, which is a RDS distributed across multiple controllers that is capable of deploying reconnaissance deception across multiple switches to mitigate network enumeration by a compromised host. This research outlines the design and development of the DRDS as well as tests its functional abilities and routing performance when compared to a two other network routing solutions: a legacy network solution and centralized ONOS controller scheme deploying layer 2 forwarding. The functional tests proved the system can properly route traffic across 100% of the tested scenarios carrying traffic that includes IP, ARP, and ICMP messages. Furthermore, the system mitigates network enumeration across every tested case. When compared to the legacy network solution, the DRDS performed as well or better in 89.6% of tested network communication scenarios. Similarly, when tested against the centralized ONOS controller scheme, the system performed as well or better in 90% of tested network communication scenarios

The Perceptions and Experiences of General Education Teachers Toward Cotaught Inclusion Classes

    Get PDF
This project study addressed the low rate of general education teachers volunteering to coteach inclusion classes at a large urban high school in southeastern Georgia. This low volunteer rate caused administrators at this school to assign general education teachers, who did not opt in, to coteach inclusion classes. Teachers\u27 efficacy was negatively impacted when they were required to teach classes that they did not volunteer to teach. The model of cooperative teaching advanced by Bauwens, Hourcade, and Friend\u27s work served as the conceptual framework for this intrinsic case study. The purpose of the study was to examine how general education teachers described coteaching inclusion classes, and how they demonstrated effectiveness of cotaught classes. Qualitative data consisted of personal interviews with and classroom observations of 10 general education teachers, as well as lesson plans received from 2 of the participants. The typological analysis revealed that general education teachers perceived a need for training regarding coteaching, increased use of coteaching models in the classroom, development of coteaching partnerships, and administrative support. Based on the results of this study, a coteaching professional development was created that focuses on coteaching methods, strategies, and models for general education teachers involved in coteaching. The recommended professional development may contribute to positive social change by improving teachers\u27 coteaching performance and increasing teachers\u27 efficacy to impact the academic environment of students in cotaught inclusion classes

    Commissioning of current transformers

Current transformers are the link between the primary and the secondary system and are therefore essential components of the electrical energy system. Their commissioning is an important phase of evaluating their proper functionality. Nowadays, is continuously decreasing. Moreover, it should be considered how the transformers and the protection system can be adequately tested within a reasonable timeframe. This paper discusses how a test plan for commissioning or refurbishing a substation might look
