    The Construction of Identity in John Banville’s The Book of Evidence

    In the present paper, I propose to discuss how I read The Book of Evidence and, echoing Robert Scholes’s words, how I inscribe it into the textuality of my life. Scholes actually says that “...each text can only be read by connecting it to the unfinished work of textuality...” (6) that each person’s reading represents. Therefore, as I read The Book of Evidence, it immediately reminded me of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and Capote’s In Cold Blood. At the moment I read these novels, I thought my reading of them complete and closed. Dostoyevsky’s narrative had opened my eyes to the deep psychological anguish of a young man who feels trapped in his social plight and commits a murder only to confirm the famous cliché that crime does not pay and the path of goodness should always be chosen. I remember turning the pages expecting to find some relief after so much despair. Many years later I dared read Capote’s novel. The scene of the merciless massacre of the Clutter family remained with me after a long time as well as the sordid and marginal existence of the murderers and their hopeless path to death. When I took up The Book of Evidence I was ready for the same kind of reading experience. But, in spite of its deep intertextuality with Dostoyevsky’s novel, the unexpected tone of the narration suggested that I should generate a substantially different reading strategy in order to make sense of it.In the present paper, I propose to discuss how I read The Book of Evidence and, echoing Robert Scholes’s words, how I inscribe it into the textuality of my life.     No momento presente quando as novas tecnologias estão mediando o processo de letramento se faz importante discutir a efetividade e complexidade da interação implícita na Educação a Distância (EaD) para a inclusão social em um país  geograficamente vasto e culturalmente  heterogêneo como o Brasil. Entendemos que apesar de problemas como um apropriado sistema de letramento digital, acesso adequado à comunicação tecnológica, como assim também a possibilidade de enfrentar os custos financeiros, a EaD pode ainda ser efetiva no Brasil porque alcança lugares de difícil acesso, afastados dos centros universitários e assim coloca em contato as grandes metrópoles com áreas rurais ao tempo que contribui para encurtar distâncias de classe, gênero e diferenças étnicas e raciais entre os brasileiros que pertencem a diferentes âmbitos da nação

    The aim of this paper is to make a reading of the novel The Master by Colm Tóibín, whose fictional time covers four decisive years in the life of Henry James, from 1895 to 1899. I will argue that, for once, it is James who is being watched from the perspective of a high window, the leit motif of the novel, only that instead of following James’ gaze on the outside world, Tóibín enters the Master’s consciousness. Hence, through the use of a central intelligence (The Master’s acclaimed use of point of view) Tóibín turns James into the main character of his fiction in order to recreate those themes that most haunted him in his middle years: his frustrating experience in the theater with his play Guy Domville; the death of his parents and his sister, Alice; the suicide of his friend Constance Woolson Fenimore; his homosexuality; his not having participated in the American Civil War; being from a family of  intellectuals, his having preferred fiction over history and philosophy

    O presente artigo traz uma leitura do relato de viagem Goa and the Blue Mountains or Six Months of Sick Leave (1851) de Sir Rirchard F. Burton discutindo como o autor constrói a si mesmo, enquanto narrador, assim como a sua textualização do Oriente colonial, neste caso a Índia, em um enredo reconhecível para o seu público europeu. Questões de forma e conteúdo serão consideradas, já que as estratégias ficcionais utilizadas revelam a construção ideológica do colonizador.This paper aims at a reading of Sir Richard Francis Burton's Goa and the Blue Mountains or Six Months of Sick Leave (1851) considering how from an imperial perspective, he both constructs himself as narrator in his text and also semioticizes the Orient, in this particular case India, in a way that is meaningful to his audience back home. We will discuss not only the tale being told but also the way it is emplotted since we understand that the fictive strategies employed postulate the ideological construction of the colonizer

    Nosso artigo tem como intuito mostrar a centralidade da literatura das mulheres do Raj durante a presença do império britânico no subcontinente indiano. Com esse propósito analisaremos três contos, escritos entre o fim do século XIX e início do século XX, para mostrar como essas escritoras vão além dos limites da ficção do pitoresco, o local epistmológico a que elas são relegadas pelo discurso imperial, para expressar a sua visão da história colonial.In this article we propose to discuss the relevance of the literature written by the women of the Raj during the time of the English Empire on the Indian subcontinent. Therefore we will interpret three short stories written at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century to show how these women writers go beyond the 'literature of the pictureseque', the epistemological locus in which they are imprisoned by imperial discourse, in order to express their own views on colonial history

    Esse artigo traz uma leitura do ciclo de contos Monção (1963) da escritora goesa Vimala Devi. Esse gênero literário permite ao autor dar visibilidade ao que Deleuze e Guattari (1975) chamam de literaturas menores: literaturas de comunidades minoritárias, mas escritas em línguas canônicas, neste caso a literatura de Goa em língua portuguesa. Logo, nos passos de Homi Bhabha (1994) os contos desta antologia são lidos em termos do conceito de momentos de estranhamento quando, de uma perspectiva crítica a autora desconstrói  a ideia de Goa ser um local sossegado e problematiza questões sociais que mantiveram sua comunidade estagnada por tanto tempo

    Monsoon (2019) is an English translation of the short story book Monção (1963/2003) by the Goan Portuguese-speaking author, Vimala Devi, by the professor of Portuguese language literature Paul Melo e Castro (University of Glasgow). The book features an introduction written by Dr. Jason Keith Fernandes, a note on the translation by Melo e Castro and a glossary of terms in Concani, the official language of Goa, and in Portuguese, translated into English. For the literary value of the work and the quality of the translation, Monsoon appeared on The New York Times' 2019 Globetrotter List
