Loss of Developmental Diapause as Prerequisite for Social Evolution in Bees
Diapause is a physiological arrest of development ahead of adverse environmental conditions and is a critical phase of the life cycle of many insects. In bees, diapause has been reported in species from all seven taxonomic families. However, they exhibit a variety of diapause strategies. These different strategies are of particular interest since shifts in the phase of the insect life cycle in which diapause occurs have been hypothesized to promote the evolution of sociality. Here we provide a comprehensive evaluation of this hypothesis with phylogenetic analysis and ancestral state reconstruction (ASR) of the ecological and evolutionary factors associated with diapause phase. We find that social lifestyle, latitude and voltinism are significant predictors of the life stage in which diapause occurs. ASR revealed that the most recent common ancestor of all bees likely exhibited developmental diapause and shifts to adult, reproductive, or no diapause have occurred in the ancestors of lineages in which social behaviour has evolved. These results provide fresh insight regarding the role of diapause as a prerequisite for the evolution of sociality in bees
Excesso de peso e obesidade abdominal em mulheres atendidas em Unidade da Estratégia Saúde da FamÃlia
Investigou-se a prevalência de excesso de peso e obesidade abdominal e variáveis associadas em mulheres. Estudo transversal com 298 mulheres (20-59 anos), usuárias de uma unidade da Estratégia Saúde da FamÃlia, em São Paulo-SP. Considerou-se o excesso de peso: Ãndice de massa corporal>25kg/m²; a obesidade abdominal: circunferência da cintura 0,80m ou razão cintura-quadril>0,85. Realizou-se análise de regressão logÃstica. O excesso de peso afetou 56% das mulheres, sendo 37% sobrepeso e 19% obesidade, e associou-se com a idade, renda familiar, tabagismo e hipertensão. 59% tinham obesidade abdominal associada à idade e hipertensão. Observou-sea elevada prevalência de excesso de peso e obesidade abdominal em mulheres, reforçando a importância da avaliação de circunferência da cintura e/ou razão cintura-quadril no exame fÃsico, além do Ãndice de massa corporal, auxiliadores da predição de risco. Evidencia-se a necessidade de intervenções, junto à comunidade, que promovam a diminuição do excesso de peso e da obesidade abdominal
ANTIFUNGAL POTENTIAL OF PLANT SPECIES FROM BRAZILIAN CAATINGA AGAINST DERMATOPHYTES
Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex, or Trichophyton spp. are the main etiologic agents of dermatophytosis, whose treatment is limited by the high cost of antifungal treatments, their various side effects, and the emergence of resistance amongst these species. This study evaluated the in vitro antidermatophytic activity of 23 crude extracts from nine plant species of semiarid vegetation (caatinga) found in Brazil. The extracts were tested at concentrations ranging from 1.95 to 1,000.0 mg/mL by broth microdilution assay against the reference strains T. rubrum ATCC 28189 and T. mentagrophytesATCC 11481, and 33 clinical isolates of dermatophytes. All plants showed a fungicidal effect against both fungal species, with MIC/MFC values of the active extracts ranging from 15.6 to 250.0 µg/mL. Selected extracts of Eugenia uniflora (AcE), Libidibia ferrea (AE), and Persea americana (AcE) also exhibited a fungicidal effect against all clinical isolates of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes complex. This is the first report of the antifungal activity of Schinus terebinthifolius, Piptadenia colubrina, Parapiptadenia rigida, Mimosa ophthalmocentra, and Persea americana against both dermatophyte species
Antimicrobial activity and bioactive compounds of portuguese wild edible mushrooms methanolic extracts
The antimicrobial properties of phenolic extracts of Portuguese wild edible mushroom species (Lactarius deliciosus,
Sarcodon imbricatus and Tricholoma portentosum)
against pathogens were investigated. The minimal inhibitory
concentrations (MICs) were evaluated for the entire mushroom,
the cap and the stipe, separately; the portion of the
mushroom used proved to be influenced in the results obtained,
which are directly correlated with the content of total
phenols and flavonoids in the extracts. The growth of Grampositive
bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis,) was well inhibited
by these mushrooms, while Escherichia coli (Gramnegative
bacteria) was resistant. The study on the antifungal
effect of these mushrooms revealed that Candida albicans
and Cryptococcus neoformans were differently inhibited for
the mushrooms used
Are isomeric alkenes used in species recognition among neo-tropical stingless bees (Melipona spp)
The majority of our understanding of the role of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) in recognition is based largely on temperate ant species and honey bees. The stingless bees remain relatively poorly studied, despite being the largest group of eusocial bees, comprising more than 400 species in some 60 genera. The Meliponini and Apini diverged between 80-130 Myr B.P. so the evolutionary trajectories that shaped the chemical communication systems in ants, honeybees and stingless bees may be very different. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to study if a unique species CHC signal existed in Neotropical stingless bees, as shown for many temperate species, and if so what compounds are involved. This was achieved by collecting CHC data from 24 colonies belonging to six species of Melipona from North-eastern Brazil and comparing this new data with all previously published CHC studies on Melipona. We found that each of the eleven Melipona species studied so far each produced a unique species CHC signal based around their alkene isomer production. A remarkable number of alkene isomers, up to 25 in M. asilvai, indicated the diversification of alkene positional isomers among the stingless bees. The only other group to have really diversified in alkene isomer production are the primitively eusocial Bumblebees (Bombus spp), which are the sister group of the stingless bees. Furthermore, among the eleven Neotropical Melipona species we could detect no effect of the environment on the proportion of alkane production as has been suggested for some other species
