    Low-wage employment in Portugal: Social dimension and recent evolution

    Low-wage employment is one of the main origins of poverty and social exclusion in Portugal, along with low pensions granted to elder citizens. In this paper our aim is to provide a first approach of the social dimension of low-wage employment in Portugal, analysing its incidence and profile among regions, sectors, professions, skill levels and gender. This decomposition analysis will stress the most important factors underlying the phenomenon. At a first stage we shall study wage structure and wage inequality evolution in the last decade. The incidence and evolution of low wages and minimum legal wages will be compared whith average wages, in order to evaluate the situation of the low payed vis a vis the other better paid workers. We proceed analysing low-wage decomposition by the criteria mentioned above, taken separately and in interaction, to identify the main determinants and the cumulative effects of these factors in the explanation and evolution of low wages. The main data set available is "Quadros de Pessoal" (Data base of worker characteristics provided by firms) from the MESS ( Employment and Social Security Ministry). In this study we will use directly this data base. Other statistical sources will also be used for complementary aspects. We must say that the data on these area of research are still insufficiently developed in Portugal, and that, in consequence, socio-economic knowledge on low-wage employment as a mechanism of social exclusion is still incipient. Low-wage are but one of the dimensions of social exclusion, closely related with poverty as insufficient economic resources, and is often associated with other dimensions of social exclusion in the labour market, such as unemployment vulnerability and job instability. The crucial role in this triad - low-pay, unemployment, job instability - is played by skill levels, which are particularly low in our country, as we?ll try to demonstrate. Social exclusion must however be analysed at the family unit. As long as income is concerned, wages are far the most important source, particularly for low income active families, and the ?low skills - low pay - low income? chain seems to be the major determinant of social exclusion.     Investigating an Ethical Approach to Genetically Modified Crops in Environmental Educational Processes

    Genetically modified (GM) crops gained attention in southern Africa in the context of broader debates about the struggle for food security and poverty alleviation to achieve sustainable development. The prospects of GM crops as a technological innovation have provoked numerous debates and environmental concern groups have challenged their use. Environmental educators’ concern for greater ethical practices regarding environmental issues can be applied to the subject of GM crops. This article focuses on the perceptions of environmental educators regarding the use of GM crops towards sustainable development. Interviews were conducted with a small group of environmental educators to gain some insight into their perceptions. The interviews reflected some contextual relevance of GM crops, understanding of the concepts ‘GM crops’ and ‘sustainable  development’ as well as four unique themes. These emphasise the plurality of the GM crops issue and the importance thereof in working towards an ethical approach in environmental educational processes

    DYNAMIC ASSESSMENT IN INCLUSIVE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW OF THE USABILITY, METHODS, AND CHALLENGES IN THE PAST DECADE

    Dynamic Assessment (DA) provides alternative strategies for assessing children in inclusive education but hasn’t been widely incorporated in teacher education as a tool for mediating learning in special education. This systematic literature review investigates empirical studies reported in the last decade to provide a comprehensive overview of the applications DA in inclusive elementary education, reviewing common methodologies and tools, challenges, and recommended solutions to develop DA. In the final analysis, 24 articles published between 2010- 2021 met the study’s inclusion criteria. Results indicate that DA is mainly used to identify students’ educational needs, predict students’ future performance and responsiveness to intervention, and assess academic development, but rarely to guide intervention, inform instruction, or develop individual educational planning. DA is mainly used by trained researchers and their assistants, instead of teachers, despite its relevance to educational processes. Challenges employing DA and recommendations for developing its practice are critically discussed.  Article visualizations

    Lorentz-violating contributions of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw model to the CMB anisotropy

    We study the finite temperature properties of the Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics for a purely spacelike background. Starting from the associated finite temperature partition function, a modified black body spectral distribution is obtained. We thus show that, if the CMB radiation is described by this model, the spectrum presents an anisotropic angular energy density distribution. We show, at leading order, that the Lorentz-breaking contributions for the Planck's radiation law and for the Stefan-Boltzmann's law are nonlinear in frequency and quadratic in temperature, respectively. Using our results, we set up bounds for the Lorentz-breaking parameter, and show that Lorentz violation in the context of the MCFJ model is unable to yield the known CMB anisotropy (of 1 part in 105)10^{5})

    The reliability of physical examination in diagnosing arterial injury in penetrating trauma to extremities: A first look at different anatomical regions and injury mechanisms

    Background. The accuracy of physical examination to exclude arterial injury in penetrating trauma to extremities has been well established. Objectives. To determine whether the accuracy of physical examination to exclude arterial injury is similar to that of a computed tomography arteriogram (CTA) for different anatomical regions and mechanisms of injury, and in patients with concomitant fractures compared with those without. Methods. A retrospective review was conducted on all patients who underwent CTA for penetrating injuries to an extremity between 1 June 2016 and 30 June 2017. The presence of arterial injuries was noted, and these were grouped into anatomical areas. Clinical notes were reviewed for the presence of hard signs of arterial injury at initial examination. Results. A total of 220 lower limb and 133 upper limb CTAs were included. The mean patient age was 28.9 years (range 11 - 68). The overall sensitivity of physical examination in detecting a CTA-confirmed arterial injury was 95.3% (95% confidence interval (CI) 88.4 - 98.7), with a specificity of 93.9% (95% CI 90.2 - 96.4). Physical examination of the thigh had the highest specificity of 96.4% (95% CI 91.8 - 98.8), followed by the lower leg at 94.4% (95% CI 81.3 - 99.3), the upper arm at 89.6% (95% CI 79.7 - 95.7) and the forearm at 77.8% (95% CI 40.0 - 97.2). For gunshot wounds the specificity was 96.1% (95% CI 92.4 - 98.3), while for stab wounds it was 86.8% (95% CI 74.7 - 94.5). Conclusions. This study agrees with current literature indicating that physical examination has high specificity in detecting arterial injury in the setting of penetrating trauma to an extremity. However, it shows that the specificity is not equal for all anatomical regions or mechanisms of injury

    Financial burden of orthopaedic gunshot-related injury management at a major trauma centre

    Background. Violence and injuries are a significant global public health concern, and have a substantial emotional, physical and economic impact on society. In South Africa (SA), the Western Cape Injury Mortality Profile shows that homicides increased from 38 deaths per 100 000 in 2010 to 52 deaths per 100 000 in 2016. This increase is directly related to an increase in firearm-related homicides, which doubled from 2010 to 2016. Previous research estimated the average cost per gunshot wound (GSW)-related orthopaedic patient at USD2 940. GSW-related patient numbers as well as treatment costs have escalated exponentially over the past few years.Objectives. To calculate the financial costs involved in managing gunshot-related orthopaedic injuries both surgically and non-surgically at a tertiary centre in SA.Methods. After ethics approval, a retrospective review of all GSW patients seen in the emergency unit at Tygerberg Hospital in 2017 was undertaken. Patient records yielded data on the following parameters: injury site and characteristics, imaging modalities, orthopaedic management, hospital admission and duration of hospitalisation, theatre episodes, orthopaedic implants and blood products administered. Cost analysis was performed using this information.Results. A total of 389 patients (360 male and 29 female), average age (range, standard deviation) 28 (3 - 69, 9.50) years, were treated during the study period. Patient records identified a total of 449 orthopaedic injuries. A total of 187 patients were admitted, with 175 requiring surgical fixation. The conservatively calculated cost of managing this patient group was ZAR10 227 503. The average management cost per patient was ZAR26 292, with an average of ZAR46 670 per case requiring surgical management and ZAR8 810 for non-surgical cases (the average USD-ZAR exchange rate in 2017 was USD1-ZAR13.30).Conclusions. The total cost of managing 389 patients with gunshot-related orthopaedic injuries at a tertiary hospital was ZAR10 227 503. Improved understanding of these costs will help the healthcare system better prioritise orthopaedic trauma funding and training and highlights the urgent need for cost-saving measures, specifically primary prevention initiatives
