Dissipation in planar resonant planetary systems
Close-in planetary systems detected by the Kepler mission present an excess
of periods ratio that are just slightly larger than some low order resonant
values. This feature occurs naturally when resonant couples undergo dissipation
that damps the eccentricities. However, the resonant angles appear to librate
at the end of the migration process, which is often believed to be an evidence
that the systems remain in resonance.
Here we provide an analytical model for the dissipation in resonant planetary
systems valid for low eccentricities. We confirm that dissipation accounts for
an excess of pairs that lie just aside from the nominal periods ratios, as
observed by the Kepler mission. In addition, by a global analysis of the phase
space of the problem, we demonstrate that these final pairs are non-resonant.
Indeed, the separatrices that exist in the resonant systems disappear with the
dissipation, and remains only a circulation of the orbits around a single
elliptical fixed point. Furthermore, the apparent libration of the resonant
angles can be explained using the classical secular averaging method. We show
that this artifact is only due to the severe damping of the amplitudes of the
eigenmodes in the secular motion.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, accepted to A&
Behavioural and physiological responses of rabbits
ArticleThe profitability of a rabbit farming system must consider the thermal environment
that the animal will be exposed during the productive period. The goal of this study was to
evaluate the physiological responses and behaviours of 26 New Zealand rabbits during seven
days of their lives at three times a day. The experiment was carried out in rabbit house in the
Federal University of Lavras at Lavras, Brazil. To characterize the thermal environment sensors
were used to measure the dry bulb temperature and relative humidity at 48 points inside the rabbit
house, at 6:00 a.m., 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. In addition, the temperature and humidity index
(THI) was calculated. The respiratory rate and the superficial temperature of the rabbits' ears were
measured. Behaviour evaluations were monitored in punctual record, with duration of two
min/cage. Later an ethogram was made with the main behaviours identified. Similar data of
behaviour and data of physiological responses were identified by using Ward’s method of cluster
analysis. It was observed the period of 6 a.m. showed more comfortable conditions of THI values
than the others analysed. Besides, physiological responses presented better values at 6:00 a.m. in
comparison to 12:00 and 6:00 p.m. Furthermore, in general, a similar behaviour was observed in
the rabbits at 12:00 and 6:00 p.m., while at 6:00 a.m. was different. But rabbits demonstrated to
be more comfortable at 6 a.m. maybe because at this time environment conditions were better
than the rest of the day. Besides, it can be observed that rabbits were more active in sunrise and
sunset than in the rest of the day
Renormalization Group and Asymptotic Spin--Charge separation for Chiral Luttinger liquids
The phenomenon of Spin-Charge separation in non-Fermi liquids is well
understood only in certain solvable d=1 fermionic systems. In this paper we
furnish the first example of asymptotic Spin-Charge separation in a d=1 non
solvable model. This goal is achieved using Renormalization Group approach
combined with Ward-Identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, corrected by the
presence of a bandwidth cut-offs. Such methods, contrary to bosonization, could
be in principle applied also to lattice or higher dimensional systems.Comment: 45 pages, 11 figure
Experimental Observation of Quantum Correlations in Modular Variables
We experimentally detect entanglement in modular position and momentum
variables of photon pairs which have passed through -slit apertures. We
first employ an entanglement criteria recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett.
{\bf 106}, 210501 (2011)], using variances of the modular variables. We then
propose an entanglement witness for modular variables based on the Shannon
entropy, and test it experimentally. Finally, we derive criteria for
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Steering correlations using variances and entropy
functions. In both cases, the entropic criteria are more successful at
identifying quantum correlations in our data.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, comments welcom
Indoor air pollution on nurseries and primary schools: impact on childhood asthma – study protocol
BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated an association between the exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) and childhood asthma. Evidence is suggesting that several air pollutants may contribute to both exacerbation and development of asthma, but some uncertainty remains concerning the specific causative role of IAP. This paper reports an epidemiologic study aiming to reduce the existing lacks on the association between long-term exposure to pollution mixtures and the development and exacerbation of childhood asthma. METHODS/DESIGN: Based on the implementation of the study in 8 nurseries and 8 primary schools, from which, 2 nurseries and 2 primary schools in sites influenced by traffic and other 2 nurseries and 2 primary schools in background sites at urban and rural areas, the study will analyse the exposure to both urban and rural pollution as well as to traffic emissions (some homes of the children will be included in the study). Furthermore, based on the answers to validated questionnaires (as those used in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood - ISAAC) filled in by the parents and on medical exams, the study will assess the prevalence, incidence and exacerbation of asthma, thus considering both short and long-term effects. The approximate number of children in the study will never be less than 600, guaranteeing 80% of study power (significant at a 5% level). DISCUSSION: This study intends to contribute for the understanding of the role of environmental factors, namely indoor air pollution, on asthma considering a risk group of different ages, and for the development of preventive measures, which are considered priority issues by the European Commission, according to the European Environmental Agency and the World Health Organization
