The Monte Carlo Event Generator DPMJET-III
A new version of the Monte Carlo event generator DPMJET is presented. It is a
code system based on the Dual Parton Model and unifies all features of the
DTUNUC-2, DPMJET-II and PHOJET 1.12 event generators. DPMJET-III allows the
simulation of hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, photon-hadron,
photon-photon and photon-nucleus interactions from a few GeV up to the highest
cosmic ray energies.Comment: 6 pages, Talk given at the Conference ``Monte Carlo 2000'', Lisbon,

Stability analysis and quasinormal modes of Reissner Nordstr{\o}m Space-time via Lyapunov exponent
We explicitly derive the proper time principal Lyapunov exponent
() and coordinate time () principal Lyapunov exponent
() for Reissner Nordstr{\o}m (RN) black hole (BH) . We also
compute their ratio. For RN space-time, it is shown that the ratio is
for
time-like circular geodesics and for Schwarzschild BH it is
. We
further show that their ratio may vary from
orbit to orbit. For instance, Schwarzschild BH at innermost stable circular
orbit(ISCO), the ratio is
and at marginally
bound circular orbit (MBCO) the ratio is calculated to be
. Similarly, for extremal RN
BH the ratio at ISCO is
.
We also further analyse the geodesic stability via this exponent. By evaluating
the Lyapunov exponent, it is shown that in the eikonal limit , the real and
imaginary parts of the quasi-normal modes of RN BH is given by the frequency
and instability time scale of the unstable null circular geodesics.Comment: Accepted in Pramana, 07/09/201
Duality relations for the ASEP conditioned on a low current
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a finite
lattice with periodic boundary conditions, conditioned to carry an atypically
low current. For an infinite discrete set of currents, parametrized by the
driving strength , , we prove duality relations which arise from
the quantum algebra symmetry of the generator of the
process with reflecting boundary conditions. Using these duality relations we
prove on microscopic level a travelling-wave property of the conditioned
process for a family of shock-antishock measures for particles: If the
initial measure is a member of this family with microscopic shocks at
positions , then the measure at any time of the process
with driving strength is a convex combination of such measures with
shocks at positions . which can be expressed in terms of
-particle transition probabilities of the conditioned ASEP with driving
strength .Comment: 26 page
Transformation of spin information into large electrical signals via carbon nanotubes
Spin electronics (spintronics) exploits the magnetic nature of the electron,
and is commercially exploited in the spin valves of disc-drive read heads.
There is currently widespread interest in using industrially relevant
semiconductors in new types of spintronic devices based on the manipulation of
spins injected into a semiconducting channel between a spin-polarized source
and drain. However, the transformation of spin information into large
electrical signals is limited by spin relaxation such that the magnetoresistive
signals are below 1%. We overcome this long standing problem in spintronics by
demonstrating large magnetoresistance effects of 61% at 5 K in devices where
the non-magnetic channel is a multiwall carbon nanotube that spans a 1.5 micron
gap between epitaxial electrodes of the highly spin polarized manganite
La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. This improvement arises because the spin lifetime in nanotubes
is long due the small spin-orbit coupling of carbon, because the high nanotube
Fermi velocity permits the carrier dwell time to not significantly exceed this
spin lifetime, because the manganite remains highly spin polarized up to the
manganite-nanotube interface, and because the interfacial barrier is of an
appropriate height. We support these latter statements regarding the interface
using density functional theory calculations. The success of our experiments
with such chemically and geometrically different materials should inspire
adventure in materials selection for some future spintronicsComment: Content highly modified. New title, text, conclusions, figures and

HEPATITIS C IS ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH LEVELS OF CIRCULATING N-TERMINAL PRO-BRAIN NATRIURETIC PEPTIDE AND INTERLEUKIN-6
To our knowledge, no study has evaluated N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) together with interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interferon (IFN)-gamma serum levels in a large series of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) as possible markers of cardiac dysfunction. NTproBNP and IL-6 serum levels were valued in 55 HCV-patients, and in 55 sex- and age-matched controls. HCV-patients showed significantly higher mean NTproBNP and IL-6 levels than controls (P= 0.001); no significant difference was observed for IFN-gamma. By defining high NTproBNP level as a value higher than 300 pg/mL (that is used to rule out heart failure in patients under 75 years of age), 12% (6/49) of HCV-patients and 0 of controls had NTproBNP (chi(2); P = 0.012). In conclusion, this study demonstrates high levels of circulating NTproBNP and IL-6 in HCV-patients. The increase of NTproBNP may indicate the presence of a subclinical cardiac dysfunction. Further prospective studies quantifying symptoms and correlating these with echocardiographic parameters are needed to confirm this association
Mutation Symmetries in BPS Quiver Theories: Building the BPS Spectra
We study the basic features of BPS quiver mutations in 4D
supersymmetric quantum field theory with gauge symmetries.\ We show,
for these gauge symmetries, that there is an isotropy group
associated to a set of quiver mutations capturing
information about the BPS spectra. In the strong coupling limit, it is shown
that BPS chambers correspond to finite and closed groupoid orbits with an
isotropy symmetry group isomorphic to the discrete
dihedral groups contained in Coxeter with the
Coxeter number of G. These isotropy symmetries allow to determine the BPS
spectrum of the strong coupling chamber; and give another way to count the
total number of BPS and anti-BPS states of gauge theories. We
also build the matrix realization of these mutation groups from which we read directly the electric-magnetic
charges of the BPS and anti-BPS states of QFT as well as
their matrix intersections. We study as well the quiver mutation symmetries in
the weak coupling limit and give their links with infinite Coxeter groups. We
show amongst others that is contained in
; and isomorphic to the infinite Coxeter
. Other issues such as building
and are also
studied.Comment: LaTeX, 98 pages, 18 figures, Appendix I on groupoids adde
Cytological analysis of hybrids among triticales and trigopiros
We studied three different tricepiros: (Don Santiago x Don Noé), (Cumé x Horovitz) and (Cumé x Don Noé). The tricepiro (Don Santiago x Don Noé) was obtained by crossing the triticale Don Santiago INTA (AABBRR, 2n = 6x = 42) with the trigopiro Don Noé INTA (AABBDDJJ, 2n = 8x = 56). The number of chromosomes for the F1 was 2n = 49, the most frequent meiotic configuration being 14 bivalents and 21 univalents. The univalents were situated in the periphery of the equatorial plane, whereas the bivalents were located in the central zone. The chromatids in some of the univalents split when bivalents underwent reductional division in anaphase I. There were few laggard chromosomes or chromatids at this phase. The number of chromosomes (2n = 48-58) was high and variable, and the number of bivalents per cell (18-23) also high in F 3 individuals. In all F 8 tricepiros (Don Santiago x Don Noé), F 12 tricepiros (Cumé x Horovitz) and F 12 tricepiros (Cumé x Don Noé), the number of chromosomes (2n = 42) was the same, these retaining the rye genome, as demonstrated by GISH and FISH. These new synthesized allopolyploids constitute interesting models for investigating the evolutionary changes responsible for diploidization, and the chromosomal and genomic re-ordering that cannot be revealed in natural allopolyploids
d=3 Bosonic Vector Models Coupled to Chern-Simons Gauge Theories
We study three dimensional O(N)_k and U(N)_k Chern-Simons theories coupled to
a scalar field in the fundamental representation, in the large N limit. For
infinite k this is just the singlet sector of the O(N) (U(N)) vector model,
which is conjectured to be dual to Vasiliev's higher spin gravity theory on
AdS_4. For large k and N we obtain a parity-breaking deformation of this
theory, controlled by the 't Hooft coupling lambda = 4 \pi N / k. For infinite
N we argue (and show explicitly at two-loop order) that the theories with
finite lambda are conformally invariant, and also have an exactly marginal
(\phi^2)^3 deformation.
For large but finite N and small 't Hooft coupling lambda, we show that there
is still a line of fixed points parameterized by the 't Hooft coupling lambda.
We show that, at infinite N, the interacting non-parity-invariant theory with
finite lambda has the same spectrum of primary operators as the free theory,
consisting of an infinite tower of conserved higher-spin currents and a scalar
operator with scaling dimension \Delta=1; however, the correlation functions of
these operators do depend on lambda. Our results suggest that there should
exist a family of higher spin gravity theories, parameterized by lambda, and
continuously connected to Vasiliev's theory. For finite N the higher spin
currents are not conserved.Comment: 34 pages, 29 figures. v2: added reference
