    On the Sobolev trace Theorem for variable exponent spaces in the critical range

    In this paper we study the Sobolev Trace Theorem for variable exponent spaces with critical exponents. We find conditions on the best constant in order to guaranty the existence of extremals. Then we give local conditions on the exponents and on the domain (in the spirit of Adimurthy and Yadava) in order to satisfy such conditions, and therefore to ensure the existence of extremals.Comment: 21 pages, submitte

    A Gamma convergence approach to the critical Sobolev embedding in variable exponent spaces

    In this paper, we study the critical Sobolev embeddings W1,p(.)(Ω)⊂Lp*(.)(Ω) for variable exponent Sobolev spaces from the point of view of the Γ-convergence. More precisely we determine the Γ-limit of subcritical approximation of the best constant associated with this embedding.     Reconstructing Detailed Line Profiles of Lamellar Gratings from GISAXS Patterns with a Maxwell Solver

    Laterally periodic nanostructures were investigated with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) by using the diffraction patterns to reconstruct the surface shape. To model visible light scattering, rigorous calculations of the near and far field by numerically solving Maxwell's equations with a finite-element method are well established. The application of this technique to X-rays is still challenging, due to the discrepancy between incident wavelength and finite-element size. This drawback vanishes for GISAXS due to the small angles of incidence, the conical scattering geometry and the periodicity of the surface structures, which allows a rigorous computation of the diffraction efficiencies with sufficient numerical precision. To develop dimensional metrology tools based on GISAXS, lamellar gratings with line widths down to 55 nm were produced by state-of-the-art e-beam lithography and then etched into silicon. The high surface sensitivity of GISAXS in conjunction with a Maxwell solver allows a detailed reconstruction of the grating line shape also for thick, non-homogeneous substrates. The reconstructed geometrical line shape models are statistically validated by applying a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling technique which reveals that GISAXS is able to reconstruct critical parameters like the widths of the lines with sub-nm uncertainty

    In this paper we study sufficient local conditions for the existence of non-trivial solution to a critical equation for the p(x)-Laplacian where the critical term is placed as a source through the boundary of the domain.     Kinetic characterization of digestive proteinases extracted from the processing waste of South Atlantic fish

    In Argentina, the fishing industry is highly developed, producing large quantities of waste products from fish processing which contain digestive enzymes with potential biotechnological uses. Among these enzymes are proteinases that hydrolyze proteins and can convert them into functional ingredients. To use these value-added compounds in industrial processes, kinetic characterization of these proteinases under specific conditions, such as contact time, pH, and temperature, must first be carried out. The objective of the present work was to perform a kinetic characterization of crude extracts of alkaline proteinases from intestine-ceca of Merluccius hubbsi, Percophis brasiliensis, Urophycis brasiliensis, and Cynoscion guatucupa. Results showed that the reached maximum values of A440 depended on both the species analyzed and the initial concentration of azocasein. The maximum concentration of hydrolysis products obtained at long times was proportional to the initial concentration of the target protein. P. brasiliensis was the most suitable tested species to obtain high hydrolysis rates at high azocasein concentrations, and exhibited the highest proteinase activities, so it can be considered a candidate species for future biotechnological applications.Fil: Friedman, Ivana Soledad.     Pomegranate transplant stress can be ameliorated by rhizophagus intraradices under nursery management

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) establish an obligate mutualistic symbiosis with many plant species, increasing the uptake of phosphorous and other low-mobile nutrients by roots. In addition, AMF improve biotic and abiotic stress tolerance of host plants. Under these conditions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase occasional damage to proteins, lipids and DNA. Antioxidative enzymes in plants can play an important role in detoxifying ROS, thereby alleviating oxidative stress. In nursery practices, plants are subjected at least to two transplant conditions before being transplanted outside. It is important to achieve an optimal plant size to withstand environmental or other stresses when plants are transplanted into the field. The transplantation process can be considered a stress because plants have to adapt to new abiotic and biotic (rhizospheric) conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two Rhizophagus intraradices (N.C. Schenck & G.S. Sm.) C. Walker & A. Schüßler strains, GA5 and GC2, single and co-inoculated under two-transplant soil conditions, sterile and non-sterile, using cuttings of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) as a model plant. These results showed that the GA5 single strain-inoculated plants improved growth and antioxidative enzyme responses to two transplant stress conditions. In conclusion, early mycorrhizal inoculation generates healthy plants that are more protected against environmental conditions, thereby improving plant transplant stress tolerance.Fil: Bompadre, Maria Josefina.     Energy reserves mobilization: Strategies of three decapod species

    In food deprivation assays, several different responses have been observed in crustaceans. However, studying energy reserves utilization among more than one species during the same starvation period has not yet been performed, particularly to discern whether the responses are due to intrinsic and/or environmental factors. We hypothesize that decapod species with similar feeding habits have the same strategies in the use of energetic reserves during starvation, even though they inhabit different environments. The aim of this study was to compare the energy reserves mobilization of three decapods species (Cherax quadricarinatus, Palaemon argentinus and Munida gregaria) with similar feeding habits, exposed to similar food deprivation conditions. The crayfish, shrimp and squat-lobster were experimentally kept at continuous feeding or continuous starvation throughout 15 days. Every 3rd day, the midgut gland index (MGI), and the glycogen, lipid and protein contents were measured in the midgut gland (MG) and pleon muscle. Palaemon argentinus mobilized more reserves during starvation, followed by C. quadricarinatus, and the last M. gregaria. The starved shrimps presented low MGI, whereas MG showed a reduction in glycogen (from day 6 to 15), lipid (from day 3 to 15), and protein levels (at day 9 and 15) while in their muscle, lipid reserves decreased at days 3 and 6. In C. quadricarinatus, the most affected parameters in the MG were MGI, glycogen (from day 6 to 15), and lipids (at day 12 and 15). In the MG of M. gregaria only the glycogen was reduced during fasting from 3 to 15 days. Even though the three studied species have similar feeding habitats, we found that their energetic profile utilization is different and it could be explained by the habitat, life span, temperature, organ/tissue, and metabolism of the species.
