Clinical, histological and prognostic features of a novel nail-bed lesion of cats: 41 cases

    Get PDF
There is a distinct subset of lesions arising on the digits of cats, located at or close to the nail-bed epithelium, which are typically composed of proliferative fibroblast-like cells, multinucleate giant cells and areas of osseous metaplasia, but currently there is no published literature detailing the clinical or histological features of these lesions. This study identified 41 such cases from two large commercial diagnostic laboratories and assessed various histological and clinical features; 22 cases had additional follow-up data available

Optical and Near Infrared Study of the Cepheus E outflow, a very low excitation object

    Get PDF
We present images and spectra of the Cepheus E (Cep E) region at both optical and infrared wavelengths. Only the brightest region of the southern lobe of the Cep E outflow reveals optical emission, suggesting that the extinction close to the outflow source plays an important r\^ole in the observed difference between the optical and IR morphologies. Cep E is a unique object since it provides a link between the spectroscopic properties of the optical Herbig-Haro (HH) objects and those of deeply embedded outflows.Comment: Accepted Astron. Observation of an orbital interaction-induced Feshbach resonance in 173-Yb

We report on the experimental observation of a novel inter-orbital Feshbach resonance in ultracold 173-Yb atoms, which opens the possibility of tuning the interactions between the 1S0 and 3P0 metastable state, both possessing vanishing total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via inter-orbital cross-thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Transdisciplinarity in strategic decisions for oncological treatments

    Get PDF
The current models for equity and access to new oncological treatments are under strain due to the economic and demographic crisis in Europe as well as the rising costs of innovative drugs. Cancer treatment needs a model of patient-centered care in which an interdisciplinary care plan, based on evidence-based practice is essential for patient wellbeing. Physicians should be focused in the doctor-patient relationship and informed consent is important, especially when new medicines are prescribed. Related with informed consent, there is therapeutic privilege. Moreover, utilitarianism and social justice have to be considered without compromising human dignity and the principle of economy cannot be ignored in the provision of public services. An interdisciplinary approach is essential for the new oncological drugs approval. Therefore, transdisciplinary decision between civil society, pharmaceuticals, healthcare professionals and policy makers is essential in order to assure quality, access to innovation and equity in oncological care.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Paper presented at the ECKM 2010 – 11th European Conference on Knowledge Management, 2-3 September, 2010, Famalicão, Portugal. URL: http://www.academic-conferences.org/eckm/eckm2010/eckm10-home.htmEnterprise Information Portals (EIP) are being increasingly referred in the literature as one interesting technological solution to support organizations in their knowledge management initiatives. This paper seeks to explore the hidden potential of enterprise information portals to support knowledge management initiatives through the usage of social network analysis on research results and co-authorship/co-work relationships that may suggest ways to more effectively utilize knowledge capital and other organizational resources. For that purpose in this paper we will present field research results on evaluating knowledge management and human capital assets based on EIP data repositories using social network analysis. This evaluation will be made through the use of social network analysis techniques applied to authorship data from papers published in international journals with refereeing covering the last twenty years of research activities from a Portuguese leading research institution in the field of telecommunications - Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT)

Factors influencing charter flight departure delay

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify the main factors leading to charter flight departure delay through data mining. The data sample analysed consists of 5,484 flights operated by a European airline between 2014 and 2017. The tuned dataset of 33 features was used for modelling departure delay (e.g., if the flight delayed more than 15 minutes). The results proved the value of the proposed approach by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.831 and supported knowledge extraction through the data-based sensitivity analysis. The features related to previous flight delay information were considered as being the most influential toward current flight being delayed or not, which is consistent with the propagating effect of flight delays. However, it is not the reason for the previous delay nor the delay duration that accounted for the most relevance. Instead, a computed feature indicating if there were two or more registered reasons accounted for 33% of relevance. The contributions include also using a broader data mining approach supported by an extensive data understanding and preparation stage using both proprietary and open access data sources to build a comprehensive dataset.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Electrochemical properties of oxygen-enriched carbon-based nanomaterials

    Get PDF
The introduction of oxygen moieties on a carbon-based material to enhance the electrode material activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a most unexplored experimental approach due to the risk of reducing the electron-transport ability of the electrode material. Herein, it is shown that carbon nanomaterials generated electrochemically from graphite can simultaneously show an anomalous high content of oxygen functionalities and a high heterogeneous electron transfer rate. This study was demonstrated with a set of four samples, prepared at different galvanostatic conditions. All the samples display a non-ordered carbon network dominated by aromatic rings, an O/C ratio greater than 0.4, but different amounts of various oxygen-containing functionalities. The electron-transport properties of the obtained films were appraised by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The application of these metal-free electrode materials to the ORR in the alkaline medium has shown a direct correlation between the materials catalytic activity (potential onset, kinetic current and number of electrons transferred) and the Cdouble bondO amount, whereas a negative correlation was found for Csingle bondO. Their excellent ability for the H2O2 reduction was also demonstrated. This work opens a new perspective on the use of highly oxidized carbon nanomaterials in electrocatalysis.publishe
