“I know of places where there are stones that talk to me”: A. M. Pires Cabral’s "Arado" through the lens of Ecocriticism
A.M. Pires Cabral (b. 1941) is a Portuguese poet, novelist, essayist, and translator.
His first book of poetry
Somewhere
in the Northeast
(1974),
condenses the originality of
his poetic achievement: the meeting between classic form and rural experience.
Stemming from the fact that his poetry is based on a specific place and on an instance of
attention to ordinary people and objects is a vision which underlines the involvement of
the human destiny with the landscape we inhabit.
This paper concentrates on the way
A.
M. Pires Cabral’s poetry
has been an example of attentiveness to and of human
conversation with the non-human world. Its uniqueness stems
from the relationship to a
remote and rural Portuguese region. If isolation defines the place, Pires Cabral’s poetry
builds a sense of inclusion and communion between physical place, people, and animals,
that is, a sense of belonging. The article analyses

A comparative study of black and white Allium sativum L.: nutritional composition and bioactive properties
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) has been used worldwide not only for its being a subject of
dietary interest, but also for medicinal purposes, in prophylaxis, and for the treatment of diverse
pathologies. New processing techniques have been developed and placed on the market in recent
years to improve the organoleptic and nutritional value of food products. The present work aimed
to study bulbils (cloves) of white (commercial and traditionally cultivated samples with di erent
proveniences) and black (processed samples) garlic. All samples were compared with regard to their
nutritional composition as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Black garlic had the
lowest moisture content but the highest total amount of sugars and energetic value. Black garlic
also presented the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial (especially against methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus) activities. Thus, black garlic, obtained by processing techniques, can be
considered a promising product with high value that will be able to be exploited by the functional
food/nutraceutical industry. The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) and FEDER

Feminine Identities
The first four essays in this volume all focus on issues of gender in the works of different English authors and thinkers. Shorter versions of each of these essays were formerly presented as papers in an autonomous section of the Research and Educational Programme on Studies of Identity at the XXth Meeting of the Portuguese Association of Anglo-American Studies (Póvoa de Varzim, 1999) and published in the proceedings of the conference. The second cluster of essays in this volume — two of which (Jennie Wang’s and Teresa Cid’s) were first presented, in shorter versions, at the joint ASA/CAAS Conference (Montréal, 1999) — addresses the work of American women variously engaged in contexts of cultural diversity and grappling with the ideas of what it means to be an American and a woman, particularly in the twentieth century. These essays approach, from different angles, the definitional quandaries and semantic difficulties encountered when speaking about the self and the United States and provide, in one way or another, a sort of feminine rewriting of American myths and history.

O projecto apresentado neste texto – “Transformar a

Mushroom-based cosmeceutical ingredients: Microencapsulation and in vitro release profile
[EN]Mushrooms can be used as a source of cosmeceutical ingredients. Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus ethanolic extracts present important bioactive properties, but with some compounds showing easy oxidation and degradation. In the present work, microencapsulation by atomization/coagulation technique was used to protect the extracts. The obtained microspheres were characterised in terms of morphology, particle size distribution and encapsulation efficiency. Microencapsulated extracts were incorporated into a semi-solid base cream and their performance compared with the use of the free forms in terms of bioactivity, and in vitro release using the cosmetic matrix and real time conditions (up to 6 months). The physico-chemical properties (colour and pH) of the developed formulations were also monitored over the same time period. The cosmeceutical formulations containing free extracts displayed bioactivity. For the formulations prepared with the encapsulated forms, the release of the extracts was achieved and anti-tyrosinase and antimicrobial activities were observed, while for the antioxidant activity, the extract release over the time was not sufficient to exert an effect. Overall, the use of mushroom extracts in free or encapsulated forms can be an option in cosmeceutical formulations, and the encapsulated forms can allow a controlled release leading to bioactivity control
Fire performance of wood and wood-based panels towards the development of wood fire doors
Fires in buildings continue to be responsible for high human and economic losses. The increasing demand for legal requirements in the fire safety sector has been complemented by performance criteria of construction products, increasing the requirements of their essential technical characteristics, such as thermal, acoustic, and fire behaviour, as prescribed in the European Construction Products Regulation (CPR).
This work addresses the development of an innovative system for the production of wood fire doors based on solid wood, wood-based panels, and lightweight materials with enhanced fire performance, aiming at improving the integrity and insulation (EI) fire resistance time.
For this purpose, the fire behaviour of different solid woods and wood-based panels were analysed in a cone calorimeter, under the action of a 75 [kW/m2] radiative heat flux. The study considers pine wood (Pinus pinaster), tulip tree wood (Liriodendron tulipifera), plywood panels, and Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) of different thicknesses. During each test, the heat release rate, total heat release, and sample mass loss were measured and evaluated for comparison. Using a set of thermocouples type k placed on the exposed face and non-exposed faces, and in the sample interior at different depths, the temperature evolution was measured over time, allowing to determine the through-thickness heating rate.
Results show a mass loss rate that changes with the MDF thickness, resulting in a reduction of 50% mass loss after 3.73 [min] and 11.57 [min] exposure, for 10 [mm] and 22 [mm] boards, respectively. Similarly, the peak heat release rate is higher for thinner boards. Plywood boards have higher heat release rates compared to MDF boards, with the same thickness, due to the resin used between each layer. For the same exposure time, the pine wood samples release more heat compared to the tulip wood, having the latter a higher mass loss rate.
The temperature distribution measured across the thickness allowed the estimation of the charring rate and evaluate the insulation performance of each sample.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The use of the EUROHIS-QOL-8 to assess the perception of quality of life at Termas de Chaves
Quality of life is a person's perception of life in the context they belong in. It compresses multiple dimensions that need to be assessed. The EUROHIS-QOL-8 scale is an instrument that measures the subjective well-being of individuals and the impact of different health issues. It is a brief tool to measure the quality of life that includes eight items. The higher the results shown in this scale, the better the quality of life of individuals. The EUROHIS-QOL-8 has been proven to have good internal consistency and an excellent index for measuring the quality of life. It has been validated and reliable in many different contexts of application. This paper uses EUROHIS-QOL-8 to evaluate thermalists' perception of quality of life before and after attending a thermal spa. It intends to identify if there are differences between the state of quality of life before and after using thermal spa services. For this purpose, a self-administrated questionnaire was applied to the Termas de Chaves' users during the 2021 thermal season, i.e., between 09 August and 20 December. A convenience method of non-probability sampling allowed to obtain a sample of 213 thermal users. The data were analysed through statistical techniques of exploratory descriptive and inferential analysis. The results showed statistically significant differences in customers' perception of quality of life before and after 14 days of treatment. In addition, the study of five sociodemographic variables showed that the categories: female, up to 35 years old, single, without academic qualifications, and housekeeper were the most benefited from the thermal treatments. Regarding the analysis of pathologies, the participants guided by their family doctor to attend the Chaves thermal springs for respiratory problems showed the most significant improvement. The paper's results dissemination becomes an added value for verifying the benefits of thermal spas on the individuals' quality of life. It also allows for better development of thermal spa products to improve the quality of life perceived by individuals.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
