Kinematics is one of the most studied concepts in physics because its understanding is connected with the description of movements without caring about its causes. This branch involves the greatnesses: speed, space traveled, time, acceleration, among others. This article studies an actual application of kinematics, in which a motorcyclist travels on an avenue and is alerted about a speed radar. This work has the main objective of designing a mobile application to establish if the rider meets the speed of up to 40 km / h on the avenue. The software elaborated besides contributing to the teaching learning of the one who executes it, solves a very common situation nowadays. Based on the specific analysis of the application, there have been cases in which vehicles travel with speed within the tolerance limit of the place

Emptying time of a swimming pool with cylindrical output duct calculated with practice by a software / Tempo de esvaziamento de uma piscina com duto de saída cilíndrico calculado com a prática por um software

The creation of new methodologies grows along with digital media as more and more solutions to problems encountered in engineering are required. This work has as main objective to develop an application to determine the necessary time of discharge of a fluid in a pool, since this can be established through the flow rate of the liquid in a permanent flow. Besides contributing to solve a problem found in the mechanics of fluids, the application ensures a more effective teaching-learning for the user who executes it. Some considerations have served to show that emptying of the industrial reservoir depends on some variables such as water column, reservoir base diameter, and fluid outlet duct. From the results obtained, it was observed that the larger the outlet duct diameter and, the lower the water column height, the shorter is the fluid emptying time in the pool

Software developed to calculate electric motor power / Software desenvolvido para calcular a potência do motor elétrico

    Get PDF
The use of electric motors is common for many types of vehicles, from motorcycles to aircraft or large ships. The electric motor, also called an electric machine, serves to transform electrical energy into mechanical energy. The most commonly used type of electric motor is induction, which is used in almost any application, covering hostile environments, explosives, naval applications, among others. The use of the electric motor is defined from its power. Its determination depends on three important variables, being those the voltage, current, and efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to produce software for mobile devices to calculate the power of an electric motor. According to the results obtained, it is verified that the parameter analyzed presents several behaviors when related to its dependent parameters

Dimensioning of parts exposed to the mechanical turning process through an application for mobile devices / Dimensionamento de peças expostas ao processo de torneamento mecânico através de uma aplicação para dispositivos móveis

The present article aims to study some common equations in calculations of the mechanical turning process, using active teaching-learning methodologies. Thus, this work has as main objective to develop an application to determine the various variables necessary for the dimensioning of the parts to be turned inside the machining. The expressions used in the application show the Cutting Speed, Advance per Rotation, and Cut Time. In addition to the great contribution to the teaching-learning of the user executing the application, it provides solutions to daily activities that involve these types of problems in Mechanical Engineering. From the obtained results, it was observed that the Cutting Speed, Rotation Advance and Cut Time presented modifications with variations of the properties connected to these cutting parameters

Insulin signaling pathways in a patient with insulin resistance of difficult management - a case report

Insulin signalling pathways were investigated in a 33 year-old woman with immunologic insulin resistance. Her past medical history was remarkable for intermittent use of insulin and allergic reactions to several drugs, and measure of plasma anti-insulin antibodies level corroborated the clinical suspicion of immune mediated insulin resistance (8074 nU/ml - RIA - Ref value: <60). Treatment with several immunosuppressive regimens was tried, however the results were disappointing. Possible subcellular mechanisms of insulin resistance were investigated by performing analysis of insulin receptor and post receptor signaling in skeletal muscle biopsy. The expression of insulin receptor (IR), insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT-4) was evaluated in total extract from muscle tissue by Western blotting. Basal IR, IRS-1 and GLUT-4 expression was detected, however receptor autophosphorylation was not observed. A study of translocation of GLUT-4 to plasma membrane showed that tissue presented low levels of membrane-associated GLUT-4. When in vitro stimulation was undertaken, tissue was capable to be responsive to insulin. Our results suggest that even though IR expression was normally occurring, IR β-subunit tyrosine kinase activity in muscle was down-regulated leading to alterations in insulin post receptor signaling. Consistent with normal insulin receptor and post receptor signaling, our results were compatible with decreased insulin binding to IR probably due to neutralization by anti-insulin antibodies. In conclusion, this patient has immunologic insulin resistance and treatment should be based on immunosuppressive drugs as tolerated

Morphological characteristics of Schistosoma mansoni PZQ-resistant and -susceptible strains are different in presence of Praziquantel

Schistosomiasis is one of the most common human parasitic diseases whose socioeconomic impact is only surpassed by malaria. Praziquantel (PZQ) is the only drug commercially available for the treatment of all schistosome species causing disease in humans. However, there has been stronger evidences of PZQ-resistance on Schistosoma mansoni and thus it is very important to study the phenotypic characteristics associated with it. The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological alterations in S. mansoni PZQ-resistant adult worms and eggs, by comparing a PZQ- resistant strain obtained under PZQ drug pressure with a PZQ-susceptible strain. For this, scanning electronic microscopy was used to assess tegumental responsiveness of both strains under PZQ exposure, and optical microscopy allowed the monitoring of worms and eggs in the presence of the drug. Those assays showed that PZQ-susceptible worms exposed to the drug had more severe tegumental damages than the resistant one, which had only minor alterations. Moreover, contrary to what occurred in the susceptible strain, resistant worms were viable after PZQ exposure and gradually regaining full motility after removal of the drug. Eggs from resistant strain parasites are considerably smaller than those from susceptible strain. Our results suggest that there might be a difference in the tegument composition of the resistant strain and that worms are less responsive to PZQ. Changes observed in egg morphology might imply alterations in the biology of schistosomes associated to PZQ-resistance, which could impact on transmission and pathology of the disease. Moreover, we propose a hypothetical scenario where there is a different egg tropism of the S. mansoni resistant strain. This study is the first comparing two strains that only differ in their resistance characteristics, which makes it a relevant step in the search for resistance determinants.publishersversionpublishe
