Immune response after experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in rats subjected to calorie restriction

Male Lewis rats (6 weeks-old) were submitted to a calorie restriction equivalent to 33% or 66% of food restriction. Fifteen days later, groups of 7 animals were injected with complete Freund's adjuvant plus spinal cord homogenate (SCH) to induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) or with complete Freund's adjuvant alone. EAE was defined solely on clinical grounds. Rats were assessed daily for clinical signs of EAE and were killed on day 15 after immunization. Both diet and SCH injection diminished body weight significantly. In contrast to rats receiving a normal diet or a 33% calorie-restricted diet, rats subjected to severe calorie restriction did not exhibit clinical signs of EAE. Concomitantly with the lack of disease manifestation, 66% of calorie-restricted rats injected with SCH showed significantly less splenic and lymph node mitogenic response to concanavalin A (Con A) and a higher splenic response to lipopolysaccharide. Fewer splenic, lymph node and thymic CD4(+ )cells, greater numbers of splenic and lymph node CD8(+ )and CD4(+)- CD8(+ )cells, and fewer splenic T, B and T-B cells, and lymph node and thymic B and T-B cells were observed. There was impaired interferon (IFN)-γ production occurred in the three examined tissues. The results are compatible with the view that the acute phase of EAE can be curtailed by severe calorie restriction, presumably through impaired IFN-γ production

Early Appearance of Epicardial Adipose Tissue through Human Development

    Get PDF
Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a visceral fat depot with unique anatomic, biomolecular and genetic features. Due to its proximity to the coronary arteries and myocardium, dysfunctional EAT may contribute to the development and progression of cardiovascular and metabolic-related adiposity-based chronic diseases. The aim of this work was to describe, by morphological techniques, the early origin of EAT. Methods: EAT adipogenesis was studied in 41 embryos from 32 gestational days (GD) to 8 gestational weeks (GW) and in 23 fetuses until full term (from 9 to 36 GW). Results: This process comprises five stages. Stage 1 appears as mesenchyme at 33–35 GD. Stage 2 is characterized by angiogenesis at 42–45 GD. Stage 3 covers up to 34 GW with the appearance of small fibers in the extracellular matrix. Stage 4 is visible around the coronary arteries, as multilocular adipocytes in primitive fat lobules, and Stage 5 is present with unilocular adipocytes in the definitive fat lobules. EAT precursor tissue appears as early as the end of the first gestational month in the atrioventricular grooves. Unilocular adipocytes appear at the eighth gestational month. Conclusions: Due to its early origin, plasticity and clinical implications, factors such as maternal health and nutrition might influence EAT early development in consequence

Relationship between the dimensions of Burnout syndrome and job satisfaction

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among Administration and Services Staff. The sample consisted of 87 Administration and Services Staff of Granada’s University. The study was cross-sectional study, and not randomized. Correlational analyzes showed a significant relationship between the dimensions of burnout syndrome and job satisfaction. It was also maintained that these dimensions specifics correlations with eat of the factors of job satisfaction.Proyecto de Innovación Docente ReiDoCrea. Departamento de Psicología Social. Impact of reference change value (RCV) based autoverification on turnaround time and physician satisfaction

BackgroundFor a quicker delivery of laboratory test results to the hospital emergency department (ED), we implemented an autoverification system based on the reference change value (RCV). The aim of this study was to assess how the RCV based autoverification reflected on turnaround time (TAT) and on physician satisfaction. Materials and methodsThe laboratory information system (LIS) was programmed to autoverify the results as long as they were within the range settled by RCV, so that the autoverified results were reported to the physician as soon as the tests were carried out, without any further intervention. We analyzed the same three-month periods’ TAT and verification time (VFT) from the years prior to and following the implementation of RCV autoverification. The change in physicians’ satisfaction levels was assessed using the hospital’s Annual Physician Satisfaction Survey (APSS). Over sixty percent of physicians completed the questionnaire, and the amount of daily ED test requests (nearly three hundred) did not vary throughout the duration of this study. ResultsMann-Whitney U test showed that the VFT was significantly reduced in all the test but troponin I. There were substantial reductions in TAT medians (haemogram, 75%; fibrinogen, 41%; prothrombin time, 40%; sodium, 27%). The percentage of physicians satisfied with the haematological and biochemical tests´ TAT increased from 84% to 93% and from 86% to 91% respectively. ConclusionsOur results reveal that VFT and TAT were severely reduced in most emergency tests, greatly improving physicians’ satisfaction with TAT

Multiple myeloma and SARS-CoV-2 infection: clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of inpatient mortality

There is limited information on the characteristics, prognostic factors, and outcomes of patients with multiplemyeloma (MM) hospitalized with COVID-19. This retrospective case series investigated 167 patients reported from 73hospitals within the Spanish Myeloma Collaborative Group network in March and April, 2020. Outcomes werecompared with 167 randomly selected, contemporary, age-/sex-matched noncancer patients with COVID-19 admittedat six participating hospitals. Among MM and noncancer patients, median age was 71 years, and 57% of patients weremale; 75 and 77% of patients, respectively, had at least one comorbidity. COVID-19 clinical severity wasmoderate-severe in 77 and 89% of patients and critical in 8 and 4%, respectively. Supplemental oxygen was requiredby 47 and 55% of MM and noncancer patients, respectively, and 21%/9% vs 8%/6% required noninvasive/invasiveventilation. Inpatient mortality was 34 and 23% in MM and noncancer patients, respectively. Among MM patients, inpatient mortality was 41% in males, 42% in patients aged >65 years, 49% in patients with active/progressive MM athospitalization, and 59% in patients with comorbid renal disease at hospitalization, which were independentprognostic factors on adjusted multivariate analysis. This case series demonstrates the increased risk and identifiespredictors of inpatient mortality among MM patients hospitalized with COVID-19
