Dissenting Exhibitions by Artists (1968-1998). Reframing Marxist Exhibition Legacy.

The goal of this thesis is to look at the critical and dissenting value of exhibitions through the examination of four cases studies, based on six exhibitions taking place between 1968 and 1998 in Latin and North America. The exhibitions belong to the history of modern and contemporary exhibitions and curating, a field of research and study that has only started to be written about in the last two decades. This investigation contributes to it, in its creation of new genealogies by connecting previously overlooked antecedents, or by proposing new relations within established lineages, at the intersection of a specific historiography; to address exhibitions, a tradition of artists acting as curators and an emerging history of curating. The examined exhibitions were put together by artists or artist collectives and were placed in a liminal position between artistic and curatorial practice. All the cases presented a distinct proposal in relation to art and social change, a fact that connects them, in their aims and modus operandi, to a Marxist and neo-Marxist critical and transformative legacy. The cases address the following connections: exhibition as political site (Tucumán Arde, 1968); exhibition as social space (The People’s Choice (Arroz con Mango), 1981); exhibition as encounter (Rooms with a view, We the People, Art/Artifact, 1987-88); and exhibition as an exchange situation (El Museo de la Calle, 1998-2001). Key to their analysis is the concept of dissensus, as put forward by Jacques Rancière. Within this theoretical framework, these exhibitions put into practice particular cases of dissensus in a given distribution of the sensible. All of them tried to deal with their thematic concerns by performing them as a praxis. They dissent with the way in which reality was formatted in their historical moment and challenge the exhibition medium itself opening new ways of doing and making in the exhibition field. Therefore, in this thesis the dissenting value of exhibitions is closely related to its main features as a medium, namely their temporality, heterogeneity and flexibility, which contribute to their potential for creative analysis and propositioning. In the case of these exhibitions, this capability is brought into play for institutional interrogation, for offering alternative cultural narratives and also for inspiring new imaginary realms

Unsettled Temporalities: Curatorial practice at a crossroads

To write a review at the beginning of 2020 is an intricate task. In a matter of weeks, most debates have become suddenly obsolete and soon we will need to face a very different set of questions. Ironically, the books published last year that presented round figures assessments can now be read as having involuntarily anticipated the end of a cycle. This conclusion is not metaphorical -the usual convention in the calendars-, but a decisive breakpoint that is going to reshape the world as we kno..

[EN] In this paper we aim to reflect on some teaching experiences developed in the course History and Theory of Photography, that is taken by the students in the second year of the Degree in History of Art at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The referred practices have as their main objectives to highlight the materials aspects of photography, to think on its discursive fields, to explore its centrality as a theoretical object and to foster a critical and dialogical attitude in the classroom.[ES] En este texto pretendemos reflexionar acerca de algunas experiencias docentes desarrolladas en la asignatura Historia y Teoría de la Fotografía, enmarcada en el segundo curso del Grado de Historia del Arte de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Las prácticas aquí referidas tienen como objetivo principal incidir en los aspectos materiales de la fotografía, reflexionar sobre sus ámbitos discursivos, explorar su centralidad como objeto teórico y potenciar una actitud crítica y dialógica en el aula.Albarrán Diego, J.; Fernández López, O. The article aims to describe the scientific production regarding the role of the school from the focus of the armed conflict in Colombia and its implication of the social identity of the diverse groups of displaced persons and the role of the different actors from the school setting in the inclusion processes. After conducting the study based on the two moments, the orientation of education is seen as a theoretical approach to the problem of armed conflict, making it possible to demonstrate the impact that this has on the reconstruction of the rights that individuals possess, detecting the application of the restitution of social, economic and cultural rights in populations affected and harmed by the armed conflict. The results show that the discussion regarding the school and the armed conflict in Colombia inclines under the reconstruction of the social fabric, obtaining that the subject can adapt to the individual and collective life, with the processes of construction of their identity, promoting values, recognitions, norms, languages and ways of holding on to the world to build their own experiences and senses of life. In addition, it is important that the State focuses its efforts on developing educational strategies and support for reconstruction projects in the territories where there is armed conflict.

First records of non-indigenous Timarete caribous (Grube, 1859) (Polychaeta; Cirratulidae) in the Western Mediterranean, and its ecology in the Mar Menor (Murcia, SE Spain)

The knowledge and control of invasive species are essential in the management of marine ecosystems. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the marine areas with the highest number of invasive species detected, most of them invertebrates. On a smaller scale, colonization by non-native species in coastal lagoons depends directly on their connectivity with the adjacent sea and on the changes in their environmental conditions induced mainly by human interventions. In this study, the cirratulid species Timarete caribous Grube, 1859, native from the Western and Central Atlantic Ocean, was detected for the first time in a Western Mediterranean coastal lagoon, the Mar Menor. It has been found in dense aggregates on both artificial and natural rocky substrates, mainly in the most important communication channel with the Mediterranean Sea. Following the evolution of this NIS will be important for understanding the dynamic and spread of the species and its possible effects on the indigenous biological communitie

Non-cooperative target identification based on singular value decomposition

Non-Cooperative Target Identification based on High Resolution Range Profiles is a key research domain in the Defense industry. In this paper a method based on the application of Singular Value Decomposition to a matrix of range profiles is defined. The decomposition is applied to reduce dimensionality and to accomplish recognition in the transformed domain. So as to confirm the feasibility of the methodology, identification experiments of profiles coming from electromagnetic simulations are conducted, revealing promising results
