Natural and laser-induced cavitation in corn stems: On the mechanisms of acoustic emissions
Water in plant xylem is often superheated, and therefore in a meta-stable
state. Under certain conditions, it may suddenly turn from the liquid to the
vapor state. This cavitation process produces acoustic emissions. We report the
measurement of ultrasonic acoustic emissions (UAE) produced by natural and
induced cavitation in corn stems. We induced cavitation and UAE in vivo, in
well controlled and reproducible experiments, by irradiating the bare stem of
the plants with a continuous-wave laser beam. By tracing the source of UAE, we
were able to detect absorption and frequency filtering of the UAE propagating
through the stem. This technique allows the unique possibility of studying
localized embolism of plant conduits, and thus to test hypotheses on the
hydraulic architecture of plants. Based on our results, we postulate that the
source of UAE is a transient "cavity oscillation" triggered by the disruptive
effect of cavitation inception.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Apsidal motion in massive close binary systems. I. HD 165052 an extreme case?
We present a new set of radial-velocity measurements of the spectroscopic
binary HD 165052 obtained by disentangling of high-resolution optical spectra.
The longitude of the periastron (60 +- 2 degrees) shows a variation with
respect to previous studies. We have determined the apsidal motion rate of the
system (12.1 +- 0.3 degree/yr), which was used to calculate the absolute masses
of the binary components: M_1 = 22.5 +- 1.0 and M_2 = 20.5 +- 0.9 solar masses.
Analysing the separated spectra we have re-classified the components as O7Vz
and O7.5Vz stars
Pt-impregnated catalysts on powdery SiC and other commercial supports for the combustion of hydrogen under oxidant conditions
We report the study of the catalytic hydrogen combustion over Pt-impregnated powdery silicon carbide (SiC) using H2PtCl6 as precursor. The reaction was conducted in excess of oxygen. β-SiC was selected for the study because of its thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, chemical inertness and surface area. The obtained Pt particles over SiC were medium size (average particle diameter of 5 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt). The activity of the Pt-impregnated catalyst over SiC was compared to those obtained in oxidized form over TiO2 and Al2O3 commercial supports (Pt particles very small in size, average particle diameter of 1 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt in both cases). The case of a SiO2 support was also discussed. Those Pt/SiC particles were the most active because of their higher contribution of surface Pt0, indicating that partially oxidized surfaces have better activity than those totally oxidized in these conditions. SiC was modified with an acid treatment and thus bigger (average particle diameter of 7 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt) and more active Pt particles were obtained. Durability of the SiC and TiO2 supported catalysts was tested upon 5 cycles and both have shown to be durable and even more active than initially. Exposure to the oxidative reaction mixture activates the catalysts and the effect is more pronounced for the completely oxidized particles. Thin film instability with thermal noise
We study the effects of stochastic thermal fluctuations on the instability of
the free surface of a flat liquid film upon a solid substrate. These
fluctuations are represented as a standard Brownian motion that can be added to
the deterministic equation for the film thickness within the lubrication
approximation. Here, we consider that while the noise term is white in time, it
is coloured in space. This allows for the introduction of a finite correlation
length in the description of the randomized intermolecular interaction.
Together with the expected spatial periodicity of the flow, we find a
dimensionless parameter, , that accounts for the relative importance of
the spatial correlation. We perform here the linear stability analysis (LSA) of
the film under the influence of both terms, and find the corresponding power
spectra for the amplitudes of the normal modes of the instability. We compare
this theoretical result with the numerical simulations of the complete
non-linear problem, and find a good agreement for early times. For late times,
we find that the stochastic LSA predictions on the dominant wavelength remains
basically valid. We also use the theoretical spectra to fit experimental data
from a nanometric melted copper film, and find the corresponding times of the
evolution as well as the values of the parameter,
LHCb pentaquarks in constituent quark models
The recently discovered and states at LHCb have
masses close to the and thresholds,
respectively, which suggest that they may have significant meson-baryon
molecular components. We analyze these states in the framework of a constituent
quark model which has been applied to a wide range of hadronic observables,
being the model parameters, therefore, completely constrained.
The and are studied as molecular states composed
by charmed baryons and open charm mesons. Several bound states with the proper
binding energy are found in the and
channels. We discuss the possible assignments of these states from their decay
widths. Moreover, two more states are predicted, associated with the and thresholds.Comment: 5 pages, 2 table
Negotiating Transaction Cost Economics: Oliver Williamson and his audiences
The article studies the interaction between Oliver Williamson and his audiences in the construction of Transaction Cost Economics (TCE). His attentiveness to the feedback from different groups has played a major role in the success of TCE. First we discuss briefly the relevance of rhetoric to the study of economics. Rhetoric stresses that economists talk not to a void, but to peers and lay people with their habits, interests, institutional conditionings and values. Using the toolbox of rhetoric we identify Williamson’s intended audiences. Next we discuss his lists of claimed antecedents and the changes made therein. We explore how those (changing) connections could possibly have incited different audiences. In what follows, we use citation data to delineate his actual readers. This helps compare intended and actual audiences as we close with a discussion of Williamson’s ability to modify his intended reader and widen the audience of TCE in the social sciences.
