    Yield evaluation of enzyme hydrolysis and dark fermentation of the brown seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae hydrothermally pretreated by microwave irradiation

    Microwave irradiation has been applied to solubilise the organic matter from the invasive seaweed Rugulopterix okamurae as pretreatment for two conventional biological processes: enzyme hydrolysis (EH) for obtaining reducing sugars (RS) and dark fermentation (DF) for obtaining volatile fatty acids (VFAs). As operational conditions for the microwave pretreatment, temperature and time has been tested between 120 and 220 °C and 5–20 min respectively. The maximum solubilisation yield in terms of DOC (26%) through the microwave pretreatment was registered at 220 °C at 20 min. However, the maximum concentration for RS (1.8 g/L) was obtained at 200 °C at 20 min due to the decomposition of monomeric sugars at high temperature and the total polyphenols (TP) were above 0.25 g/L (where inhibition in dark fermentation begins to be noticiable) at 180 °C. When the pretreated biomass was used for the EH the maximum accumulated RS production was 160 mg-RS/g-biomass, at 220 °C which was a 35% better than the RS production for non-pretreated biomass. In the case of the DF tests, the maximum yield of VFAs obtained with the pretreated biomass was 46.3 mg/g-biomass at 220 °C while the maximum hydrogen yield was obtained at 200 °C (6.6 mL-H2/g-biomass) due to the high level of TP (1.1 g/L) of pretreated biomass at 220 °C. Despite of this toxic effect, the VFAs production at 220 °C was 93% higher than in the non-pretreated biomass

    Hay una tendencia a tratar de asociar o encontrar en todo aquello que es bello la proporción áurea o divina o a construir objetos a partir de esta razón porque se presuponen serán apreciados como bellos por el simple hecho de seguir dicha pauta. Esto, como no, también ha acontecido con la modelación matemática de la concha del Nautilus pompilius sobre la que suele afirmarse que su forma y crecimiento es áureo. Sin embargo, en este artículo se muestra y se analiza en detalle cómo dicha concha lo que realmente sigue es un patrón ubicado en la denominada proporción cordobesa o humana. Con apoyo en un recurso interactivo desarrollado con la herramienta Descartes se motiva el análisis y comportamiento y se procede a partir de la yocto-yotta realidad observada a construir el modelo matemático

    Management of coastal dunes affected by shrub encroachment: are rabbits an ally or an enemy of restoration?

    In coastal dunes, shrub encroachment disrupts natural disturbance, and reduces habitat heterogeneity and species composition. In this paper, we implemented a pilot scale trial aimed at restoring coastal dunes affected by the encroachment by the shrub Retama monosperma (hereinafter Retama) as well as strengthening the populations of Thymus carnosus (regionally cataloged as ‘Critically Endangered’). A total 3 ha of Retama shrub was clearcut in two sites with different Retama cover (54 and 72%). The effect of rabbits on vegetation recovery was assessed by placing exclosures both in treated and untreated plots in Spring, 2015. Plant composition, species richness and diversity were evaluated two years after treatments (with and without Retama clearing, and with and without rabbit exclusion). Retama clearing alone did not allow the recovery of plant composition typical of gray dunes two-years after treatments, but resulted in a biodiversity loss within the Retama understorey when rabbits were present. However, Retama clearing resulted in a significant vigor improvement of T. carnosus in the site with the highest density of Retama. Rabbit exclusion significantly increased species richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index, and allowed the recovery of plant composition typical of gray dunes. The results suggest that shrub encroachment caused by Retama has a long-lasting negative impact on dune vegetation and that periodic clearing should be combined with rabbit exclusion at least during early restoration stages of dune vegetation. To recover the population of T. carnosus, Retama should be prevented from reaching high cover and periodic clearing without rabbit exclusion is suggested
