International audienceAbstractIn recent years, trace elements in cow milk have been considered good bioindicators of pollution in the agricultural environment. The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between trace element content in livestock drinking water and cow milk from dairy farms located in the southeast of Córdoba province, Argentina. Groundwater is the main source of livestock drinking water. According to the results, trace elements were grouped in three categories: (a) those that were in high concentration in phreatic water and in low concentration in deep wells (As, V); (b) those which showed the opposite trend (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn); and (c) those that were in very low concentrations in all water samples (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Se). In elements from group (a), a positive correlation between As content in water and in milk was observed. For elements included in group (b), it was observed a higher concentration in milk samples from farms that use deep wells, related with their higher concentrations in water. Cr, Ni, Pb, and Se milk contents are within the ranges reported in other areas. Soil and forage trace element content may contribute to their presence in milk. Since information about transference of trace elements from environmental matrices to milk is very scarce, at national and international levels, further studies are necessary, including speciation in milk and dairy products, to guarantee food safety

Abstract Between 1977 and 1978, Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee was the scene of two artistic events: the staging of "God save the Queen" on the Thames and the premiere of Derek Jarman's Jubilee, the first punk film. Both the line "There is no future in England's dreaming" in the song, and the horror that overwhelms Queen Elizabeth I in the film when she travels to the dystopian future of the seventies and sees the ruin her empire has become, show that in England punk was closely linked to a feeling of decadence. For his part, in 1976, Juan Carlos Kreimer, a young Argentine escaping from political violence, writes a novel-diary, De ninguna parte, in which he reconstructs marginality and the beginnings of London punk. This experience will be reflected, just two years later, in Punk. La muerte joven, a kind of manual that tried to spread the history and strategies of the punk movement in our country at the same time that it translated the desire for ruin that moved the jaded youth of the world. Taking into account the context of reception of the book, this work starts from the question about the effect that this desire for ruin and no future of punk had during the '80s and '90s to propose, from the reading of the Resistencia fanzines (1984-2001) and Homoxidal (2001-2003), a creative and politically revolutionary conception of destruction and writing. Lifetime glucocorticoid profiles in baleen of right whale calves: Potential relationships to chronic stress of repeated wounding by Kelp Gulls

    Get PDF
Baleen tissue accumulates stress hormones (glucocorticoids, GC) as it grows, along with other adrenal, gonadal and thyroid hormones. The hormones are deposited in a linear fashion such that a single plate of baleen allows retrospective assessment and evaluation of long-term trends in the whales´ physiological condition. In whale calves, a single piece of baleen contains hormones deposited across the lifespan of the animal, with the tip of the baleen representing prenatally grown baleen. This suggests that baleen recovered from stranded carcasses of whale calves could be used to examine lifetime patterns of stress physiology. Here we report lifetime profiles of cortisol and corticosterone in baleen of a North Atlantic right whale ("NARW" - Eubalaena glacialis) calf that died from a vessel strike, as well as four southern right whale ("SRW" - Eubalaena australis) calves that were found dead with varying severity of chronic wounding from Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) attacks. In all five calves, prenatally grown baleen exhibited a distinctive profile of elevated glucocorticoids that declined shortly before birth, similar to GC profiles reported from baleen of pregnant females. After birth, GC profiles in calf baleen corresponded with the degree of wounding. The NARW calf and two SRW calves with no or few gull wounds had relatively low and constant GC content throughout life, while two SRW calves with high numbers of gull wounds had pronounced elevations in baleen GC content in postnatal baleen followed by a precipitous decline shortly before death, a profile suggestive of prolonged chronic stress. Baleen samples may present a promising and valuable tool for defining the baseline physiology of whale calves and may prove useful for addressing conservation-relevant questions such as distinguishing acute from chronic stress and, potentially, determining cause of death.Fil: Ajó, Alejandro A. Modifications of Bordetella bronchiseptica core lipopolysaccharide influence immune response without affecting protective activity

Bordetella bronchiseptica produces respiratory disease primarily in mammals including humans. Although a considerably amount of research has been generated regarding lipopolysaccharide (LPS) role during infection and stimulating innate and adaptive immune response, mechanisms involved in LPS synthesis are still unknown. In this context we searched in B. bronchiseptica genome for putative glycosyltransferases. We found possible genes codifying for enzymes involved in sugar substitution of the LPS structure. We decided to analyse BB3394 to BB3400 genes, closed to a previously described LPS biosynthetic locus in B. pertussis. Particularly, conservation of BB3394 in sequenced B. bronchiseptica genomes suggests the importance of this gene for bacteria normal physiology. Deletion of BB3394 abolished resistance to naive serum as described for other LPS mutants. When purified LPS was analyzed, differences in the LPS core structure were found. Particularly, a GalNA branched sugar substitution in the core was absent in the LPS obtained from BB3394 deletion mutant. Absence of GalNA in core LPS alters immune response in vivo but is able to induce protective response against B. bronchiseptica infection.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Bordetella bronchiseptica glycosyltransferase core mutants trigger changes in lipid A structure

Bordetella bronchiseptica, known to infect animals and rarely humans, expresses a lipopolysaccharide that plays an essential role in host interactions, being critical for early clearance of the bacteria. On a B. bronchiseptica 9.73 isolate, mutants defective in the expression of genes involved in the biosynthesis of the core region were previously constructed. Herein, a comparative detailed structural analysis of the expressed lipids A by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was performed. The Bb3394 LPS defective in a 2-amino-2-deoxy-d-galacturonic acid lateral residue of the core presented a penta-acylated diglucosamine backbone modified with two glucosamine phosphates, similar to the wild-type lipid A. In contrast, BbLP39, resulting in the interruption of the LPS core oligosaccharide synthesis, presented lipid A species consisting in a diglucosamine backbone N-substituted with C14:0(3-O-C12:0) in C-2 and C14:0(3-O-C14:0) in C-2′, O-acylated with C14:0(3-O-C10:0(3-OH) in C-3′ and with a pyrophosphate in C-1. Regarding Bb3398 also presenting a rough LPS, the lipid A is formed by a hexa-acylated diglucosamine backbone carrying one pyrophosphate group in C-1 and one phosphate in C-4′, both substituted with ethanolamine groups. As far as we know, this is the first description of a phosphoethanolamine modification in B. bronchiseptica lipid A. Our results demonstrate that although gene deletions were not directed to the lipid A moiety, each mutant presented different modifications. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was an excellent tool to highlight the structural diversity of the lipid A structures biosynthesized during its transit through the periplasm to the final localization in the outer surface of the outer membrane.
