Phonon-phonon interactions due to non-linear effects in a linear ion trap

We examine in detail the theory of the intrinsic non-linearities in the dynamics of trapped ions due to the Coulomb interaction. In particular the possibility of mode-mode coupling, which can be a source of decoherence in trapped ion quantum computation, or, alternatively, can be exploited for parametric down-conversion of phonons, is discussed and conditions under which such coupling is possible are derived.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure

Spatial Decision Support Systems for Sustainable Urban Redevelopment

A recent United Nations study concludes that worldwide population will grow from approximately 7 billion today to 9.3 billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion in 2100. Nowhere is this population growth more evident than in the major cities of the world. For the first time in history, a majority of the world’s people lived in cities. In 1950, by comparison, less than 30% of the world’s population dwelled in cities. This rapid growth of population, coupled with an aging infrastructure, and the abandoning of urban manufacturing sites, creates an urgent need for inner city revitalization. There are several urban areas especially at risk. They include cities with high concentrations of derelict properties and vulnerable populations that are located within the urban core. Others include sites that are in proximity to urban industrial riverfronts. These sites are collectively known as Brownfields. Also included are sites, including Public Complexes (e.g. large publicly owned campuses such as colleges, universities, prisons, and hospital centers), with an expansive campus footprint, “where storm water runoff occurs instead of soaking into the ground” (Rutgers, 2014). As global population continues to increase in these areas, researchers are investigating new techniques that promote economic growth and sustainable development, while minimizing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of urban sprawl. One such technique is building green buildings on these Brownfield Sites. The present study investigates whether a prescriptive approach to urban development, the third party rating system, coupled with a Business Intelligence Dashboard, as a data visualization tool to display the status of redevelopment, can provide feasible and intuitive integration of data in which to prioritize redevelopment. The study presents a new framework and key sustainability indicators, based on existing third party rating systems, to prioritize redevelopment. It introduces these assessments into a Spatial Decision Support System, utilizing a dashboard as an interactive tool to gather and consolidate data and to present an evaluative means for decision-makers. The tool allows identification of the highest priority sites for long-term and short-term redevelopment of distressed properties. The aim of the research is to advance knowledge for new concepts for sustainable urban redevelopment projects using decision frameworks for selection among alternative Brownfield redevelopment projects. The study indicates that the third party rating system, coupled with dashboards, is an effective decision support tool that facilitates efficient decision-making

ABSTRACT The researchers and media have drawn attention to the gender inequality in digital divide, education and employment opportunity which pervades the various physical, social and cognitive contexts. For the time past we have witnessed an endless discrimination against and widened socio-economic inequalities in the country with disastrous effect. In developing countries like Nigeria women often end up in poorly paid jobs without social protection. In the ICT and public sector, they fill the lower rung of job hierarchy. There is need for employment conditions and job quality to improve so that women can maximize their productivity. These circumstances confronting women have led the researchers to study the Nigerian population of women and men. In the documentary study of the population of 171million the researchers applied exploratory survey of records provided by authoritative national and international organizations. Statistical tables were drawn and studied using simple percentages. Comparative studies were undertaken in the areas of school enrollment and drop out syndrome, male/female number of successful candidates in NECO and WAEC examinations in various years, public appointments on gender basis. Other parameters used to highlight gender disparity include: admission into Nigerian Universalities by sex, gender and education statistics, gender and economic statistics and admission statistics into Nigerian Universities by sex. Analysis were comparatively done using the tables containing the raw data. The results were found to be in line with the 2012 Gender in Nigeria Report which indicated gender imbalance in different areas of social and economic endeavours, having worse life opportunities, mean chances for employment, rising income differentials and general inequality. It was also identified that inequality is solely founded upon institution of patriarchy. Consequent upon the circumstances women are highly under represented in job positions and girls often face school drop out syndrome. Inequality persisted in the face of numerous programmes designed to minimize the gender disparity. The resultant effects as identified are now exclusion of women in decision making position, limitation of women’s choices and options, lack of economic empowerment and lack of access to good employment opportunities. Based on the findings and the resultant effects the following recommendations are hereby made: That policy makers in education, ICT industry and employment agencies promote equality in their organisations, inform people about the need for gender equality, care for girl dropout victims, and provide access to free functional education, minimize biases against women in employment and activate constitutional provisions against gender inequality; inclusion of study of ICT skills in tertiary institutions as well as installation of ICT facilities in various parts of Nigeria

This paper presented previous and current research efforts for medically important mosquitoes that serve as vectors of emerging and re-emerging diseases in the Philippines, in light of identifying the research gap that exists in the field of public health entomology in the country. This extensive review of the past and current research studies with regard to medical entomology and vector control also attempted to provide proper direction and insights for effective implementation of the country’s vector control programs. All research studies conducted in the Philippines from 1958 up to the present that are related to the paper’s interest and are available on Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology and RITM databases were tracked. Results from this analysis imply that studies on public health entomology in the Philippines have evolved and have gone through various stages of development over time. However, the magnitude of research on medically important mosquitoes in the country is still insufficient for it to contribute comprehensively to integrated methods of vector management and totally eliminate mosquito-borne infections in the Philippines. It is recommended for researchers to work on the continuity of vector researches and explore further the diversity of the entomological aspects of the control of vector-borne diseases

Capital market activity has an important role in developing the national economy, in order to enter the financial market, the investor needs to know about the risk in the capital market itself and determine the best stock to be taken. There are three common methods of analysis such as Sharpe ratio, Trenor ratio and Jensens alpha which are sometimes confuse the investor in order to take which one of these three is the better method. This research objective is to identify whether there is a difference of portfolio performance among these three methods on LQ 45 by analyzing the performance of each sampling stock from LQ 45. This research was using Z-score standardized to standardized these three method and after that used one-way ANOVA to find whether there is any difference among these three methods or not. Conclusion this research showed no difference between any of these three methods. Any of this method can be used by the investor to analyze the ratio of portfolio performance. As a recommendation, using these three methods simultaneously can provide better information for manager as part of investment management process.
