Research on the Brand Niche Overlap of the B2C Websites: A Case of four Online Cosmetics Stores

    Get PDF
This paper uses theories in ecology for resource competition to study the brand competition in business. It provides a quantitative method to measure brand breadth and brand overlap and examines their relationships with brand competition. Four Chinese online Cosmetics stores are used as examples to illustrate the utility of the proposed method in evaluating their degree of competition. This study can help companies identify main competitors in the industry and the main aspects that they are competing in. Key words: Brand niche; Brand niche breadth; Brand niche overlap; Online cosmetics stores bran

I3WSN: Industrial Intelligent Wireless Sensor Networks for indoor environments

Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) technologies have been successfully applied to a great variety of outdoor scenarios but, in practical terms, little effort has been applied for indoor environments, and even less in the field of industrial applications. This article presents an intelligent SWE application for an indoor and industrial scenario, with the aim of improving and increasing the levels of human safety. The base lowlevel architecture is built on top of wireless sensor networks (WSN) connected to a Sensor Observation Service (SOS). Higher layers in the architecture include services that make real time decisions based on the collected data. Both simulation and experimental results are presented. The paper shows the viability of our approach in terms of performance, scalability, modularity and safety. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry under the project FASyS (Absolutely Safe and Healthy Factory) grant number CENIT 2009-1034.Giménez Salazar, P.; Molina Moreno, B.; Calvo-Gallego, J.; Esteve Domingo, M.; Palau Salvador, CE. G2019S LRRK2 Increases Stress Susceptibility Through Inhibition of DAF-16 Nuclear Translocation in a 14-3-3 Associated-Manner in Caenorhabditis elegans

Mutations in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) are common causes of familial Parkinson’s disease (PD). Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of PD. Mutations in LRRK2 have been shown to increase susceptibility to oxidative stress. To explore mechanisms underlying susceptibility to oxidative stress in LRRK2 mutants, we generated stable Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) strains in which human LRRK2 proteins including wild type LRRK2 (WT), G2019S LRRK2 (G2019S), and G2019S-D1994A kinase-dead LRRK2 (KD) were expressed in all neurons. Human 14-3-3 β was injected into LRRK2 transgenic worms to allow co-expression of 14-3-3 β and LRRK2 proteins. We found that G2019S transgenic worms had increased sensitivity to stress (heat and juglone treatment) and impaired stress-induced nuclear translocation of DAF-16. In addition, G2019S inhibited ftt2 (a 14-3-3 gene homolog in C. elegans) knockdown-associated nuclear translocation of DAF-16. Comparably, overexpression of human 14-3-3 β could attenuate G2019S-associated toxicity in response to stress and rescued G2019S-mediated inhibition of sod-3 and dod-3 expression. Taken together, our study provides evidence suggesting that 14-3-3-associated inhibition of DAF-16 nuclear translocation could be a mechanism for G2019S LRRK2-induced oxidative stress and cellular toxicity. Our findings may give a hint that the potential of 14-3-3 proteins as neuroprotective targets in PD patients carrying LRRK2 mutations

In Vitro Uptake of 140 kDa Bacillus thuringiensis Nematicidal Crystal Proteins by the Second Stage Juvenile of Meloidogyne hapla

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are piercing/sucking pests, which cause severe damage to crops worldwide, and are difficult to control. The cyst and root-knot nematodes (RKN) are sedentary endoparasites that develop specialized multinucleate feeding structures from the plant cells called syncytia or giant cells respectively. Within these structures the nematodes produce feeding tubes, which act as molecular sieves with exclusion limits. For example, Heterodera schachtii is reportedly unable to ingest proteins larger than 28 kDa. However, it is unknown yet what is the molecular exclusion limit of the Meloidogyne hapla. Several types of Bacillus thuringiensis crystal proteins showed toxicity to M. hapla. To monitor the entry pathway of crystal proteins into M. hapla, second-stage juveniles (J2) were treated with NHS-rhodamine labeled nematicidal crystal proteins (Cry55Aa, Cry6Aa, and Cry5Ba). Confocal microscopic observation showed that these crystal proteins were initially detected in the stylet and esophageal lumen, and subsequently in the gut. Western blot analysis revealed that these crystal proteins were modified to different molecular sizes after being ingested. The uptake efficiency of the crystal proteins by the M. hapla J2 decreased with increasing of protein molecular mass, based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis. Our discovery revealed 140 kDa nematicidal crystal proteins entered M. hapla J2 via the stylet, and it has important implications in designing a transgenic resistance approach to control RKN
