Z-D Brane Box Models and Non-Chiral Dihedral Quivers
Generalising ideas of an earlier work \cite{Bo-Han}, we address the problem of constructing Brane Box Models of what we call the Z-D Type from a new point of view, so as to establish the complete correspondence between these brane setups and orbifold singularities of the non-Abelian G generated by Z_k and D_d under certain group-theoretic constraints to which we refer as the BBM conditions. Moreover, we present a new class of quiver theories of the ordinary dihedral group d_k as well as the ordinary exceptionals E_{6,7,8} which have non-chiral matter content and discuss issues related to brane setups thereof
On the tau-functions of the Degasperis-Procesi equation
The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of
determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the
Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the
two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the
DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form
of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear
equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the
-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of
the two-dimensional Toda system.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and

Testing the uniqueness of the open bosonic string field theory vacuum
The operators K_n are generators of reparameterization symmetries of Witten's cubic open string field theory. One pertinent question is whether they can be utilised to generate deformations of the tachyon vacuum and thereby violate its uniqueness. We use level truncation to show that these transformations on the vacuum are in fact pure gauge transformations to a very high accuracy, thus giving new evidence for the uniqueness of the perturbatively stable vacuum. Equivalently, this result implies the vanishing of some discrete cohomology classes of the BRST operator in the stable vacuum

Dimer models from mirror symmetry and quivering amoebae
Dimer models are 2-dimensional combinatorial systems that have been shown to encode the gauge groups, matter content and tree-level superpotential of the world-volume quiver gauge theories obtained by placing D3-branes at the tip of a singular toric Calabi-Yau cone. In particular the dimer graph is dual to the quiver graph. However, the string theoretic explanation of this was unclear. In this paper we use mirror symmetry to shed light on this: the dimer models live on a T^2 subspace of the T^3 fiber that is involved in mirror symmetry and is wrapped by D6-branes. These D6-branes are mirror to the D3-branes at the singular point, and geometrically encode the same quiver theory on their world-volume

Operando STM study of the interaction of imidazolium-based ionic liquid with graphite
Understanding interactions at the interfaces of carbon with ionic liquids (ILs) is crucially beneficial for the diagnostics and performance improvement of electrochemical devices containing carbon as active materials or conductive additives in electrodes and ILs as solvents or additives in electrolytes. The interfacial interactions of three typical imidazolium-based ILs, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (AMImTFSI) ILs having ethyl (C2), butyl (C4) and octyl (C8) chains in their cations, with highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) were studied in-situ by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM). The etching of HOPG surface and the exfoliation of graphite/graphene flakes as well as cation intercalation were observed at the HOPG/C2MImTFSI interface. The etching also takes place in C4MImTFSI at −1.5 V vs Pt but only at step edges with a much slower rate, whereas C8MIm+ cations adsorbs strongly on the HOPG surface under similar conditions with no observable etching or intercalation. The EC-STM observations can be explained by the increase in van der Waals interaction between the cations and the graphite surface with increasing length of alkyl chains
Morphological evolution of a 3D CME cloud reconstructed from three viewpoints
The propagation properties of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are crucial to
predict its geomagnetic effect. A newly developed three dimensional (3D) mask
fitting reconstruction method using coronagraph images from three viewpoints
has been described and applied to the CME ejected on August 7, 2010. The CME's
3D localisation, real shape and morphological evolution are presented. Due to
its interaction with the ambient solar wind, the morphology of this CME changed
significantly in the early phase of evolution. Two hours after its initiation,
it was expanding almost self-similarly. CME's 3D localisation is quite helpful
to link remote sensing observations to in situ measurements. The investigated
CME was propagating to Venus with its flank just touching STEREO B. Its
corresponding ICME in the interplanetary space shows a possible signature of a
magnetic cloud with a preceding shock in VEX observations, while from STEREO B
only a shock is observed. We have calculated three principle axes for the
reconstructed 3D CME cloud. The orientation of the major axis is in general
consistent with the orientation of a filament (polarity inversion line)
observed by SDO/AIA and SDO/HMI. The flux rope axis derived by the MVA analysis
from VEX indicates a radial-directed axis orientation. It might be that locally
only the leg of the flux rope passed through VEX. The height and speed profiles
from the Sun to Venus are obtained. We find that the CME speed possibly had
been adjusted to the speed of the ambient solar wind flow after leaving COR2
field of view and before arriving Venus. A southward deflection of the CME from
the source region is found from the trajectory of the CME geometric center. We
attribute it to the influence of the coronal hole where the fast solar wind
emanated from.Comment: ApJ, accepte
The Splitting of Branes on Orientifold Planes
Continuing the study in hep-th/0004092 and hep-th/0004092, we investigate a
non-trivial string dynamical process related to orientifold planes, i.e., the
splitting of physical NS-branes and D(p+2)-branes on orientifold Op-planes.
Creation or annihilation of physical Dp-branes usually accompanies the
splitting process. In the particular case p=4, we use Seiberg-Witten curves as
an independent method to check the results.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figure
Anomalous microwave response of high-temperature superconducting thin-film microstrip resonator in weak dc magnetic fields
We have studied an anomalous microwave (mw) response of superconducting
YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (YBCO) microstrip resonators in the presence of a weak
dc magnetic field, H_{dc}. The surface resistance (R_{s}) and reactance (X_{s})
show a correlated non-monotonic behaviour as a function of H_{dc}. R_{s} and
X_{s} were found to initially decrease with elevated H_{dc} and then increase
after H_{dc} reaches a crossover field, H_{c}, which is independent of the
amplitude and frequency of the input mw signal within the measurements. The
frequency dependence of R_{s} is almost linear at fixed H_{dc} with different
magnitudes (H_{c}). The impedance plane analysis
demonstrates that r_{H}, which is defined as the ratio of the change in
R_{s}(H_{dc}) and that in X_{s}(H_{dc}), is about 0.6 at H_{dc}<H_{c} and 0.1
at H_{dc}>H_{c}. The H_{dc} dependence of the surface impedance is
qualitatively independent of the orientation of H_{dc}.Comment: REVTex 3.1, 5 pages, 6 EPS figures, submitted to Physica
