    A Self-Determination Theory Perspective on Attachment, Need Satisfaction, and Well-Being in a Sample of Athletes: A Longitudinal Study

    The current study aimed to examine whether (a) mean differences and changes in athletes’ attachment style predicted psychological need satisfaction within two diverse relational contexts (coach and parent) and well-being, and (b) mean differences and changes in need satisfaction within the two relational contexts predicted well-being. One hundred and ten athletes aged between 15 and 32 years old completed a multisection questionnaire at three time points over a span of 6 months to assess the main study variables. Multilevel modeling revealed that insecure attachment styles (anxious and avoidant) predicted well-being outcomes at the within- and between-person levels. Avoidant attachment predicted need satisfaction within the parent relational context at both levels, and need satisfaction within the coach relational context at the between-person level. Need satisfaction within both relational contexts predicted various well-being outcomes at the between-person level, while need satisfaction within the parent relational context predicted vitality at the within-person level.</jats:p

    Kinematic parameters contributing to the production of spin in elite finger spin bowling

    The aim of this study was to identify the key kinematic parameters which contribute to higher spin rates in elite finger spin bowling. Kinematic data were collected for twenty-three elite male finger spin bowlers with thirty kinematic parameters calculated for each delivery. Stepwise linear regression and Pearson product moment correlations were used to identify kinematic parameters linked to spin rate. Pelvis orientation at front foot contact (r = 0.674, p < 0.001) and ball release (r = 0.676, p < 0.001) were found to be the biggest predictors of spin rate, with both individually predicting 43% of the observed variance in spin rate. Other kinematic parameters correlated with spin rate included: shoulder orientation at ball release (r = 0.462, p = 0.027), and pelvis-shoulder separation angle at front foot contact (r = 0.521, p = 0.011). The bowlers with the highest spin rates adopted a mid-way pelvis orientation angle, a larger pelvis-shoulder separation angle and a shoulder orientation short of side-on at front foot contact. The segments then rotated sequentially, starting with the pelvis and finishing with the pronation of the forearm. This knowledge can be translated to coaches to provide a better understanding of finger spin bowling technique

    Developement of real time diagnostics and feedback algorithms for JET in view of the next step

    Real time control of many plasma parameters will be an essential aspect in the development of reliable high performance operation of Next Step Tokamaks. The main prerequisites for any feedback scheme are the precise real-time determination of the quantities to be controlled, requiring top quality and highly reliable diagnostics, and the availability of robust control algorithms. A new set of real time diagnostics was recently implemented on JET to prove the feasibility of determining, with high accuracy and time resolution, the most important plasma quantities. With regard to feedback algorithms, new model&#8211;based controllers were developed to allow a more robust control of several plasma parameters. Both diagnostics and algorithms were successfully used in several experiments, ranging from H-mode plasmas to configuration with ITBs. Since elaboration of computationally heavy measurements is often required, significant attention was devoted to non-algorithmic methods like Digital or Cellular Neural/Nonlinear Networks.     Timing of Immunotherapy in Type 1 Diabetes: The Earlier, the Better?

    In 1986, The New England Journal of Medicine published George Eisenbarth’s (Eisenbarth. 1986. N. Engl. J. Med. 314: 1360–1368) model of type 1 diabetes (T1D) as a chronic autoimmune disease. In 2019, the same journal published the results of the teplizumab trial, which showed the anti-CD3 mAb delayed T1D progression in high-risk individuals. Although teplizumab is the first immunomodulatory agent to demonstrate significant delay in disease progression, it is also one of the few tested prior to clinical disease onset. Is it possible, then, that this trial’s success is as much about the agent as it is about its timing? This commentary will review the landscape of immune intervention in T1D since 1986, discuss the teplizumab trial results, and finally, speculate on whether current paradigms for T1D immune intervention should focus less on disease development as a continuum and more on the stages of T1D progression as distinct disease processes
