Projet: Jet Cross Sections in Deeply Inelastic Electron Proton Scattering (VERSION 4.1)
PROJET is a parton level Monte Carlo program for the calculation of jet cross
sections in deeply inelastic electron proton scattering. In its present version
it contains the Born level diagrams for the production of (1+1), (2+1) and
(3+1) jets and the next-to-leading order corrections for the production cross
sections of (1+1) and (2+1) jets for all polarisations of the exchanged virtual
photon. In particular, the full angular correlations between the lepton and jet
momenta are implemented. The program permits the application of acceptance cuts
on all external momenta. For this purpose, the program creates an event record
accessible to the user program with all momenta in the laboratory frame and in
the center of momentum frame of the proton and the virtual photon. This option
is indispensable for phenomenological studies because of the strong dependence
of cross sections on phase space restrictions and the large uncertainty of
fragmentation corrections in the proton direction. Since PROJET uses the Monte
Carlo integration method for the evaluation of phase space integrals, the
weights of the generated events can be used to produce distributions of

Prospects for Measuring from Jets at HERA with Polarized Protons
The measurement of the polarized gluon distribution function
from photon gluon fusion processes in electron proton deep inelastic scattering
producing two jets has been investigated. The study is based on the MEPJET
simulation program. The size of the expected spin asymmetry and corresponding
statistical uncertainties for a possible measurement with polarized beams of
electrons and protons at HERA have been estimated. The results show that the

Combined HERA Deep Inelastic Scattering Data and NLO QCD Fits
Previously published data on inclusive neutral and charged current e+p and
e-p deep inelastic scattering from HERA have been combined. The new,
model-independent method of combining the measured cross sections takes full
account of correlated systematics in a coherent way, leading to significantly
reduced uncertainties in the combined measurement across the (x, Q^2) plane.
The combined cross section data have been used as the sole input for a new
next-to-leading order QCD fit to extract the parton distribution functions
(PDFs) of the proton. The PDFs extracted have greatly reduced experimental
uncertainties, compared to separate QCD analyses on data from H1 and ZEUS.
Model uncertainties, including those arising from the parameterisation
dependence, have also been carefully considered. The resulting HERA PDFs have

Kt-Factorization vs. Renormalization Group: A small-x Consistency Argument
The consistency of the BFKL equation with the renormalization group is
investigated at next-to-leading log-x level.By use of Kt-factorization, it is
found that,besides next-to-leading small-x resummation formulae, a leading,
x-dependent redefinition of initial quarks and gluons is needed. Its

Effective Lagrangian Approach to the Theory of Eta Photoproduction in the Region
We investigate eta photoproduction in the resonance region
within the effective Lagrangian approach (ELA), wherein leading contributions
to the amplitude at the tree level are taken into account. These include the
nucleon Born terms and the leading -channel vector meson exchanges as the
non-resonant pieces. In addition, we consider five resonance contributions in
the - and - channel; besides the dominant , these are:
and . The amplitudes for the
and the photoproduction near threshold have significant
differences, even as they share common contributions, such as those of the
nucleon Born terms. Among these differences, the contribution to the
photoproduction of the -channel excitation of the is the most
significant. We find the off-shell properties of the spin-3/2 resonances to be
important in determining the background contributions. Fitting our effective
amplitude to the available data base allows us to extract the quantity
, characteristic of the
photoexcitation of the resonance and its decay into the
-nucleon channel, of interest to precise tests of hadron models. At the
photon point, we determine it to be from
the old data base, and from a
combination of old data base and new Bates data. We obtain the helicity
amplitude for to be from the old data base, and from the combination of the old data base and new Bates
data, compared with the results of the analysis of pion photoproduction

A Search for Selectrons and Squarks at HERA
Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV
are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the
minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the
lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and
hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal
is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95%
confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark
masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figure
The Spin Structure of the Nucleon
We present an overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances in our

Measurement of Leading Proton and Neutron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Deep--inelastic scattering events with a leading baryon have been detected by
the H1 experiment at HERA using a forward proton spectrometer and a forward
neutron calorimeter. Semi--inclusive cross sections have been measured in the
kinematic region 2 <= Q^2 <= 50 GeV^2, 6.10^-5 <= x <= 6.10^-3 and baryon p_T
<= MeV, for events with a final state proton with energy 580 <= E' <= 740 GeV,
or a neutron with energy E' >= 160 GeV. The measurements are used to test
production models and factorization hypotheses. A Regge model of leading baryon
production which consists of pion, pomeron and secondary reggeon exchanges
gives an acceptable description of both semi-inclusive cross sections in the
region 0.7 <= E'/E_p <= 0.9, where E_p is the proton beam energy. The leading
neutron data are used to estimate for the first time the structure function of

Multi-Jet Event Rates in Deep Inelastic Scattering and Determination of the Strong Coupling Constant
Jet event rates in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA are investigated
applying the modified JADE jet algorithm. The analysis uses data taken with the
H1 detector in 1994 and 1995. The data are corrected for detector and
hadronization effects and then compared with perturbative QCD predictions using
next-to-leading order calculations. The strong coupling constant alpha_S(M_Z^2)
is determined evaluating the jet event rates. Values of alpha_S(Q^2) are
extracted in four different bins of the negative squared momentum
transfer~\qq in the range from 40 GeV2 to 4000 GeV2. A combined fit of the
renormalization group equation to these several alpha_S(Q^2) values results in
alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.117+-0.003(stat)+0.009-0.013(syst)+0.006(jet algorithm).Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, this version to appear in Eur. Phys.
