Random Primordial Magnetic Fields and the Gas Content of Dark Matter Halos

We recently predicted the existence of random primordial magnetic fields (RPMF) in the form of randomly oriented cells with dipole-like structure with a cell size L0L_0 and an average magnetic field B0B_0. Here we investigate models for primordial magnetic field with a similar web-like structure, and other geometries, differing perhaps in L0L_0 and B0B_0. The effect of RPMF on the formation of the first galaxies is investigated. The filtering mass, MFM_F, is the halo mass below which baryon accretion is severely depressed. We show that these RPMF could influence the formation of galaxies by altering the filtering mass and the baryon gas fraction of a halo, fgf_g. The effect is particularly strong in small galaxies. We find, for example, for a comoving B_0=0.1\muG, and a reionization epoch that starts at zs=11z_s=11 and ends at ze=8z_e=8, for L0=100pcL_0=100\,\text{pc} at z=12z=12, the fgf_g becomes severely depressed for M<10^7\msun, whereas for B0=0B_0=0 the fgf_g becomes severely depressed only for much smaller masses, M<10^5\msun. We suggest that the observation of MFM_F and fgf_g at high redshifts can give information on the intensity and structure of primordial magnetic fields.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS (several improvements after suggestions of the referee

A physical approach to modelling large-scale galactic magnetic fields

A convenient representation of the structure of the large-scale galactic magnetic field is required for the interpretation of polarization data in the sub-mm and radio ranges, in both the Milky Way and external galaxies. We develop a simple and flexible approach to construct parametrised models of the large-scale magnetic field of the Milky Way and other disc galaxies, based on physically justifiable models of magnetic field structure. The resulting models are designed to be optimised against available observational data. Representations for the large-scale magnetic fields in the flared disc and spherical halo of a disc galaxy were obtained in the form of series expansions whose coefficients can be calculated from observable or theoretically known galactic properties. The functional basis for the expansions is derived as eigenfunctions of the mean-field dynamo equation or of the vectorial magnetic diffusion equation. The solutions presented are axially symmetric but the approach can be extended straightforwardly to non-axisymmetric cases. The magnetic fields are solenoidal by construction, can be helical, and are parametrised in terms of observable properties of the host object, such as the rotation curve and the shape of the gaseous disc. The magnetic field in the disc can have a prescribed number of field reversals at any specified radii. Both the disc and halo magnetic fields can separately have either dipolar or quadrupolar symmetry. The model is implemented as a publicly available software package GalMag which allows, in particular, the computation of the synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation produced by the model's magnetic field. The model can be used in interpretations of observations of magnetic fields in the Milky Way and other spiral galaxies, in particular as a prior in Bayesian analyses.

The objective of this thesis is the study of the stability of cold-formed thin-walled steel members. The interaction between global instability and local buckling of the profile walls has a reducing effect on the collapse load. The aim is to develop a numerical tool able to predict not only the collapse load, but also the equilibrium path. With this aim in view, the non-linear spatial beam tinite element recently developed by Vincent de Ville in Liege University was chosen for this purpose. The steel member is considered as an association of flat plates and corners. Local buckling is modeled by means of the concept of effective width of plates. The effective widths of the plates of the cross-section are updated at each iteration of the non-linear step according to the updated stress level of the finite element. These effective widths make up the new effective section of the finite element. In this way, the cross-section of the finite element varies continuously at each iteration, so that additional features had to be developed to take into account for the changes of the mechanical properties of the section, position of the center of gravity, orientation of the principal axes, area, flexural stiffness, etc. The arc-length method was used to solve the non-linear problem. Regarding the calculation of the effective widths, they can be calculated according to two different concepts: the former considers the plates of the section as isolated (simply supported), as it is proposed by Eurocode 3 and AISI-90; the second consists in taking into account local buckling interaction between the plates of the section by means of appropriate local buckling coefficients. Angle, channel and lipped-channel sections have been studied. Experimental results of beam-columns with the mentioned sections are compared to the numerical results found by finite elements. For channel sections only the second concept of calculation of effective widths gives a good estimation of the collapse load. In general, a good correlation between experimental and numerical results has been found for the sections studied. A graphical output has also been developed for plotting curves of load versus displacement and for the visualization in 3-D of framed structures discretised with the spatial beam finite element. This graphical post-processor has been developed with PHIGS. The members are drawn as they are with their deformations and their effective sections. Stress level can be seen by the colors surrounding the integration points

The promotion of public policy development, focusing on results, needs indicators for the monitoring of its effectiveness. The indices of municipal development, synthetic indices that capture certain aspects of local development, serve as reference for the diagnosis and monitoring of the results of the action of public management, such as important tools for planning. The ID-MPE - Municipal Development Index of Micro and Small Enterprise has as propose to guide the strategies and local policies of economic promotion, aiming to capture the favorable conditions for the establishment and growth of small local businesses. Applying the methodology of the ID-MPE Paraná shows the municipalities with the best business environments for the flourishing of MPE's, and serves as a benchmark for the promotion of local development policies based on the General Law of Micro and Small Enterprise.planning of local development; municipal development index; multivariate statistical analysis

A good story is capable of catching our attention, gain space in our memory and move us to act. It’s been a while since the great brands realized that. However, the urgency of understanding and applying the storytelling in organizations is a relatively recent phenomenon. With a greater number of media and the attention of the target more fragmented, the storytelling theory arises powerfully to built meaning in organizations and consequently in the great ones. Using the case study of the story of Apple Computers, this dissertation will develop a parallel between storytelling and the success of an organization. And, also, will contribute to understand how the narrative of the company collaborated to the construction of the most valuable brand of the world, with 7% of market share
