    Technology and older women : considerations regarding their use and misuse

    Health and wellbeing are inextricably linked to an individual's capacity for continued meaningful engagement and connection with the world around them. Technological innovations designed to maximize the quality of life for older women range from sophisticated bio-medical interventions to ordinary day-to-day communication devices. Many innovations can ensure a higher quality of life for older women and support and care as required. In this article, we consider: (1) The range of appropriate technologies currently available for older women, their families and communities. (2) The way technology contributes to the maintenance of optimum physical health and wellbeing for older women.     Ageing well in three culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities

    Ageing in a multicultural Australia has been identified by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation (The Foundation) as a key priority area going forward. The Ageing Well in Three Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities research project was an exploratory two-stage project which sought to discover how best to support ageing well in Chinese, Italian and Greek communities in Victoria. The exploratory research aimed to assist the Foundation in seeking direction on the role of philanthropy in supporting ageing well in each of the participating communities. The learnings from this research will enhance the prospects of ageing well in a culturally diverse Australia, and provide understanding on the role of philanthropy in making a positive contribution towards it

    Prey Behavior, Age-Dependent Vulnerability, and Predation Rates

    Variation in the temporal pattern of vulnerability can provide important insights into predator-prey relationships and the evolution of antipredator behavior. We illustrate these points with a system that has coyotes (Canis latrans) as a predator and two species of congeneric deer (Odocoileus spp.) as prey. The deer employ different antipredator tactics (aggressive defense vs. flight) that result in contrasting patterns of age-dependent vulnerability in their probability of being captured when encountered by coyotes.We use longterm survival data and a simple mathematical model to show that (1) species differences in age-dependent vulnerability are reflected in seasonal predation rates and (2) seasonal variation in prey vulnerability and predator hunt activity, which can be associated with the availability of alternative prey, interact to shape seasonal and annual predation rates for each prey species. Shifting hunt activity from summer to winter, or vice versa, alleviated annual mortality on one species and focused it on the other. Our results indicate that seasonal variation in prey vulnerability and hunt activity interact to influence the impact that a predator has on any particular type of prey. Furthermore, these results indicate that seasonal variation in predation pressure is an important selection pressure shaping prey defenses

    Librarians and teaching faculty often have different perceptions of the roles of the library and the librarian in undergraduate education. A study surveying six community colleges reveals that there is much room for improvement in the interrelationship between librarians and teaching faculty. More effective communication and mutual respect would enhance the educational experience for students and provide a richer learning environment

    ACE/SWICS Observations of Heavy Ion Dropouts within the Solar Wind

    We present the first in situ observations of heavy ion dropouts within the slow solar wind, observed for select elements ranging from helium to iron. For iron, these dropouts manifest themselves as depletions of the Fe/H ratio by factors up to ~25. The events often exhibit mass-dependent fractionation and are contained in slow, unsteady wind found within a few days from known stream interfaces. We propose that such dropouts are evidence of gravitational settling within large coronal loops, which later undergo interchange reconnection and become source regions of slow, unsteady wind. Previously, spectroscopic studies by Raymond et al. in 1997 (and later Feldman et al. in 1999) have yielded strong evidence for gravitational settling within these loops. However, their expected in situ signature plasma with heavy elements fractionated by mass was not observed prior to this study. Using data from the SWICS instrument on board the Advanced Composition Explorer ( ACE ), we investigate the composition of the solar wind within these dropouts and explore long term trends over most of a solar cycle.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98580/1/0004-637X_760_1_30.pd

    Efficacy of personalized cognitive counseling in men of color who have sex with men: secondary data analysis from a controlled intervention trial.

    In a previous report, we demonstrated the efficacy of a cognitively based counseling intervention compared to standard counseling at reducing episodes of unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking HIV testing. Given the limited number of efficacious prevention interventions for MSM of color (MOC) available, we analyzed the data stratified into MOC and whites. The sample included 196 white MSM and 109 MOC (23 African Americans, 36 Latinos, 22 Asians, eight Alaskan Natives/Native Americans/Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 20 of mixed or other unspecified race). Among MOC in the intervention group, the mean number of episodes of UAI declined from 5.1 to 1.6 at six months and was stable at 12 months (1.8). Among the MOC receiving standard counseling, the mean number of UAI episodes was 4.2 at baseline, 3.9 at six months and 2.1 at 12 months. There was a significant treatment effect overall (relative risk 0.59, 95% confidence interval 0.35-0.998). These results suggest that the intervention is effective in MOC
